Book Development of a Partially Premixed Combustion Model for a Diesel Engine Using Multiple Injection Strategies

Download or read book Development of a Partially Premixed Combustion Model for a Diesel Engine Using Multiple Injection Strategies written by Rene Thygesen and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to fulfil future emissions legislations, new combustion systems are to be investigated. One way of improving exhaust emissions is the application of multiple injection strategies and conventional or partially premixed combustion conditions to a Diesel engine. The application of numerical techniques as CFD supports and improves the quality of engine developments. Unfortunately, current spray and combustion models are not accurate enough to simulate multiple injection systems, being in this way a topic of research. The goal of this study was the development of a novel simulation method for the investigation of Diesel engines operated with multiple injection strategies and different combustion modes. The first part of this work focused in improving the spray modelling. The inform ation of 3D CFD simulations of the injector nozzle was introduced in the spray simulation as boundary conditions developing coupling subroutines for this issue. The atomisation modelling was also improved using validated presumed droplet size distributions. Moreover, to avoid the simulation of the injector nozzle for every investigated operating point, a novel interpolating tool was developed in order to create spray boundary conditions based on few 3D CFD simulations of the nozzle under certain initial and boundary conditions. The second part of this thesis dealt with the combustion modelling of Diesel engines. For this issue, a laminar flamelet approach called Representative Interactive Flamelet model (RIF) was selected and implemented. Afterwards, an extended combustion model based on RIF was developed in order to take into account multiple injection strategies. Finally, this new model was validated with a wide range of operating points: applying multiple injection strategies under conventional and partially premixed combustion conditions.

Book Time for a Model Change

Download or read book Time for a Model Change written by Graeme P. Maxton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automotive industry ranks among the most significant business phenomena of the 20th century and remains vitally important today, accounting for almost 11% of the GDP of North America, Europe and Japan and one in nine jobs. In economic and social terms alike, its products have had a fundamental impact on modern society - for better and worse. Yet the industry has found it hard to adjust to recent challenges and is no longer much valued by the capital markets. It is riven with internal contradictions that inhibit reform, and faces a stark choice between years of strife or radical change. This book is a wake-up call for those who work in the automotive business. It highlights the challenges and opportunities that exist for managers, legislators, financial institutions and potential industry entrants. Most of all, it gives us all cause to reflect on the value of our mobility, today and tomorrow.

This publication is valuable to students; working through and coping with the practice questions will help them face advanced mathematical examinations with confidence.

Book Comparison of Vibration Test Results for a Model and Prototype Arch Dam

Download or read book Comparison of Vibration Test Results for a Model and Prototype Arch Dam written by Roger D. Crowson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration tests were conducted on both the prototype and a 1:24-scale model of the North Fork Dam, a double curvature arch dam, to determine natural frequencies, mode shapes, damping ratios, and hydrodynamic pressures. Two vibrators mounted on the crest of the dam were used as input excitation sources for both series of tests. Electromagnetic shakers capable of a 40-lb output were used in the model tests, while counterrotating, eccentric mass exciters capable of a 5000-lb output were employed for the prototype. Velocities were measured along the crest and downstream face of the model, whereas accelerations were measured in the same locations on the prototype. Measurements in both curves were taken at the dam-reservoir interface while the structures were excited at resonant frequencies. Damping in both model and prototype ranged from approximately 2 to 5 percent of critical. These values are consistent with structural damping values for these types of structures.

Book Investigation of the Variation of Maximum Lift for a Pitching Airplane Model and Comparison with Flight Results

Download or read book Investigation of the Variation of Maximum Lift for a Pitching Airplane Model and Comparison with Flight Results written by Paul W. Harper and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apparatus was developed which utilized a pitching airplane model to determine maximum wing loads as a function of the rate of change of angle of attack. In order to evaluate the pitching-model technique, the maximum lift coefficient was determined as a function of the rate of change of angle of attack over a Mach number range from approximately 0.2 to 0.6 in wind-tunnel tests of a 1/20-scale model of a conventional single-engine fighter airplane and was conpared with existing flight data of this airplane. The wind-tunnel and flight results were found to be in good agreement.

Book Boundary Layer Parameterization for a Global Spectral Model

Download or read book Boundary Layer Parameterization for a Global Spectral Model written by Larry Mahrt and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the work has concentrated on interactions between the soil model and the model of the atmospheric boundary layer and the behavior of the boundary-layer package within the Air Force Global Spectral Model. Such studies have underscored the importance of the formulation of surface properties and transport within the underlying soil. Work during the contract period also focussed on elimination of several inadequacies of boundary-layer modelling. The inclusion of the statistical impact of subgrid variations of surface properties leads to a surface exchange coefficient which varies more smoothly with stability and does not decrease as rapidly with very stable conditions. Such modifications reduce the nocturnal cooling which is usually overestimated in boundary-layer models. Other improvements of the boundary-layer model in stable conditions have resulted from increasing the critical Richardson number in the boundary-layer depth formulation and adopting the Kondo formulation for the eddy diffusivity. The development of a formulation for boundary-layer cumulus has allowed inclusion of cloud-induced drying. Although this formulation leads to significant improvement of the boundary-layer predictions in cloudy situations, the general problem is far from solved. Keywords: Atmospheric boundary layer; Surface energy balance; Soil model; Stable layer parameterization; Surface fluxes. (jhd).
