Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Football for Public and Player In the pages that follow the author has endeavored by means of simple diagrams, and explanations shorn as far as possible of technicality, to give alike to the spectator and the younger player, especially the ambitious schoolboy who has not had the advantage of expert coaching either on the blackboard or afield, some idea of the plays that have been and are successful under the existing rules, and of the generalship that either wins games or loses them with honor. The plays and the use of them tell the story, and if the spec tator will apply inductive reasoning to the big games, finding his rule of play from the cases at hand, he will find the fascination of the game more than trebled. Book The Book of Rules of the Game of Foot Ball

Download or read book The Book of Rules of the Game of Foot Ball written by Charles William Alcock and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Rules of the Game of Foot Ball: As Adopted and Played by the English Football Associations Effecting a kick at goal Seems rather complicated, but once learnt it can never be forgotten. The side who have gained the touch-down retire, and depute two of their players to take the'ball out. The one who is to kick the ball brings it up to the line of goal in a straight line from where it was touched down. In When touched down between the posts it may be taken to either, but not between; inside the line he makes a mark with his heel, and touches the ball down upon it. He then, still keeping inside the line, retires a pace ortwo from his mark, for from this his opponents may stretch out and 1' maul him if they can, and kicks the ball gently off his toe into the hands of his companion, who is standing directly opposite him, only just outside the goal-line, to receive it. This man instantly makes a mark with his heel as near to goal as possible, and from this last mark the two players proceed straight out into the ground, and when they have reached a convenient spot for a place-kick, the kicker makes a small nick for the ball to rest in, and, on a level with this, the rest of the side form a line stretching away in front of the enemy's goal-line, behind Which their opponents are arranged like manner, intently watching the holder of the ball. (he, with one knee on the ground, holds it just ofi' the grass, waiting for the kicker's sign before grounding it; Directly he places it in the 'mark, the opponents may charge, and try and maul the kicker, or touch the ball on its way to goal, in which case no goal is scored, even though the ball go fairly over the cross-bar, and if any other player eathe attacking side tot the ball after it has been kicked into the placer's hands, their Opponents may instantly charge and maul. 'if a goal is obtained, the sides change over to try their luekfrom afresh position, whenthe sidewho 'lost the goal kick o ' from the middle of the ground'as at the'comi'iieticement of the match. If the try is ainthe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Football the Rugby Game Classic Reprint

Download or read book Football the Rugby Game Classic Reprint written by Harry Vassall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the original rules of rugby as well as many other historical details of the great game in this 125 year old short-but-sweet treasure. Originally published in 1889 Harry Vassall's Football, The Rugby Game briefly discusses the rules, positions, and general flow of a game of rugby. At less than 75 pages, of which nearly 20 are composed of an appendix, this is clearly a book intended to be an introduction to the sport. He opens with a brief history of rugby and the development of the game and its rules over time. From there, Vassall begins a more technical discussion of the specific positions within rugby, dedicating individual chapters to the roles of the fullback, three quarterback, halfback, and forward. The author also discusses the role of the referee, and the evolution of rugby rules. The book concludes with an appendix presenting the rules of rugby current in his time. Vassal presents the information in a thorough but easy to understand style, opening up the game (which as even its best fans will appeciate can be a little Byzantine at times) for the layman and casual fan. The chapters highlighting the specific positions are the bread and butter of Vassall's book and present the book's most important information. While the game of rugby has certainly evolved since this book's publication, many of the foundational techniques are unchanged, although it is fascinating to compare those that have with their equivalents today. For those interested in rugby, especially its history and how it used to be played (when men were men, and a pack of gigantic Welshmen charging straight at you was a good afternoon's entertainment) Vassall's book remains a worthwhile read. Book The Anatomy of a Game

Download or read book The Anatomy of a Game written by David M. Nelson and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first football history to chronicle year by year how playing rules developed the game. Football - a four-dimensional game of rushing, kicking, forward passing, and backward passing - has had more playing rule changes since its inception than any other sport. The Anatomy of a Game follows football rules from the game's European roots through its beginning in the United States to its position as the number-one spectator sport in the 1990s. Highlighted are details of the crisis years that changed the character of the game, with coaches and rules committee members the featured players. David M. Nelson, who served on the NCAA Rules Committee longer than Walter Camp, provides personal insight into all Rules Committee meetings since 1958, as well as an appendix - chronological and by rule - listing every change since 1876." "Ever since the first two human beings kicked, threw, or batted an object competitively, there have been playing rules. Games are mentioned in the Bible, and the Romans brought football's forerunner to Britain, from where it was exported to the United States. It was in the United States that college students decided to make their game rugby rather than soccer. Although the students invented United States football and made the first rules, their ruling power was eventually lost to the faculty, administrators, coaches, rules committees, and the NCAA." "Beginning as a brutal sport, football survived several crises before and after the turn of the century, eventually becoming respectable. The 1931 injury crisis split the high school and college rules and the same year the professionals went their own way, with rules largely based on spectator appeal." "Today the sport is a national treasure primarily because of its playing rules, over seven hundred in total, which make college football unique among the world's team sports. Moreover, football remains an American game, never having the same impact in other countries as do baseball and basketball." "Rules make the game, but people make the rules. Football survived the major crises that threatened the game because committee members adhered to the precepts that had governed football since its inception. The game began with an attempt to have a consistent code of justice, personal accountability, and equality. In some sense the playing rules are a type of moral precept that explains in the simplest terms what can and cannot be done. The Football Code, which first prefaced the rules in 1916, makes the game - more than any other sport - a moral one because it sets standards for coaching, playing, sportsmanship, and officiating."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law and Practice as to References: And the Powers and Duties; Referees, With Numerous Forms The office of a referee under the Code of !New York has been greatly varied and enlarged from that which was held under the former law and practice, or was held by a Master in Chancery, whose functions he now fills to a certain extent. 1. In a number of cases - in all by consent of parties and Court - he may become vested with the jurisdiction of a judge, but yet for that particular case only. His decision in that case is equivalent to the judgment of a Court at Special Term, and only reviewable in the same manner. In Woodruff vs. Dickie (31 Howard's Pr. Rep., 104) the Court says: "Referees are no longer officers of or under the control of the Court. They become by appointment an independent tribunal, having such powers as are given by the statute; and their decisions are reviewed only on appeal from their judgments."
