Book Footprints in Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Footprints in Spain Classic Reprint written by H. A. Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Footprints in Spain Curious though it may seem the average stranger, in Spain, finds the country of such absorbing interest, that he has little attention to spare for the inhabitants. It is not modern Spain that appeals to him, but that mighty Empire of the past, which strews the entire Peninsula with monuments. Every historical building is a milestone on Time's highway. Each mighty Cathedral is an epic in granite and marble. The more he advances the further back he goes descending, step by step, the long stairway of the centuries until, at Cadiz, he comes face to face with the old gods, and knows that he has reached that far-off golden age beyond which mere man may not penetrate. To the primitive Spain of those days came the Phoenicians in their long many oared galleys. They were traders, not conquerors, or missionaries and established their emporiums on the seashore. In dealing with the native Iberian and Celtic tribes they trusted to their wits and avoided appealing to arms, and religious propaganda. Gradually, however, as their business expanded, they found themselves compelled to exercise a certain amount of political domination. This led to war, hence the legends of the battle of the Titans, in which Hercules, afterwards defied by the Greeks, emerged Victorious and. Founded Cadiz. The Phoenicians were followed by the Greeks, then came the Romans and the complete absorption of the Iberian Peninsula in the Latin empire for a period of six centuries. During it Spain rose to a high degree of civilisation, luxury and splendour, as is testified by widely scattered remains of fortifications, palaces, temples, theatres and viaducts. With the decline of Roman power the country was subjected to repeated barbarian raids from the north until the Visigoths established their supremacy. At first the new capital was at Toulouse but was subsequently moved south to Toledo. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book SPAIN S FOOTPRINTS IN PHILADELPHIA

Download or read book SPAIN S FOOTPRINTS IN PHILADELPHIA written by Emiliano Martin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-01-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Spain's Footprints in Philadelphia" brings to life an unknown Colonial history in the city. It is a recount of almost forgotten historic happenings, carried out by people from Spain in the city of Philadelphia. It is an authentic display of information, a touching story narrated by someone with experience as an immigrant from Spain in North America. Without being an extensive work of investigation, it is indeed an interesting attempt to chronologically describe the daily steps taken by Spaniards that somehow left behind an indelible set of footprints worth mentioning. Their stories were often ignored, but not forgotten in the memory of those who are fond of the past. In a way this book is a dedication to those who helped to mold the American frame and maintain the "Spanish torch" lit while away from their homeland of Spain.

Book Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks

Download or read book Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks written by Andreas Pastoors and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book explains that after long periods of prehistoric research in which the importance of the archaeological as well as the natural context of rock art has been constantly underestimated, research has now begun to take this context into focus for documentation, analysis, interpretation and understanding. Human footprints are prominent among the long-time under-researched features of the context in caves with rock art. In order to compensate for this neglect an innovative research program has been established several years ago that focuses on the merging of indigenous knowledge and western archaeological science for the benefit of both sides. The book gathers first the methodological diversity in the analysis of human tracks. Here major representatives of anthropological, statistical and traditional approaches feature the multi-layered methods available for the analysis of human tracks. Second it compiles case studies from around the globe of prehistoric human tracks. For the first time, the most important sites which have been found worldwide are published in a single publication. The third focus of this book is on firsthand experiences of researchers with indigenous tracking experts from around the globe, expounding on how archaeological sciencecan benefit from the ancestral knowledge. This book will be of interest to professional archaeologists, graduate students, ecologists, cultural anthropologists and laypeople, especially those focussing on hunting-gathering and pastoralist communities and who appreciate indigenous knowledge.--

Book Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe

Download or read book Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe written by Martin Lockley and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long and distinguished tradition of tracking dinosaurs and other extinct animals in Europe dates back to the 1830s. Yet this venerable tradition of scientific activity cannot compare in magnitude and scope with the unprecedented spate of discovery and documentation of the last few years. Now, following on the heels of his Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the Western United States, Martin Lockley teams up with Christian Meyer to present an up to date synthesis of the recent findings in the field of European fossil footprints. Drawing extensively on their own research results from studies in Britain, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, and elsewhere, the authors create a dynamic picture of mammal, reptile, bird, and amphibian "track-makers" throughout more than 300 million years of vertebrate evolution, placed in the context of Europe's changing ancient environments. Beginning with an introduction to tracking and a history of the European tracking tradition, Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe then charts a broad path of evolutionary proliferation from the proto-dinosaurs of the Early Triassic period to the dinosaurs' decline and disappearance in the Upper Cretaceous. The survey continues into the age of mammals and birds, ending with the cave art of our Paleolithic ancestors.

Book Dinosaur Footprints Trackways of La Rioja

Download or read book Dinosaur Footprints Trackways of La Rioja written by Félix Pérez-Lorente and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to this fossil-rich area of Spain: “Likely to become a landmark reference in dinosaur ichnology.” —James O. Farlow During the Early Cretaceous, lakes, meandering streams, and flood plains covered the region where the current foothills of Rioja now exist. Today the area is known for its wine and for the dozens of sites where footprints and trackways of dinosaurs, amphibians, and even pterosaurs can be seen. The dinosaurs that lived here 120 million years ago left their footsteps imprinted in the mud and moist soil. Now fossilized in rock, they have turned Rioja into one of the most valuable dinosaur footprint sites in all of Europe. Félix Pérez-Lorente and his colleagues have published extensively on the region, mostly in Spanish-language journals. In this volume, Pérez-Lorente provides an up-to-date synthesis of that research in English. He offers detailed descriptions of the sites, footprints, and trackways—and explains what these prints and tracks can tell us about the animals who made them.
