Book Ethnic American Food Today

Download or read book Ethnic American Food Today written by Lucy M. Long and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic American Food Today introduces readers to the myriad ethnic food cultures in the U.S. today. Entries are organized alphabetically by nation and present the background and history of each food culture along with explorations of the place of that food in mainstream American society today. Many of the entries draw upon ethnographic research and personal experience, giving insights into the meanings of various ethnic food traditions as well as into what, how, and why people of different ethnicities are actually eating today. The entries look at foodways—the network of activities surrounding food itself—as well as the beliefs and aesthetics surrounding that food, and the changes that have occurred over time and place. They also address stereotypes of that food culture and the culture’s influence on American eating habits and menus, describing foodways practices in both private and public contexts, such as restaurants, groceries, social organizations, and the contemporary world of culinary arts. Recipes of representative or iconic dishes are included. This timely two-volume encyclopedia addresses the complexity—and richness—of both ethnicity and food in America today.

This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee report that current arrangements for testing and control across the European food industry have failed UK consumers. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) needs clear powers and responsibilities so that it can respond more effectively to any future food adulteration scandal. The Committee's short inquiry into contamination of beef products by horsemeat and pork follows a growing problem of food adulteration across Europe, first reported from Ireland in January 2013. The report recommends: the FSA be given the statutory powers to require producers to undertake testing, taking into account the level of risk; all testing results must be reported to the FSA whether they are mandated by the FSA or carried out independently; a broader range of testing to provide greater assurance to consumers. The Committee warns the Government that it should not, at this time, propose to reduce the labelling standards applied to British food. Moreover, the findings to date are likely to be the tip of the iceberg. The strong indications that people have intentionally substituted horsemeat for beef lead the Committee to conclude that British consumers have been cynically and systematically duped in pursuit of profit by elements within the food industry.

Download or read book Eggs or Anarchy written by William Sitwell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eggs or Anarchy is one of the great, British stories of the Second World War yet to be told in full. It reveals the heroic tale of how Lord Woolton, Minister for Food, really fed Britain. As a nation at war, with supply routes under attack from the Axis powers and resources scarce, it was Woolton's job to fulfil his promise to the British people, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill in particular, that there would be food on the shelves each week. Persuading the public to not resort to the black market and to manage on the very limited ration was one thing, but Woolton had to fulfil his side of the bargain and maintain supplies in time of crisis. A grammar school-educated genius, he was a fish out of water in Churchill's cabinet and the PM himself doubted Woolton would survive due to the unstinting criticism he faced from colleagues, the press and public. This is the story of how he battled to save his own career while using every trick in his entrepreneurial book to secure supplies. He battled to outwit unscrupulous dealers on the black market streets of cities within the British Empire - such as Alexandria in Eygpt - persuading customs authorities to turn a blind eye to his import schemes. If Britain had gone hungry the outcome of the war could have been very different. This book, for the first time, finds out the real story of how Lord Woolton provided food for Britain and her colonies and discovers that for him there were days when it was literally a choice of 'eggs or anarchy'.

Download or read book Food and Public Health written by Wendy Wills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on food policy, and its relationship to public health, as an increasingly important issue in today’s society. Contributors highlight the lack of global regulation in the food supply chain and explore the common tendency to leave regulation to markets and to individual consumer decisions. In a period where there is growing concern about the sustainability of contemporary food systems, this book considers the inadequate response made to issues of food waste where solutions in high income countries are dependent on lifestyle and consumer behaviour. It offers an insight in to the importance of people’s everyday lives in relation to policies on public health, food and sustainability. The text demonstrates the corrosive impact of social inequality, and the futility of identifying lower income consumers as flawed when aiming for food policies that seek to achieve improvements in public health. Factors such as technological developments, ecological concerns and international trade are also taken in to account. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Public Health.

Book Food for War

  • Author : Alan F. Wilt
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2001-09-20
  • ISBN : 0191543349

Download or read book Food for War written by Alan F. Wilt and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-09-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food for War is a ground-breaking study of Britain's food and agricultural preparations in the 1930s as the nation once again made ready for war. Historians writing about 1930s Britain have usually focused on the Depression, appeasement, or political, military, and industrial concerns. None have dealt adequately with another significant topic, food and agriculture, as the nation moved, albeit reluctantly, from peace to war. In this new account Alan F. Wilt makes right this omission by examining in depth the relationship between food, agriculture, and the nation's preparations for war. He reveals how food and agriculture became closely linked to rearmament as early as 1936; that the government's preparations in this sector, as contrasted with other areas of the economy, were relatively well-developed when war broke out in 1936; and that rural and farm interests well understood the effect that war would have on their way of life. He argues that food and agriculture need to be integrated into the more general historical discourse, for what happened in Britain in the 1930s not only set the stage for World War II, but also contributed to a more robust agriculture in the decades that followed.

Download or read book Holiday Hunger in the UK written by Michael A. Long and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and much-needed book focuses on the phenomenon often referred to as "holiday hunger" in the United Kingdom. The book begins by outlining the history and scope of holiday hunger – the condition that occurs when a child’s household is, or will become, food insecure during the summer holidays. The decline of the UK welfare state and the rise of neoliberalism have created a situation where up to three million children in the UK face food insecurity during the summer months when there are extra financial pressures on the working poor and when free school meals are not available. This book details the level of childhood and household food insecurity in the UK and describes one of the main responses to holiday hunger – holiday clubs. These clubs are locally organised and funded and provide a place for children to go to eat nutritious meals for free during the school holidays. Highlighting the benefits of holiday clubs that often extend beyond food provision, this book also discusses the challenges that they face now and in the future. The book concludes with recommendations for food insecurity policy and the role of government in fighting holiday hunger. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of food and nutrition security, social policy and public health.
