Book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018

Download or read book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.

Book Agriculture Natural Resources and Food Security

Download or read book Agriculture Natural Resources and Food Security written by Jagadish Timsina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how a former net food exporting Nepal has become a net food importing country due to a lack of an integrated system-wide approach to planning and governance of agriculture and natural resources. It demonstrates how various components of the food system, such as agronomy, agrobiodiversity, plant health, post-harvest management, livestock and fisheries, and socio-economics including marketing and trade, have been managed in sectoral silos, crippling the very foundations of food systems innovations. The book also explores ways to tackle climate change impacts while considering gender, social equity, conservation agriculture practices, and crop modeling as cross-cutting themes. This book utilizes Nepal as a case study in relation to wider questions of food security and livelihoods facing South Asia and synthesizes lessons that are relevant to the Global South where countries are struggling to harmonize and integrate natural resources management for sustainable and effective food security outcomes. As such, it significantly contributes to the knowledge toward achieving various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Book The Human Right to Food in Nepal

Book excerpt: The purpose of the seminar was to disseminate the FFM's preliminary findings and to debate the use of the human rights framework for addressing hunger in Nepal. [...] In 2004, the FAO adopted the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security.3 The FAO Voluntary Guidelines offer a practical tool to assist states as they develop programs and policies designed to implement their right to food commitments pursuant to the ICESCR. [...] Only 30% of the rural population has access to all-weather roads and the poor condition of the road network ham- pers the service delivery, particularly in the remote hill and mountainous districts of the country. [...] LEGAL FRAMEWORK International Human Rights Commitments Nepal has ratified major international human rights treaties including the ICCPR, ICESCR, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimi- nation against Women, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination. [...] Positive Steps by the State Although the Government of Nepal is in political transition and lacks the capacity to fully implement programs and policies, the FFM welcomed the many positive steps taken by the state to improve implementation of its right to food obligations.

This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the risks of climate change to development in Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and South Asia. Building on the 2012 report, Turn Down the Heat: Why a 4°C Warmer World Must be Avoided, this new scientific analysis examines the likely impacts of present day, 2°C and 4°C warming on agricultural production, water resources, and coastal vulnerability. It finds many significant climate and development impacts are already being felt in some regions, and that as warming increases from present day (0.8°C) to 2°C and 4°C, multiple threats of increasing extreme heat waves, sea-level rise, more severe storms, droughts and floods are expected to have further severe negative implications for the poorest and most vulnerable. The report finds that agricultural yields will be affected across the three regions, with repercussions for food security, economic growth, and poverty reduction. In addition, urban areas have been identified as new clusters of vulnerability with urban dwellers, particularly the urban poor, facing significant vulnerability to climate change. In Sub-Saharan Africa, under 3°C global warming, savannas are projected to decrease from their current levels to approximately one-seventh of total land area and threaten pastoral livelihoods. Under 4°C warming, total hyper-arid and arid areas are projected to expand by 10 percent. In South East Asia, under 2°C warming, heat extremes that are virtually absent today would cover nearly 60-70 percent of total land area in northern-hemisphere summer, adversely impacting ecosystems. Under 4°C warming, rural populations would face mounting pressures from sea-level rise, increased tropical cyclone intensity, storm surges, saltwater intrusions, and loss of marine ecosystem services. In South Asia, the potential sudden onset of disturbances to the monsoon system and rising peak temperatures would put water and food resources at severe risk. Well before 2°C warming occurs, substantial reductions in the frequency of low snow years is projected to cause substantial reductions in dry season flow, threatening agriculture. Many of the worst climate impacts could still be avoided by holding warming below 2°C, but the window for action is closing rapidly. Urgent action is also needed to build resilience to a rapidly warming world that will pose significant risks to agriculture, water resources, coastal infrastructure, and human health.

Book Understanding the Nature of Urban Food Insecurity in Nepal and the Prospective Role of US Foreign Aid

Download or read book Understanding the Nature of Urban Food Insecurity in Nepal and the Prospective Role of US Foreign Aid written by Saloni Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more than half of the world's population resides in urban areas. This has profound implications on all aspects of life, including food security. Food security issues are especially concerning in Asia, where at least half of all food is consumed in cities, and urbanization is shifting poverty from rural to urban areas. This dissertation investigates the nature of urban food insecurity in one of the fastest urbanizing nations in South Asia- Nepal. Current food security research and policies of Nepal are completely rural-centric, leaving a significant gap in the literature and existing policies. This gap exists not only at the domestic level but also in foreign assistance from donor agencies and foreign governments. This includes the United States and the United Nations, which have primarily focused on rural regions, leaving urban areas an unexplored territory for food assistance intervention, albeit increasing urban food insecurity. Therefore, this study addresses two significant gaps in the literature and policy. First, it investigates urban food insecurity in Nepal in its most densely populated region- Kathmandu Valley. Second, it explores the potential role of US foreign assistance in mitigating urban food insecurity in Nepal. Several global food security programs have attempted to tackle hunger through international aid and domestic policies for decades. This research explores US foreign aid as a potential resource for addressing hunger and food insecurity in urban areas of the global South. Using the Rights-Based theory, it frames food as a fundamental human rights issue and expands the theoretical framework of the Right to Adequate Food by including the role of governance. The findings of the dissertation project reflect the unique and urgent nature of urban food insecurity and outline key actors in the governance of urban food systems that have the potential to serve as development partners in US food assistance to Nepal. Ultimately, the dissertation sets the foundation for donors, academics, and the Nepal government to expand their food security research and intervention programs in urban areas of the global South.
