Book The Certainty of Uncertainty

Download or read book The Certainty of Uncertainty written by Mark A. Schaefer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is full of people who are very certain--in politics, in religion, in all manner of things. In addition, political, religious, and social organizations are marketing certainty as a cure all to all life's problems. But is such certainty possible? Or even good? The Certainty of Uncertainty explores the question of certainty by looking at the reasons human beings crave certainty and the religious responses we frequently fashion to help meet that need. The book takes an in-depth view of religion, language, our senses, our science, and our world to explore the inescapable uncertainties they reveal. We find that the certainty we crave does not exist. As we reflect on the unavoidable uncertainties in our world, we come to understand that letting go of certainty is not only necessary, it's beneficial. For, in embracing doubt and uncertainty, we find a more meaningful and courageous religious faith, a deeper encounter with mystery, and a way to build strong relationships across religious and philosophical lines. In The Certainty of Uncertainty, we see that embracing our belief systems with humility and uncertainty can be transformative for ourselves and for our world.

Book Bind Up the Testimony

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Isaac Block
  • Publisher : Hendrickson Publishers
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 1619705990
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Bind Up the Testimony written by Daniel Isaac Block and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major flashpoints in academic biblical studies in the past 125 years has centered on the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah. Beginning in the late 1800s, some scholars suggested that this book may have been written by multiple people over a period of centuries, a view that contrasts with the traditional one that the entire book of Isaiah was written in the eighth century BC by the Judean prophet Isaiah ben Amoz. Because for many conservative scholars the latter position is the only one that respects the divine inspiration of the text, and because they also believe that this position is endorsed by Jesus in the New Testament, the differing conclusions of mainstream and conservative scholars regarding the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah have long served to divide these groups. Bind Up the Testimony--a collection of essays from a colloquium held at Wheaton College in 2013--brings together a variety of evangelical responses to this issue. Although a few of the essays arrive at conservative conclusions regarding the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah, most of them attempt to chart new, more nuanced directions for thinking on this subject, and suggest that careful attention to the (complicated) compositional history of the book of Isaiah need not be a hindrance--and can, in fact, be a help--to Christians who understand the book of Isaiah as divinely inspired Scripture that has spoken to God's people throughout the ages and that continues to speak to them today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hate isn't a thing from history. The Jewish people and Israel have been described as "a dominant and moving force behind the present and coming evils of our day"; "a monstrous system of evil...[that] will destroy us and our children" if not resisted; and a group that seeks "the annihilation of almost every Gentile man, woman, and child and the establishment of a satanic Jewish-led global dictatorship." What's worse is that these comments were all made by professing Christians. In Christian Antisemitism, respected Messianic Bible scholar Michael L. Brown, PhD, documents shocking examples of modern "Christian" antisemitism and exposes the lies that support them. Carefully researched, this book shows that church-based antisemitism is no longer a thing of the past. Rather, a dangerous, shocking tide of "Christian" antisemitism has begun to rise. In Christian Antisemitism, Dr. Brown shows you how to stem this tide now and overcome the evil of "Christian" antisemitism with the powerful love of the cross! This book will show you how to confront everyday antisemitism in all areas of your life and become a champion for the people of Israel.
