Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Footprints in the Mind is a collection of short stories in two parts. I was tempted to call the stories Footprints in the Sand, but on reflection I realized that footprints in sand do not last very long whereas the "footprints" I wish to describe are embedded in my mind. I hasten to add, however, that the stories are fictional. I probably have met some people like those in the stories and perhaps at some subconscious level they are real but my stories are a work of fiction. I cannot honestly say where they come from. They seem to pop up out of nowhere.

Connected by circumstance and destiny, the lives of a celebrity model in New York, a goatherd from the upper Nile valley, and a young Jew cast out of his native land set off a chain of events amid lyrical evocations of the Egypt that fostered them all. How they navigate their lives and the fault lines that exist in each of them forms the substance of a complex novel of chance, passion, and history. Book No Footprints in the Sand

Download or read book No Footprints in the Sand written by Henry Kalalahilimoku Nalaielua and published by Watermark Pub. This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Henry Nalaielua was diagnosed with Hansen's disease in 1936 and taken from his home and family, he began a journey of exile that led him to Kalaupapa—the remote settlement with the tragic history on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. During its century as a virtual prison, more than 8,000 people were exiled to Kalaupapa, until the introduction of sulfone drugs in the 1940s. Today fewer than 30 patients remain. This is Henry's story—an unforgettable memoir of the boy who grew to build a full and joyous life at Kalaupapa, and still calls it home today. No Footprints in the Sand is one of only a few memoirs ever shared with the public by a Kalaupapa patient. Its intimacy and candor make it, in the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin, “a rare and precious human document.” Nalaielua's story is an inspiring one; despite exile, physical challenges and the severing of family ties, he has faced life—as an artist, musician and historian—with courage, honesty, hope and humor.

Book Train Your Mind Change Your Brain

Download or read book Train Your Mind Change Your Brain written by Sharon Begley and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-11-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to reveal that, contrary to popular belief, we have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. Recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity—the ability of the brain to change in response to experience—reveal that the brain is capable of altering its structure and function, and even of generating new neurons, a power we retain well into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, compensate for disabilities, rewire itself to overcome dyslexia, and break cycles of depression and OCD. And as scientists are learning from studies performed on Buddhist monks, it is not only the outside world that can change the brain, so can the mind and, in particular, focused attention through the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness. With her gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, science writer Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact and takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human. Praise for Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain “There are two great things about this book. One is that it shows us how nothing about our brains is set in stone. The other is that it is written by Sharon Begley, one of the best science writers around. Begley is superb at framing the latest facts within the larger context of the field. This is a terrific book.”—Robert M. Sapolsky, author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers “Excellent . . . elegant and lucid prose . . . an open mind here will be rewarded.”—Discover “A strong dose of hope along with a strong does of science and Buddhist thought.”—The San Diego Union-Tribune

Sightings of the spirit of Wren Welborne an early settler in the Lands of the Twin Springs compels Jenny to read the journal Daniel has discovered. Within the journal’s cover, she comes upon documentation vital to decades-old, land claims disputes. She must seek out legal experts in whom she could entrust this journal. A downturn in the business climate forces Austin to accept a promising position in Western Canada. With mixed emotions, Jenny and Daniel follow Austin to an up-scale, townhouse community near the university where Daniel is enrolled. In his first semester, Daniel encounters a segment of academia hostile to American influences on established Canadian culture. Trapped in the bitter cold and perpetual darkness of a far-north winter, Jenny becomes ill. Daniel is abducted; his friend, Raine a Métis gravely injured. I started to become more aware of all the other children that were being killed in so many ways, by killers, abuse by parents or friends, drugs, suicide, and gang violence. I would think, It's just not fair! Not only has another child died, but they were someone's child. Another mother, father, grandparent and friend will have to feel their heart shattering for eternity, always having tears in their eyes.
