Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Children's Hour In nearly every case it has been found necessary to adapt the stories to the immediate use of the story teller, whether kindergartner or mother. They have been shortened, and only such salient facts retained as will result in clear mental concepts, and make the stories easily told without undue taxing of the child's attention. A large place has been given to the fanciful tale, which has a direct educational value in the training of the imagination; and the accumulative repetition story, which develops the child's sense of humor, and appeals to his instinctive love of rhyme and jingle. Book excerpt: Children's Hour. Children's Book. The greater part of this book is made up of stories from the poems of Homer and Virgil. Homer is thought to have lived in Greece about three thousand years ago, and yet his poems never seem old-fashioned and people do not tire of reading them. Boys and girls almost always like them, because they are so full of stories. If you want to read about giants or mermaids or shipwrecks or athletic contests or enchanters or furious battles or the capture of cities or voyages to strange countries, all you have to do is to open the Iliad and the Odyssey, and you will find stories on all of these subjects. Homer can describe a foot-race or the throwing of a discus so that you hold your breath to see who will win; and he can picture a battle so vividly that you almost try to dodge the arrows and spears. He can make the tears come into your eyes by telling you of the grief of the warrior's wife when he leaves her and their baby son to go to battle; and he can almost make you shout....... An early book of 19th century, yet tops our present literature books

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Hour: A Magazine for the Little Ones, May, 1874 N o wonder Rosy looked 'at the empty cup with tears in her eyes, for coffee, was something she didn't have every day, i and her mother had sweetened this so nicely, and put such nice yellow cream in it, and there wasn't any more, she was' sure; and, oh dear! She couldn't help sob bing outright, thinking what a treat she'd missed. Mrs. Ray pitied Jber distress, though of course it was a trial to have her tablecloth stained, and she would have felt like scolding if it hadn't been an accident. The last drop had been drained out of the coffee-pot, or she would have given her little girl another cup. All she could do was to promise Rosy one the' next morning, and like a wise, thoughtful mother try and divert her. 5 For Mrs. Ray knew these little griefs are as keenly felt by children as graver enes by their elders. 'do you know* where coffee comes from, Rosy dear? Said she, softly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
