Download or read book THE BOUNCING FOOTBALL written by Rodrigo Barnes and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He questioned the system and paid the price.... But 44 years ago, he played for the Dallas Cowboys for a single season as a middle linebacker. During his rookie season in 1973, the 23-year-old from Waco was a backup to a fading legend, Lee Roy Jordan, and was traded by October of 1974 before he vanished from pro football altogether just two years later. His official Rice University biography, penned upon his induction into that school's hall of fame in 2011, notes that his career was cut short by injuries. Bu that is not the whole truth. Rodrigo Barnes was, he has long believed, punished for being an outspoken black man in an industry controlled by white men. He was banished for being "a radical at a time when radicals weren't popular", beloved Cowboy's wide receiver Drew Pearson once said. It might be tempting to say that before there was a Colin Kaepernick, there was Rodrigo Barnes – a man exiled from the game he loved. There may be a certain truth to the comparison. Both men sacrificed their pro football careers to protest the treatment of black men in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process. Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive. As a daughter of Christ, you have been called to be more than an average mama. Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. M is for Mama offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.

Download or read book Football Fandom and Collective Memory written by Przemysław Nosal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the topic of identity and collective memory in football fandom. Drawing on global research in history, sociology and political science, the book looks at how, where and why football fans and supporters’ groups introduce particular role models into their self-identity and performative narratives. The book presents original, cutting-edge research that illustrates the complex, multidimensional nature of the (re-)formulation of collective memory and the elevation of role models. It looks at the processes by which some supporters’ groups celebrate historical and contemporary figures – including political leaders, warriors, revolutionaries, or armed resistance groups – that they believe embody patriotic, regional or nationalist virtues, as well as supporters’ groups who define their patriotism in opposition to these figures. The book presents cases ranging from Ukrainian football ultras in the shadow of Russian aggression, and Jewish role models in Germany’s collective football memory, to the symbology of Che Guevara and Diego Maradona in Brazilian and Argentinian football, to hero formation and the myths of national identity in Australian football. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology, culture or politics of sport, or in fandom, identity, nationalism more broadly in sociology, political science or history.
Download or read book Good Knights for California Football written by Isaac Bowers and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whenever the team wins, everyone wins and whenever the team loses, we do so as a team but we play giving 100% until the game is over." Readers who are not into sports need not worry, this title focuses more on the off-field drama and personal lives of the players, parents, and coaches more than it does on-field performance of the Knight's team. Great for fans of the sport, parents, children, and readers who enjoy pre-adolescent drama fiction, this title is a fast, fun, and satisfying read. --The US Review of Books Good Knights of California is a story about teamwork on and off the playing field. In order for each of us to reach our life goals, it is best to have a teamwork attitude. This attitude is shared by Brady, Leon, Jake, Martin, and Lisa Marie. What they have in common is after school football, with love of the game and a desire to win. The story reveals what motivates these characters to reach their goals by working as a team. Helping others win in life is the go, fight, win of this story and the characters truly earn the name "Good Knights." Good Knights of California was told to me chapter by chapter after Isaac came home from school. A natural athlete, Isaac Bowers excels in any sport he plays. Football is his passion. This story is fiction based on his experiences playing football. The story is Isaac's and I am Carol Welty Roper, the co-author. I worked to make his story come alive on paper.

Download or read book The Mama s Boy Myth written by Kate Stone Lombardi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times contributor offers a radical reexamination of a hot-button issue of the mother and son relationship and advocates the end of the "mama's boy" taboo. New York Times contributor Kate Stone Lombardi unveils the surprisingly close relationship between mothers and sons. Mother after mother confessed to Lombardi that her husband, brothers, and even female friends and family criticize the fact that she is "too close" to her sons. Many of these women are often startled by the strong connection they feel with their sons; but rarely do they talk about it because society tells them to push their little boys away and not "baby" them with too much cuddling and comforting. It is as if there were an existing playbook-based on gender preconceptions dating back to Freud, Oedipus, and beyond-that prescribes the way mothers and their sons should interact. Lombardi's much-needed narrative is the first and only book to share truly revealing interviews with mothers who have close relationships with their sons, as well as interviews with these women's sons and husbands. Lombardi persuasively argues that the rise of the new male-one who is more emotionally intelligent and more sensitive without being less "manly"-is directly attributable to women who are rejecting the "mama's boy" taboo. Highlighting new scientific studies, The Mama's Boy Myth begins a fresh story-one that will be welcomed by mothers, fathers, and sons alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional football is the most popular sport in the United States today. With so many famous players from the past and present, some of whom achieved notoriety because of a persona they created, there are fans who have also made a name for themselves by either their work and loyalty for their team, or by creating an alter ego with respect to how they cheer or support their team. Some have incredibly wild and outrageous outfits. On game days, some of these diehard fans take longer to get themselves ready for games than the players they cheer for! The face paint, the outrageous outfits, the chants and cheers, and the attention to detail are what make these fans unique. During football season, these diehard fans can be seen each weekend as they showcase themselves in support of their team in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide. In 1998, Visa sponsored a national contest to find the wildest, most loyal, and most intriguing fans for each team in the league. The award was entitled, The Visa Hall of Fans Award as fans were chosen from each team based on their submitted essays and photos. Contestants had to explain why they should represent their respective team in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. At the time, a special wing in the Hall was created to honor these diehard fans. Visa awarded plaques to the winners -- originally at the Hall, and later in front of the hometown fans at each team s stadium. The Hall of Fame displayed the plaques for a year until the new class of fans was selected and their plaques were displayed. At that point, the prior year s winners had their names placed on a permanent wall plaque in the Hall of Fans wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Since the days of the original Visa promotion, this group of honorees has carried on the tradition of recognizing ultimate fans each year. Some of the fans are easily recognizable by their outfits and their nicknames. Sadly, some have passed on. This book profiles and showcases many of those fans who were honored by Visa at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As you read through the book, you will undoubtedly recognize many of these famous fans. But for those fans who are not so easily recognized as some, this book s aim is to illustrate that all of the fans who were honored by Visa possess as much passion, loyalty and enthusiasm as the next. So when you watch Pro Football this season and always, keep this book handy and when the cameras pan the NFL stadiums, see how many faces you can spot from the group that calls themselves .. Pro Football s Most Passionate Fans!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean when a hit that knocks an American football player unconscious is cheered by spectators? What are the consequences of such violence for the participants of this sport and for the entertainment culture in which it exists? This book brings together scholars and sport commentators to examine the relationship between American football, violence and the larger relations of power within contemporary society. From high school and college to the NFL, Football, Culture, and Power analyses the social, political and cultural imprint of America’s national pastime. The NFL’s participation in and production of hegemonic masculinity, alongside its practices of racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism, provokes us to think deeply about the historical and contemporary systems of violence we are invested in and entertained by. This social scientific analysis of American football considers both the positive and negative power of the game, generating discussion and calling for accountability. It is fascinating reading for all students and scholars of sports studies with an interest in American football and the wider social impact of sport.
