Book Rugby Soccer and Irish Society

Download or read book Rugby Soccer and Irish Society written by Conor Murray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first academic all-island history of either rugby union or association football, two of the three most popular male sporting pastimes in Ireland, across the seven decades that followed the political partition of that country between 1920 and 1922. It moves beyond the occasionally simplistic explanations of the development of Irish sport that have focused on political and sectarian divisions, and goes deeper into the social, cultural and geographical dynamics of the island of Ireland to explain why certain people have played certain games in certain places. Drawing on historical and archival sources as well as cutting-edge geographical information systems, the book brings to life the spatial trends in each game’s administrative development and geographical distribution, that have not normally been a feature of many previous histories of Irish sport. The book also examines first-and-second-hand accounts of athletes and administrators involved in rugby and football during that period, to explore what it meant to represent a province or country at these crucial moments in Irish history and compares the Irish experience of both sports with experiences in other comparable countries. Shining important new light on the interactions between Irish rugby and football and the political, social, economic and cultural trends of Ireland in the twentieth century, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the history of sport, Ireland or the UK.

Book excerpt: Sometimes we have to battle through barriers to achieve our dreams. These are the stories of men and women who fought for fairness. From the first black footballer to appear for Wales, to the first Welsh woman to become a doctor and the slave’s daughter who worked to help others. Inspiring stories of people who followed their hearts and made life better, not only for themselves, but for others. The book features a bonus section on Wales' connections with slavery, helping teachers to tackle this difficult and important subject. Teacher Feedback: “We used Eric Ngalle’s story to explain some of the reasons why people come to Wales from all around the world, and to show what migration and asylum mean. It helped our children understand the experiences of some of their classmates.” “The section on Wales and slavery was very helpful. Recommended.” “I linked the Chapter on Frances Batty Shand to the ebook Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt as part of planning on an Expressive Arts Topic. I took the class to the ‘Picton Reframed Exhibition’ in the National Museum in Cardiff. We were able to touch on enslavement in a way which was appropriate but did not shy away from the realities and the learners responded with passion and emotion to the story. I think there is huge potential for delving even deeper into these difficult topics with the help of books like these.”

Book The Early Years of the FA Cup

Download or read book The Early Years of the FA Cup written by James W Bancroft and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 150th anniversary of the first FA Cup competition, the earliest knockout tournament in the history of football, will be celebrated during the 2021-2022 season. The first set of matches was played on 11 November 1871, with the Engineers reaching the final played at Kennington Oval on 16 March 1872. During the first decade of the competition three teams associated with the military, Royal Engineers, 1st Surrey Rifles and 105th Regiment, were involved in 74 matches. They won more than half of them and scored 154 goals. The Army also produced one of the most respected administrators in the history of football, in the form of Major Francis Marindin, who was involved in the founding of the FA Cup, played in two finals, and refereed a further nine. Military men and units provided a number of ‘firsts’ in the early years of football. The Royal Engineers played in the first ever FA Cup final; Lieutenant James Prinsep of the Essex Regiment was the youngest footballer to appear in an FA Cup final until 2004, although he remains the youngest to complete a full match; Lieutenant William Maynard of the 1st Surrey Rifles played for England in the first ever official international match against Scotland; Captain William Kenyon-Slaney of the Grenadier Guards scored the first ever goal in an official international match, while playing for England; and Lieutenant Henry Renny-Tailyour of the Royal Engineers scored the first ever goal for Scotland in the same match. At a time when there has been talk of a financially-motivated breakaway European Super League, James gives the reader the opportunity to look back at a time when football was played for the game itself. Using his vast knowledge concerning Victorian football and military history, The Early Years of the FA Cup explores the fascinating history of the Army’s involvement in the early years of the world’s most popular sport. With detailed descriptions of the finals and other matches involving the military teams during football’s heyday, this book, for the first time, then follows the men as they went on campaigns to build roads and bridges in hostile territory, provide maps for commanders in famous conflicts such as The Zulu War, Afghanistan, the Sudan, and the Boer Wars, and saw active service on the Western Front during the First World War. In some cases they never returned. Often great footballers are referred to as ‘heroes’ – in the case of the men who played for the Army teams in the early FA Cup competitions, such an epithet is genuinely true.
