Book Christianity and Religious Plurality

Download or read book Christianity and Religious Plurality written by Wilbert R. Shenk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries the Christian faith has spread to all continents. Although more global than ever, Christians are religious minorities in most societies. Religious freedom is hardly universal. In the past fifty years, millions of people have been uprooted from their traditional homelands in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Some have emigrated to Western Europe and North America. The West has become the scene of cultural, linguistic, and religious variety on a scale unimagined in 1900. Today, the full range of faiths and religious practices from all continents are present in Europe and North America. Christians are challenged to come to terms with this changed situation. These developments have intensified religious plurality. Christians all over the world are being urged to understand and engage with this new situation. This volume highlights this new reality and specifies some sources for engagement, not least among them the Judeo-Christian scriptures--fundamental to all "Christianities"--that emerged out of religious plural contexts. On the basis of their faith in the Triune God disclosed in this text, all followers of Jesus Christ must interact with these opportunities in today's radically context-sensitive world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative analysis of how Christianity helped legitimize the death penalty in early modern Europe, then throughout the Christian world, by turning execution into a great cathartic public ritual and the condemned into a Christ-like figure who accepts death to save humanity. The public execution of criminals has been a common practice ever since ancient times. In this wide-ranging investigation of the death penalty in Europe from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, noted Italian historian Adriano Prosperi identifies a crucial period when legal concepts of vengeance and justice merged with Christian beliefs in repentance and forgiveness. Crime and Forgiveness begins with late antiquity but comes into sharp focus in fourteenth-century Italy, with the work of the Confraternities of Mercy, which offered Christian comfort to the condemned and were for centuries responsible for burying the dead. Under the brotherhoods’ influence, the ritual of public execution became Christianized, and the doomed person became a symbol of the fallen human condition. Because the time of death was known, this “ideal” sinner could be comforted and prepared for the next life through confession and repentance. In return, the community bearing witness to the execution offered forgiveness and a Christian burial. No longer facing eternal condemnation, the criminal in turn publicly forgave the executioner, and the death provided a moral lesson to the community. Over time, as the practice of Christian comfort spread across Europe, it offered political authorities an opportunity to legitimize the death penalty and encode into law the right to kill and exact vengeance. But the contradictions created by Christianity’s central role in executions did not dissipate, and squaring the emotions and values surrounding state-sanctioned executions was not simple, then or now.

Download or read book Gelato written by Adriano di Petrillo and published by Ryland Peters & Small. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gelato is not simply the Italian word for ice cream. 'A good gelato should be rich in flavour but you shouldn't feel full even after you've eaten a pint of it. Trust me!' So says Adriano di Petrillo, owner of Dri Dri, the fashionable London-based gelateria. Authentic Italian gelato is made with milk rather than cream, so it's much lighter and significantly lower in fat. Gelato is made by a process called 'mantecazione', where it is frozen and churned very slowly so it doesn't absorb too much air. This achieves a creamy texture without the fat. Gelato is surprisingly easy to make at home with a domestic ice cream maker. Try Adriano's simple recipes for Vanilla, Coffee, Bitter Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, and TiramisA'. Also included are recipes for fresh and fruity sorbets and granitas, including Green Apple and Mixed Berries. Suggestions for delicious ways to serve your creations include Bitter Chocolate Gelato with Cherry Compote; Lemon Gelato with Brioche; and Almond Gelato drowned with hot espresso. Ideas for gelato-based drinks include Italian classics such as a Rossini (strawberry sorbet with Prosecco) and Sgroppino (lemon gelato blended with vodka or Prosecco). Adriano di Petrillo was born in Parma, Italy, and before launching Dri Dri in July 2010, he lived in New York and managed Art Partner, a leading talent agency for fashion photography and styling. He could never find a good gelato outside of Italy, so he opened his two London Dri Dri stores in the fashionable districts of Portobello Road and Chelsea.

Book Grown Ups are Really Stupid

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to heal the psychological wounds of an abused child? How can we restore security to a neglected child? How can we help a child and his parents create an emotional bond? How can an adopted child reconcile his or her successive lives? Confronted with parents who are unaffectionate, depressive, absent or excluded, a child can become withdrawn, panic-stricken by fear of abandonment, violent or unable to express him/herself in words or actions. In France, over 300,000 children are under protective care. Dr. Daniel Rousseau, who has worked in a nursery run by the French child welfare agency (Aide sociale à l’enfance), uses case studies to explain how these abused children invent solutions to survive and grow up, sometimes even without their parents. A child psychiatrist for 25 years, Dr Daniel Rousseau has been working at the Maine-et-Loire children’s home for 20 years. He has received three awards from the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale, the Fondation de France and the Observatoire National de l’Enfance en Danger for his research on children in the Aide Sociale à l’Enfance system.
