Book excerpt: Celebrating one of AFL's longest-standing and most iconic traditions Have you ever wondered what makes Australian Rules Football so unique? Sure, the rules are unmistakably different to other sports, but it's the bizarre traditions and idiosyncrasies that make the game uniquely ours. One of those quirks is the team banner – an essential element of the pre-match build-up that has connected fans with their heroes for more than 80 years. The humble banner, or run-through as it's known by the purists, has become an iconic symbol of our love for the game. It's why cheer squads around the country dedicate countless hours each and every week to delicately craft their messages on crepe. This painstaking process culminates in a fleeting moment of glory as the teams run onto the ground before the banner is torn (quite literally) to shreds. From the funny to the offensive, the emotional to the political, banners come in all shapes and sizes and have evolved considerably, reflecting not only a changing cultural landscape but a changing game itself. Footy Banners: A Complete Run-Through is a collection of historical images, stories and unforgettable moments that pay homage to one of our game's longest-lasting rituals.

Book Collingwood

Book excerpt: A multi-generational saga of football, love, war, forgiveness and, most critically, identityEvery year when Collingwood plays Essendon in the AFL’s annual Anzac Day match, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire carries an old horseshoe into the team’s changing rooms and passes it around. The players examine it as he relates the great footy club story behind it. It’s early in the twentieth century and Doc Seddon, a Collingwood player, introduces his childhood sweetheart, Louie, to his dashing team mate, Paddy Rowan. Paddy sweeps Louie off her feet and they marry. But war intervenes. Doc and Paddy go off to fight, leaving Louie to raise Paddy’s baby. When Paddy is killed, Doc promises that he will always look after Paddy’s wife and child. Just before the 1917 Grand Final, he sends a horseshoe back from the Somme, where he continued to serve. It brings the Magpies luck—they win.It is a lovely story. Except, of course, that fairytales didn’t come true in Collingwood, the biggest slum of Melbourne. What really happened to them is a much grittier tale.

Download or read book The Bad Boys of Footy written by Matthew Webber and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AFL, Football, NRL and Rugby: Modern Failings Of Football's Finest. We read about footballers every day. We celebrate their physical feats, their freakish athleticism, their guile and poise. We rejoice in their glories. We feel their hurt. We share their tears. But more and more, football is not enough. Nowadays off-field behaviour steals more than its share of column space. Private lives are no longer. Mistakes are magnified. And we in the outer are voyeurs. We delve for details. We delight in knowing everything. We are judge and juror. Sometimes we are executioner. And when footballers stumble our damnation is usually ruthless. In the end we measure men to a standard we'd never come close to matching ourselves. Crossing all four winter codes, The Bad Boys of Footy shines a critical light on the tales of a host contemporary footballing miscreants those who've tripped up, boozed, lied, cheated, whacked, thumped, kicked, scratched, frittered, robbed, and bottomed out. Everybody screws up. Of course they do. But no one screws up like a modern day gladiator.
