Download or read book Food of Bluefish Pomatomus Saltatrix from the U S South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico written by Steven P. Naughton and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomachs of 4,841 bluefish were collected from five areas in the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. south Atlantic. Bluefish were primarily piscivorous with Sciaenidae, Clupeidae, Carangidae, and Mugilidae as important components among food fish. Bluefish most frequently consumed species that were normally schooling coastal pelagic fish and supplemented this diet with shrimp, squid, and crabs. Stomach contents varied by area, size of predator, and season of capture. local abundance and availability of prey items seemed to be the controlling factor in prey secection.

Book Species Profile of Round Scad Decapterus Punctatus Cuvier 1829

Download or read book Species Profile of Round Scad Decapterus Punctatus Cuvier 1829 written by Steven P. Naughton and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Members of the genus Decapterus usually occur in schools and are distributed throughout the world in tropical and subtropical waters. Decapterus is found generally in inshore waters, although larvae and young may occur in oceanic waters (Berry 1968). Fishes of this genus are important both for human consumption and for bait. In the Philippines, the round scad (Decaplerus spp.) is the largest commercial fishery, reaching over 100,000 tons per year (Ronquillo 1970). The increasing demand for protein for humans has put additional pressure on fish species not formerly exploited to the fullest. This species profile will attempt to bring together information on aspects of Decapterus pmctatus so future management and research plans can be developed. Emphasis will be centered on the species in the Gulf of Mexico"--Introduction

Download or read book A Bibliography of NOAA Technical Memoranda Issued by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries 1972 1993 written by Harriet M. Corvino and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) is one of five regional fishery research centers of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). In 1970, the NMFS was organized as a component of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fisheries Science Centers provide scientific information required for decisions relating to the conservation and management of fishery resources, and the protection of fishery habitats, endangered and threatened species. In 1972, the NOAA Technical Memorandum series was established and the Southeast Fisheries Science Center began the publication of research reports. The purpose of this series is timely dissemination of the results of scientific research. The series also affords the SEFSC a means of publishing research results in greater depth and detail than is normally allowed by scientific journals, which usually have stringent length restrictions. To address the difficulties of identification and location of these publications, we present the following listing of SEFSC Technical Memoranda from number 1 (1972) to number 340 (1993). They are available from their originating laboratories or from the National Technical Information Service. A directory of these sources is provided on page 2"--Introduction

Book excerpt: An authoritative guide to the identification, systematics, distribution, and biology of the thirty-eight species of the Order Beloniformes in the western North Atlantic Ocean The final volume in the Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series covers the Beloniformes, a diverse order of fishes containing six families and at least two hundred and thirty extant species found worldwide in marine and freshwater environments. This excellently illustrated, authoritative book describes the thirty-eight species of beloniform fishes—needlefishes, sauries, halfbeaks, and flyingfishes—that live in the western Atlantic Ocean. Compiled from new revisions, original research, and critical reviews of existing information, this tenth book in the series completes a major reference work in taxonomy and ichthyology for both amateurs and professionals, and all students of the sea.
