Book Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State Classic Reprint written by Edward Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State It might, perhaps, be true in one sense to say, that the State united itself with the Church in this country: and it is important to remember, that the Church of England existed for centuries before there was any State, to which it could unite itself. A Church or body of Christians existed in this country, and was governed by Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, not only for many centuries before Unitarians, or Quakers, or Infidels were allowed to sit in Parliament, but for many centuries before Parliament itself was thought of. There is great reason to think, that Christianity was introduced into this island in the first century and there is positive evidence, that it had spread very widely in the second century, while the government was still Pagan. In the fourth century we read of Bishops from British churches attending Councils in different parts of Europe: and no fact in history is more demonstrable, than that the Episcopal form of Church Government prevailed at that time in Britain, as it did in the whole of Christendom. If we ask why our British ancestors preferred an Episcopal Church, we shall be drawn into the con troversy concerning Episcopacy, for which I have no fancy at present: and it is sufficient to observe, that the Christian inhabitants of the island settled the matter for themselves all Christians were then Episcopalians: there were no Presbyterians, no Independents, no Quakers, no Baptists, no Unita rians: there were, in fact, no Dissenters: all be longed to the Church of England and the frame work and constitution of that Church were precisely the same then as they are at present, with this difference in part of its arrangements, that the Epis copal sees were not established by any act of the civil power, nor was the nomination of Bishops in the hands of the Government. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the New Day to the Old Church While it would be unfortunate for the Church were it to fail at this critical period in its history, it would be equally disastrous for those who are impatient for progress were they to leave the Church at this stage. There is no doubt that those who would accomplish the biggest things in behalf of the people can best do them through the Church, even though they may just now be forced to fight an array of conservatism which at times seems appalling. The same reactionaries are to be found in other organizations and institutions. The democratic form of gov ernment within the Church makes it easier to fight them here than anywhere else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of God: A Social History Like all histories, however, this is also a unique story. The twists and turns in the history of the Church of God smack of the isolation of Cleveland, Tennessee, and of the leadings of a.i Tomlinson and other homespun prophets. Crews writes of earn est men struggling to hammer out a code of morality in a region where tobacco-raising was ethically more problematic than slum housing and where the kkk was far better known than the afl. In the end, this is the story of a church that contributed to the birth of worldwide Pentecostalism but that has spent most of its history in its own world confronting its own problems. Crews knows the Church of God well - both experientially and as a scholar. He has read the writings of the prophets; he has talked and sung with the true believers. All denominational his tory is controversial; no telling of it is likely to satisfy everyone. But Crews has written with fairness and restraint about a move ment that could hardly have expected such respect twenty years ago. That is as it should be. Pentecostals have earned a place in history, and it is fitting that their stories be told respectfully. Having won such regard, it is fitting that Pentecostals listen to an objective accounting of their past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: We need not be surprised, then, that in the Middle Ages also there were rulers who aspired to supreme political and temporal power. The truly exceptional thing is that in medieval times there were always at least two claimants to the role, each commanding a formidable apparatus of government, and that for century after century neither was able to dominate the other completely, so that the duality persisted, was eventually rationalized in works of political theory and ultimately built into the structure of European society. This situation profoundly influenced the development of Western constitutionalism.
