This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all philosophize at times. What do we do when we philosophize? We think in a rather concentrated, deep sort of way. In so doing, we do not call ourselves Philosophers; it would be rather pretentious of us if we did. Philosophers are those--generally in university departments of Philosophy--who think, and ask questions, about what reality is made of, what we know, and how we should behave. Philosophers are not fools; but after two and a half thousand years, they have not come up with agreed answers to their questions that are any more useful, or certain, than thinkers who do not call themselves Philosophers. Many of those who do are still caught up in the thought-forms of theology; all are in pursuit of a lost cause except those who write what might be written by thinkers in other domains. Is it not time to admit that there is nothing very special about Philosophy?Dr. Swatridge studied Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham.Since 1998, he has been a visiting lecturer, in critical thinking and theart of argument, at the universities of PANNONIA (Veszprém); SZEGED;PÁZMÁNY PÉTER, and KÁROLI GÁSPÁR (Budapest), and ESZTERHÁZYKÁROLI (Eger), in Hungary, and at institutions of higher education in Poland(Krosno), and Petru Maior University (Târgu Mureş) in Romania. His longstandingbase has been MISKOLC UNIVERSITY in North-Eastern Hungary, where he teaches in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. His previous booksinclude AN OXFORD GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE ARGUMENT AND CRITICALTHINKING (Oxford University Press); A COUNTRY FULL OF ALIENS,and TRANSYLVANIA; TRUTH, MYTH, PERSPECTIVE (both published byCorvina Books, Budapest).

For no matter how much she and her husband earn, she spends more. Driven by a desire to be loved by his mother, young Paul starts betting on the horses with the family's gardener. He wins, wins and just keeps winning. But, as quickly as he hands her the money, Hester has splurged it away. Then, as Derby day approaches, the spooky secret of Paul's endless run of luck is revealed. As tragedy beckons, will Paul win his mother's love? This book is perfect for fans of Edgar Allan Poe and Ernest Hemingway. It was made into the 1949 fantasy film 'The Rocking Horse Winner', starring John Howard Davies, Valerie Hobson and John Mills. DH Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English writer and poet. He was at the centre of a great deal of controversy during and after his life, with the explicit nature of some of his novels leading to censorship and protests. Many critics admired his imaginative and deeply descriptive style, though. Among his best-known novels are 'Sons and Lovers', 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', 'The Rainbow' and 'Women in Love'.

Download or read book The Black Cloud written by Fred Hoyle and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1959 classic 'hard' science-fiction novel by renowned Cambridge astronomer and cosmologist Fred Hoyle. Tracks the progress of a giant black cloud that comes towards Earth and sits in front of the sun, causing widespread panic and death. A select group of scientists and astronomers - including the dignified Astronomer Royal, the pipe smoking Dr Marlowe and the maverick, eccentric Professor Kingsly - engage in a mad race to understand and communicate with the cloud, battling against trigger happy politicians. In the pacy, engaging style of John Wyndham and John Christopher, with plenty of hard science thrown in to add to the chillingly credible premise (he manages to foretell Artificial Intelligence, Optical Character Recognition and Text-to-Speech converters), Hoyle carries you breathlessly through to its thrilling end.

Let me be the best rider in England!" Download or read book Shakespeare s Folly written by Sam Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study contends that folly is of fundamental importance to the implicit philosophical vision of Shakespeare’s drama. The discourse of folly’s wordplay, jubilant ironies, and vertiginous paradoxes furnish Shakespeare with a way of understanding that lays bare the hypocrisies and absurdities of the serious world. Like Erasmus, More, and Montaigne before him, Shakespeare employs folly as a mode of understanding that does not arrogantly insist upon the veracity of its own claims – a fool’s truth, after all, is spoken by a fool. Yet, as this study demonstrates, Shakespearean folly is not the sole preserve of professional jesters and garrulous clowns, for it is also apparent on a thematic, conceptual, and formal level in virtually all of his plays. Examining canonical histories, comedies, and tragedies, this study is the first to either contextualize Shakespearean folly within European humanist thought, or to argue that Shakespeare’s philosophy of folly is part of a subterranean strand of Western philosophy, which itself reflects upon the folly of the wise. This strand runs from the philosopher-fool Socrates through to Montaigne and on to Nietzsche, but finds its most sustained expression in the Critical Theory of the mid to late twentieth-century, when the self-destructive potential latent in rationality became an historical reality. This book makes a substantial contribution to the fields of Shakespeare, Renaissance humanism, Critical Theory, and Literature and Philosophy. It illustrates, moreover, how rediscovering the philosophical potential of folly may enable us to resist the growing dominance of instrumental thought in the cultural sphere.
Download or read book The Audio Expert written by Ethan Winer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Audio Expert is a comprehensive reference that covers all aspects of audio, with many practical, as well as theoretical, explanations. Providing in-depth descriptions of how audio really works, using common sense plain-English explanations and mechanical analogies with minimal math, the book is written for people who want to understand audio at the deepest, most technical level, without needing an engineering degree. It's presented in an easy-to-read, conversational tone, and includes more than 400 figures and photos augmenting the text. The Audio Expert takes the intermediate to advanced recording engineer or audiophile and makes you an expert. The book goes far beyond merely explaining how audio "works." It brings together the concepts of audio, aural perception, musical instrument physics, acoustics, and basic electronics, showing how they're intimately related. Describing in great detail many of the practices and techniques used by recording and mixing engineers, the topics include video production and computers. Rather than merely showing how to use audio devices such as equalizers and compressors, Ethan Winer explains how they work internally, and how they are spec'd and tested. Most explanations are platform-agnostic, applying equally to Windows and Mac operating systems, and to most software and hardware. TheAudioExpertbook.com, the companion website, has audio and video examples to better present complex topics such as vibration and resonance. There are also videos demonstrating editing techniques and audio processing, as well as interviews with skilled musicians demonstrating their instruments and playing techniques.

Common believes that the phrase “let love have the last word” is not just a declaration; it is a statement of purpose, a daily promise. Love is the most powerful force on the planet, and ultimately the way you love determines who you are and how you experience life. Touching on God, self-love, partners, children, family, and community, Common explores the core tenets of love to help us understand what it means to receive and, most importantly, to give love. He moves from the personal—writing about his daughter, to whom he wants to be a better father—to the universal, where he observes that our society has become fractured under issues of race and politics. He knows there’s no quick remedy for all of the hurt in the world, but love—for yourself and for others—is where the healing begins. In his first public reveal, Common also shares a deeply personal experience of childhood molestation that he is now confronting…and forgiving. Courageous, insightful, brave, and characteristically authentic, Let Love Have the Last Word shares Common’s own unique and personal stories of the people and experiences that have led to a greater understanding of love and all it has to offer. It is a powerful call to action for a new generation of open hearts and minds, one that is sure to resonate for years to come.
