Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of humorous anecdotes features stories from some of the biggest names in UK football. The book is divided into seven sections with tales from backroom staff, celebrities, commentators and pundits, players, fans, managers and even refs. Among the contributors are Gary Lineker, Jimmy Hill, John Motson, Denis Law, Craig Brown, Alex McLeish, John Rowbotham, David Elleray, Billy Connolly, Rod Stewart and Andy Cameron, all of whom have very funny tales to tell about their experiences of the beautiful game. Alex McLeish, for example, remembers a time when the fantastic Aberdeen team of the early eighties was playing away from home and he was sharing a hotel room with another member of the squad who happened to have a reputation for sleepwalking. Alex was awakened one night to find his team mate trying to coax his Adidas kit bag to go for a walk - Alex's sleepwalking roommate thought it was his dog! Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker tells of an incident, early in his playing career, when his manager was giving the team a right telling-off because, in response to a 'fan' spitting at the team as they were leaving the pitch after a particularly poor performance, one of the players had spat back. The manager finished his tirade about how unacceptable such behaviour was by saying, 'And, if it happens again, you'll just have to swallow it.'

Book Finn McCool s Football Club

Download or read book Finn McCool s Football Club written by Stephen Rea and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Belfast-born Stephen Rea moved to New Orleans, a city where "football" means something entirely different than what it does back home. After struggling to find a place to watch European soccer games, Rea discovered Finn McCool's pub and its mixed clientele of good-humored European ex-pats, charismatic New Orleanians, and assorted matchless personalities. Before long he was playing on the pub's motley over-thirty-five fledgling soccer team. Gathered at the bar on August 27, 2005, members of the team were discussing their upcoming match, untroubled by the impending storm and unknowing that their city and team would nearly be obliterated by Hurricane Katrina in a matter of hours. Days later, the lucky among them were scattered across the country; the others struggled to survive as they awaited rescue in New Orleans. With clarity and compassion, Rea examines the disaster as he profiles the experiences of his teammates and their efforts to resurrect the team and pub that had become so central in all of their lives. A gripping and moving memoir about an unusual pub team and a devastating natural disaster, Finn McCool’s Football Club is a celebration of ex-pats and pubs, soccer and sportsmanship, and the strength it takes to rebuild a team, a city, and a life.

Book Scoring Points Love and Football in the Age of AIDS

Download or read book Scoring Points Love and Football in the Age of AIDS written by Gary D. Gerson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Gerson led an uneventful life growing up Jewish in East Tennessee. This changed when he decided to walk onto the Vanderbilt football team with no prior experience, beginning a lifelong love for the game with four years of exhilaration and heartbreak. After juggling the challenges of infatuation, a bowl game, a major steroid scandal and ultimate dishonor at Vandy, Gerson's journeys brought him close to danger in Africa and India, a brush with the Yeti in the Himalaya, and more football in Amsterdam. When he fell in love with Shelley while teaching at the prestigious Cranbrook Kingswood School in Michigan, his journey for meaning took a sharp turn as she revealed her painful secret. Using his wife's triumphs and challenges as motivation, Gerson stepped back onto the football field at the age of 31 in Canada, scoring points along the way to his final personal victory. This book contains frank discussions about sex, relationships, love, AIDS, and death, but it is appropriate for all ages.

Book A Random History of Football

Download or read book A Random History of Football written by Colin Murray and published by Orion. This book was released on 2009-11-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A real knock-out' DAILY TELEGRAPH Random occurences that shaped the history of football - an alternative history of the game from loveable broadcaster Colin Murray. Nowadays a top Premiership football club can spend £50 million on a Portuguese pin-up or a legendary Italian goalkeeper, but you cannot take into account the effects of a dodgy takeaway meal, a dropped bottle of aftershave on a goalkeeper's toe, or the fact that your most creative player has to leave town because of a chance drunken encounter with another player's wife. It is these random moments that have shaped football as much as the headline-grabbing Cantona kung fu kick and that Russian linesman in 1966. In this witty alternative history of football you will learn: * Different sizes of football were used in each half of the inaugural World Cup Final of 1930. * Sheffield United almost signed Diego Maradona. * Saddam Hussein changed the result of an Iraq versus Chelsea match. * Bury FC's Robbie the Bobby tops the league of worst-behaved mascots. From the height of international football to the scandal of the Conference league Christmas party that cost far more than a bar-bill, Colin Murray tries his best to make you believe, once more, in football's unpredictability.
