Book excerpt: Following the Sedan tests of July 6,1962, in Nevada, the applicability of mathematical models to food-chain transfers of iodine-131 in natural environments was examined. The amounts of radioiodine measured in the thyroids of jack rabbits collected at 5-day intervals between July 5 and August 5 were compared to levels predicted by models on the basis of estimated levels of radioiodine on vegetation as of July 6. Four areas, from 20 to 110 miles from ground zero, were studied between 5 and 30 days after the test. The basic model was deterministic, but a probabilistic model predicated on the same assumptions was also developed and tested.
