Download or read book Skeptical Theism written by Perry Hendricks and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is evil evidence against the existence of God? Does divine hiddenness provide an evidential problem for theism? Is our evolutionary history evidence that God doesn’t exist? Skeptical theism is the view that humans are cognitively limited in important ways that prevent us from providing affirmative answers to these evidential questions. In this book—the first monograph published on skeptical theism—Perry Hendricks gives careful, novel, and compelling arguments in favor of skeptical theism and provides a comprehensive defense of it, addressing all major objections to skeptical theism on offer. The implications of skeptical theism are teased out: it undermines the most prominent arguments for atheism on offer, which significantly lowers the epistemic status of atheism.

Download or read book Letters from an Unknown Woman written by Gerard Woodward and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her children evacuated and her husband at the front, Tory Pace is grudgingly sharing the family home with her irascible mother; working at the local gelatin factory—to help the war effort—and generally doing just about as well as could be expected in difficult times. Her quiet life is thrown into turmoil, however, when her prisoner-of-war husband, Donald, makes an outrageous demand for sexual gratification. He wants a dirty letter! Horrified, at first, that Donald is being turned into some sort of monster by the Nazis, Tory’s disgust gradually gives way to a sense of marital duty, and taking in the libraries, bookshops, public conveniences and barbers’ shops of South-East London, she begins a quest to master the language of carnal desire: a quest that takes a sudden and unexpected turn into far more dangerous territory. Beginning with an act of unintentional cannibalism, and flirting with a scheme to end world hunger by the use of protein pills, Letters from an Unknown Woman ranges widely across the Continent and yet always returns home: to family, to people, to relationships. Woodward offers a prescient examination of the ways in which we both nurture and consume each other in the face of adversity.
Download or read book The English Poems of an Unknown German Poet written by Marcellus M. Menke and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to write poetry in a language other than one's mother tongue? The English Poems of an Unknown German Poet are the attempt. Written in the years 2015 to 2022, after phases of intensive reading and working with English texts, they lie in the tension between the foreign and the familiar, one's own world entering a foreign one and a foreign world touching familiar spheres. Mutual interaction between understanding and incomprehension, as an exercise to focus on real truthfulness. And of course in these poems always a companion: a smile. Present in its whole range from a soft warm smile only as a guess on one's lips to a sometimes even bitterly sarcastic ironic grin, may be the only answer in a confusingly unusual time.

Download or read book Problem Solving for Process Operators and Specialists written by Joseph M. Bonem and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides methods to train process operators to solve challenging problems. The book is split into two parts. The first part consists of two parts; first developing a daily monitoring system and second providing a structured 5 step problem solving approach that combines cause and effect problem solving thinking with the formulation of theoretically correct hypotheses. The 5 step approach emphasizes the classical problem solving approach (defining the sequence of events) with the addition of the steps of formulating a theoretically correct working hypothesis, providing a means to test the hypothesis, and providing a foolproof means to eliminate the problem. The initial part of the book focuses on defining the problem that must be solved and obtaining the location, time and quantity based specifications of the problem. This part of the book also presents techniques to find and define problems at an early point before they progress to the critical level. The second part of the book deals with the utilization of fundamental chemical engineering skills to develop a technically correct working hypothesis that is the key to successful problem solving. The primary emphasis is on simple pragmatic calculation techniques that are theoretically correct. It is believed that any operator can perform these calculations if he is provided the correct prototype. Throughout the book, the theory behind each pragmatic calculation technique is explained in understandable terms prior to presenting the author's approach. These techniques have been developed by the author in 50+ years of industrial experience. The book includes many sample problems and examples of real world problem solving. Using these techniques, theoretically correct working hypotheses can be developed in an expedient fashion.

Download or read book Revisiting Aquinas Proofs for the Existence of God written by Robert Arp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited and introduced by Robert Arp, Revisiting Aquinas’ Proofs for the Existence of God is a collection of new papers written by scholars focusing on the famous Five Proofs or Ways (Quinque Viae) for the existence of God put forward by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) near the beginning of his unfinished tome, Summa Theologica. It is not an exaggeration to say that not only is Aquinas’ Summa a landmark text in the history of Western philosophy and Christianity, but also that the Five Proofs discussed therein—namely, the arguments that conclude to the Unmoved Mover, Uncaused Cause, Necessary Being, Superlative Being, and Intelligent Director—are as compelling today as they were in the 13th Century. Written in a debate format with different scholars arguing for and against each Proof, the papers in the book consist of arguments utilizing various combinations of contemporary science and philosophical ideas to bolster the positions. The result is a revisiting of Aquinas’ Proofs that is relevant, stimulating, enlightening, and refreshing.
Download or read book For Reasons Unknown written by David Phillips and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Americans knew the real reason Senator Joseph Bibby, Jr. voted for a change in the National Energy Policy, or what crimes oil tycoon Neil Rodkin was willing to commit to "save" the country from Middle Eastern oil companies, the current world situation - war, high gas prices, and terrorism - would all make sense. The kidnapping of Desi Adams, Senator Bibby's secret sex toy, by a wealthy oil tycoon leads to an action packed hunt through the streets of D.C. and the suburbs of Virginia by Desi's boyfriend, police officer Nate Ramano. At the same time, Middle Eastern oil cartels and environmental terrorists are tying to manipulate other key politicians into continuing the moratorium on oil exploration in Alaska's Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). These competing interests cause chaos in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and political turmoil inside the beltway.
