The destruction of the environment alongside the creation of absorptive aerosols leads to long-lasting global cooling and environmental damage. Crops and traditional agriculture are affected due to the loss of sunlight and change in precipitation and temperature; analyzing important crops that are at risk may provide the first step in climate change mitigation. Rice is a staple crop cultivated globally and can serve as a beneficial model to study the dire effects of a nuclear strike on traditional agriculture. Genomic offset, a marker for predicted maladaptation, can be used to determine broad risk trends. A post-nuclear environment experiences the worst offset in the second year post strike with many scenarios alleviating in the eighth year; however, the worst case scenario, a 150 teragrams (Tg) soot-release US-Russia conflict, would result in decadal cooling and more intense environmental complications. Rice landraces across certain higher latitudinal thresholds would experience the worst conditions in terms of offset. Efforts to combat potential nuclear and climatic shifts can include the utilization of backup varieties, crop relocation, and genetic engineering.

It presents mechanisms for global-scale conversion including: natural gas-digesting bacteria, extracting food from leaves, and conversion of fiber by enzymes, mushroom or bacteria growth, or a two-step process involving partial decomposition of fiber by fungi and/or bacteria and feeding them to animals such as beetles, ruminants (cows, deer, etc), rats and chickens. Book excerpt: Armed conflict combined with prolonged drought has put about 20 million people at risk of starvation and death in Somalia, South Sudan, Yemen, and northern Nigeria. The international development and aid communities are caught between the enormity of the humanitarian crisis, which demands an estimated US$4.4 billion to address, and the lack of resources forthcoming from donors. Food crises, famine-like conditions, and famines recur with regularity in many developing countries (see Box 1 for definitions of terms). Although the current famines can be largely attributed to conflicts, chronic food insecurity also threatens several other African countries. For example, 6.7 million people were affected by Malawi’s largest food crisis in decades in 2016–2017, and the country remains vulnerable to weather extremes that could create food emergencies (World Bank 2017). In Kenya, food security has deteriorated since the end of 2016 and half of its 47 counties face food shortages (Chatterjee and Mengistu 2017). How do countries prepare to prevent shocks—natural and man-made—from generating food crises? What does it take to break the cycle of chronic food insecurity and build resilient food systems? How have some countries managed to prevent drought from leading to famine? In this brief, we document lessons for building resilient food systems to prevent future famines.

Decades of misguided aid, trade and production policies have resulted in an unprecedented erosion of agrobiodiversity that renders the world's food supply vulnerable to catastrophic crop failure in the event of drought, heavy rains, and outbreaks of pests and disease. Climate change threatens to wreak additional havoc on food production by increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, depressing agricultural yields, reducing the productivity of the world's fisheries, and placing pressure on scarce water resources. Furthermore, the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis are occurring at a time of rising global food insecurity. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports that the number of chronically undernourished people in the world reached a peak of 1.02 billion people in 2009 - a figure that represents one sixth of humanity. This article examines the underlying causes of the crises in the global food system, and recommends specific measures that might be adopted to address the distinct but related problems of food insecurity, loss of agrobiodiversity, and climate change. The article concludes that the root cause of the crises confronting the global food system is corporate domination of the food supply and the systemic destruction of local food systems that are healthy, ecologically sustainable, and socially just. The article argues that small-scale sustainable agriculture has the potential to address the interrelated climate, food, and agrobiodiversity crises, and suggests specific measures that the international community might take through law and regulation to promote the transition to a more just, resilient, and sustainable food system.
