Book Secrets of Power Volume I

Download or read book Secrets of Power Volume I written by Ingo Swann and published by Swann-Ryder Productions, LLC. This book was released on 2018-09-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books about power only deal with the societal formula of the few having power over the enormously larger powerless masses, and which is mistaken as the so-called "natural order of power." But it is not well understood that this formula also requires social conditioning measures aimed at perpetuating the continuing depowerment of the powerless so that the powerful CAN have power over them. This in turn requires the societal suppression and secretizing of all knowledge about the superlative human powers known to exist in individuals of the human species, but which are socially forced into latency in most. It is broadly understood that power and secrecy go together, but the scope of the "web" of secrets surrounding the larger nature of human power(s) is surprising. As discussed in this Volume I of SECRETS OF POWER, empowerment is difficult if the larger panorama of societal power and depowerment are not more full understood.

Book excerpt: This work, bearing a dedication to God as the ultimate symbol-user, explores Kenneth Burke's rhetorical thought, particularly as it concerns entelechy. He also uses Burkean entelechial methods to critique the sociopolitical tragedy that occurred at the Branch-Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Culinary Nationalism in Asia

Download or read book Culinary Nationalism in Asia written by Michelle T. King and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With culinary nationalism defined as a process in flux, as opposed to the limited concept of national cuisine, the contributors of this book call for explicit critical comparisons of cases of culinary nationalism among Asian regions, with the intention of recognizing patterns of modern culinary development. As a result, the formation of modern cuisine is revealed to be a process that takes place around the world, in different forms and periods, and not exclusive to current Eurocentric models. Key themes include the historical legacies of imperialism/colonialism, nationalism, the Cold War, and global capitalism in Asian cuisines; internal culinary boundaries between genders, ethnicities, social classes, religious groups, and perceived traditions/modernities; and global contexts of Asian cuisines as both nationalist and internationalist enterprises, and "Asia" itself as a vibrant culinary imaginary. The book, which includes a foreword from Krishnendu Ray and an afterword from James L. Watson, sets out a fresh agenda for thinking about future food studies scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings the field of tourism into dialogue with what is captured under the varied notions of the Anthropocene. Furthermore, through the lens of the Anthropocene this book also spurs thinking of the role of tourism in relation to sustainable development, planetary boundaries, ethics (and what is framed as geo-ethics) and refocused tourism theory to make sense of tourism’s earthly entanglements and thinking tourism beyond Nature-Society. The multidisciplinary nature of the material will appeal to a broad academic audience, such as those working in tourism, geography, anthropology and sociology.

Book A Revolution in Tropes

Download or read book A Revolution in Tropes written by Jane S. Sutton and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Revolution in Tropes is a groundbreaking study of rhetoric and tropes. Theorizing new ways of seeing rhetoric and its relationship with democratic deliberation, Jane Sutton and Mari Lee Mifsud explore and display alloiōsis as a trope of difference, exception, and radical otherness. Their argument centers on Aristotle’s theory of rhetoric through particular tropes of similarity that sustained a vision of civic discourse but at the same time underutilized tropes of difference. When this vision is revolutionized, democratic deliberation can perform and advance its ends of equality, justice, and freedom. Marie-Odile N. Hobeika and Michele Kennerly join Sutton and Mifsud in pushing the limits of rhetoric by engaging rhetoric alloiostrophically. Their collective efforts work to display the possibilities of what rhetoric can be. A Revolution in Tropes will appeal to scholars of rhetoric, philosophy, and communication

Book Emotional Insight

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael S. Brady
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-11-28
  • ISBN : 019150873X
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Emotional Insight written by Michael S. Brady and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael S. Brady presents a fresh perspective on how to understand the difference that emotions can make to our lives. It is a commonplace that emotions can give us information about the world: we are told, for instance, that sometimes it is a good idea to 'listen to our heart' when trying to figure out what to believe. In particular, many people think that emotions can give us information about value: fear can inform us about danger, guilt about moral wrongs, pride about achievement. But how are we to understand the positive contribution that emotions can make to our beliefs in general, and to our beliefs about value in particular? And what are the conditions in which emotions make such a contribution? Emotional Insight aims to answer these questions. In doing so it illuminates a central tenet of common-sense thinking, contributes to an on-going debate in the philosophy of emotion, and illustrates something important about the nature of emotion itself. For a central claim of the book is that we should reject the idea that emotional experiences give us information in the same way that perceptual experiences do. The book rejects, in other words, the Perceptual Model of emotion. Instead, the epistemological story that the book tells will be grounded in a novel and distinctive account of what emotions are and what emotions do. On this account, emotions help to serve our epistemic needs by capturing our attention, and by facilitating a reassessment or reappraisal of the evaluative information that emotions themselves provide. As a result, emotions can promote understanding of and insight into ourselves and our evaluative landscape.

Book Shakespeare s Non Standard English

Download or read book Shakespeare s Non Standard English written by Norman Blake and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-08-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholarly attention on Shakespeare's vocabulary has been directed towards his enrichment of the language through borrowing words from other languages and has thus concentrated on the more learned aspects of his vocabulary. However, the bulk of Shakespeare's output consists of plays and to make these appear lifelike he needed to employ a colloquial and informal style. This aspect of his work has been largely disregarded apart from his bawdy language. This dictionary includes all types of non-standard and informal language and lists all examples found in Shakespeare's works. These include dialect forms, colloquial forms, non-standard and variant forms, fashionable words and puns. >

Book The Translator s Turn

Download or read book The Translator s Turn written by Douglas Robinson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite landmark works in translation studies such as George Steiner's After Babel and Eugene Nida's The Theory and Practice of Translation, most of what passes as con-temporary "theory" on the subject has been content to remain largely within the realm of the anecdotal. Not so Douglas Robinson's ambitious book, which, despite its author's protests to the contrary, makes a bid to displace (the deconstructive term is apposite here) a gamut of earlier cogitations on the subject, reaching all the way back to Cicero, Augustine, and Jerome. Robinson himself sums up the aim of his project in this way: "I want to displace the entire rhetoric and ideology of mainstream translation theory, which ... is medieval and ecclesiastical in origin, authoritarian in intent, and denaturing and mystificatory in effect." -- from http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 12, 2014).
