Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Sexuality Health and Rights written by Peter Aggleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-30 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have witnessed an explosion of research on sexuality as the social sciences have worked to find new ways of understanding a rapidly changing world. Growing concern for issues such as population, women's and men's reproductive health, and the HIV and AIDS pandemic, has since provided new legitimacy for work on sexuality, health and rights. A detailed and up-to-date reference work, The Handbook of Sexuality, Health and Rights provides an authoritative overview of the main issues in the field today. Leading academics and practitioners are brought together to reflect on past, present and future approaches to understanding and promoting sexual health and rights. Divided into nine parts, it covers: Pioneering beginnings Language, discourse and sexual categories From sexuality to health The reproductive imperative How to have sex in an epidemic The choreography of sex The darker side of sex From sexual health to sexual rights Struggles for erotic justice This handbook surveys the state of the discipline and offers an examination and discussion of emerging, controversial and cutting edge areas. It is an essential reference for academics and researchers in the fields of sexuality studies, sexual health and human rights, and offers key reading for more advanced students.

Book The Quest for Sexual Health

Download or read book The Quest for Sexual Health written by Steven Epstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an entryway into the distinctive worlds of sexual health and a window onto their spillover effects, sociologist Steven Epstein traces the development of the concept and parses the debates that swirl around it. Since the 1970s, health professionals, researchers, governments, advocacy groups, and commercial interests have invested in the pursuit of something called "sexual health." Under this expansive banner, a wide array of programs have been launched, organizations founded, initiatives funded, products sold—and yet, no book before this one asks: What does it mean to be sexually healthy? When did people conceive of a form of health called sexual health? And how did it become the gateway to addressing a host of social harms and the reimagining of private desires and public dreams? Conjoining "sexual" with "health" changes both terms: it alters how we conceive of sexuality and transforms what it means to be healthy, prompting new expectations of what medicine can provide. Yet the ideal of achieving sexual health remains elusive and open-ended, and the benefits and costs of promoting it are unevenly distributed across genders, races, and sexual identities. Rather than a thing apart, sexual health is intertwined with nearly every conceivable topical debate—from sexual dysfunction to sexual violence, from reproductive freedom to the practicalities of sexual contact in a pandemic. In this book Steven Epstein analyzes the rise, proliferation, uptake, and sprawling consequences of sexual health activities, offering critical tools to assess those consequences, expand capacities for collective decision making, and identify pathways that promote social justice.

Book Sexual and Reproductive Health

Download or read book Sexual and Reproductive Health written by Paul Van Look and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume presents the highlights of current global thinking about sexual and reproductive health. Major changes have taken place in the last 15 years in the way decision-makers think about the subject and the manner in which programmes deliver comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services. The turning point was the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo, Egypt, in 1994. ICPD was a watershed for several reasons. First, more than in any of the preceding United Nations population conferences, the issue of population was clearly placed as being central to sustainable development. Second, the narrow focus on population growth ("the population bomb") which had been a neo-Malthusian concern and preoccupation ever since the Club of Rome published its 1972 report Limits to Growth, was replaced by the comprehensive concept of (sexual and) reproductive health. Third, and linked to the definition and introduction of the reproductive health concept, was the strong call for a paradigm shift away from a policy environment driven by demographic considerations (sometimes to the point of using coercion in family planning services in order to reach demographic targets) to an environment that recognized the right of individuals to make their own choices. And, last but not least, ICPD as well as the Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW) held the following year in Beijing, People's Republic of China, strongly emphasized that the rights of women and men to good sexual and reproductive health are firmly grounded in universal human rights"--Provided by publisher.

Book Contraception in the Third Millennium

Download or read book Contraception in the Third Millennium written by Elisabeth Aubeny and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, we have control over our fertility. Many forms of contraception are widely available to most of the population. An authoritative clinical reference, Contraception in the Third Millennium: A (R) evolution in Reproductive and Sexual Health examines the issues involved from all sides. The book covers the theoretical and practical aspects of present and future contraception and sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Topics include: reproductive health, progestins and antiprogestins, emergency contraception, family planning, contraception in perimenopause, optimizing contraceptive services, availability of abortion, strategies and prevention of STDs, and sexual health in adolescence and preventative behavior. It also touches on the relationship between sexuality, STDs, and contraception. The "Meet the Experts and Workshops" section provides answers to practical questions and the reality of contraception in many countries. We are now in the third generation of the contraceptive revolution. Although many methods have been available since the early part of this century, it is only the last three generations that have had a readily available source of contraception. The third generation has more choices, but they also face more issues, sooner, than previous generations. Despite the spread of contraception throughout the Western world, advances are still needed. Contraception in the Third Millennium: A (R) Evolution in Reproductive and Sexual Health provides a guide to new and recurring issues in achieving successful contraception and reproductive health care.

Book Sexual and Reproductive Health

Download or read book Sexual and Reproductive Health written by Paul Van Look and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together two areas of health that are among the foci of current development efforts, as articulated by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), namely sexual and reproductive health (MDG 5: improve maternal health, target 2: achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health); and Gender (MDG 3: promote gender equality and empower women). Few, if any, published books have dealt in a comprehensive way with public health aspects of these two strongly interrelated areas of health. Most published volumes devoted to sexual and reproductive health have a strong clinical focus, whereas books on gender tend to concentrate primarily on the socio-cultural and anthropological aspects of the subject. Focuses on the relationship between sexual and reproductive behaviors and the resulting impact on populations and societies as a group Provides a science-based approach to identifying appropriate response plans, adaptations, and mitigation steps for related behaviors Explores the financial and societal impact of behavioral choices Includes new preface specifically for this audience

Book Women Sexuality and the Political Power of Pleasure

Download or read book Women Sexuality and the Political Power of Pleasure written by Susie Jolly and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering collection explores the ways in which positive, pleasure-focused approaches to sexuality can empower women. Gender and development has tended to engage with sexuality only in relation to violence and ill-health. Although this has been hugely important in challenging violence against women, over-emphasizing these negative aspects has dovetailed with conservative ideologies that associate women’s sexualities with danger and fear. On the other hand, the media, the pharmaceutical industry, and pornography more broadly celebrate the pleasures of sex in ways that can be just as oppressive, often implying that only certain types of people - young, heterosexual, able-bodied, HIV-negative - are eligible for sexual pleasure. Women, Sexuality and the Political Power of Pleasure brings together challenges to these strictures and exclusions from both the South and North of the globe, with examples of activism, advocacy and programming which use pleasure as an entry point. It shows how positive approaches to pleasure and sexuality can enhance equality and empowerment for all.

Download or read book Reproductive Health written by Arlette Campbell White and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While women in developing countries continue to die in large numbers in child birth, Population and Reproductive Health specialists and advocates around the world are struggling to keep the policy agenda focused on the rights and needs of poor women. The 1994 Cairo Conference and Program of Action changed how we do business, and opened many doors, but the agenda is not complete and has stalled in a number of ways. At the country level, governments and donors are making difficult choices about how and where to allocate scarce human and financial resources. Funding approaches have moved away from the implementation of narrowly directed health programs to a broader approach of health system development and reform. At the same time, countries are also centering their development agenda on the broad goal of poverty reduction. This volume addresses a large knowledge and capacity gap in the Reproductive Health community and provides tools for key actors to empower faster positive change. It is a synopsis of the materials developed for WBI's learning program on Achieving the Millennium Development Goals: Poverty Reduction, Reproductive Health and Health Sector Reform. The volume brings together knowledge about epidemiology, demography, economics, and trends in global financial assistance. The volume also introduces practical tools such as benefit incidence analysis, costing, and stakeholder analysis to strengthen the evidence base for policy and to address the political economy factors for reform."
