Book Food and Dietetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Food and Dietetics Classic Reprint written by Alice Norton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food and Dietetics The problems of the household are more difficult to-day than they have ever been, for each advance in science, each modern invention, has brought in its train new responsibilities and new duties. In every department of the administration of the home more knowledge and skill are required than ever before. With the increase of conveniences has come increased care. Standards of living have changed as well, and greater perfection in all household service is demanded of the home-maker. We still carry on in the household many of the numerous trades that were formerly a part of the home life, as cooking, cleaning, laundry work, sewing. At the same time more close supervision of the life of the children, mental, moral and physical, is required; more knowledge is needed to control materials if we would have that power over our environment which makes us the masters and not the slaves of our belongings; and the social demands upon time and strength can not be ignored. If to-day we would lead "the simple life," it must be as a result of determined effort, often in the face of more or less conscious opposition on the part of relatives and friends and of society in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food and the Principles of Dietetics The contents of this book were first addressed to the students of the London Hospital in the form of a course of lectures about a year and a half ago. The very gratifying reception accorded to these lectures and the almost total neglect of the subject of dietetics in ordinary medical education have induced the author to publish them in their present form. While the book has been specially designed to meet the require ments of students and practitioners of medicine, it is hoped that it may also prove intelligible and interesting to anyone desiring to acquire some knowledge of foods and the difficult problems, of nutrition. Book Dietetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dietetics Classic Reprint written by Alexander Bryce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dietetics IT is open to serious doubt whether the progress made in the study of dietetics has been of such a sweeping character as to warrant its inclusion in the category of the sciences. There are, however, many indications that it has advanced beyond the stage of a simple accumu lation of facts and experiences, and is preparing to take its place as a subject amenable to law. This short treatise does not pretend to be more than a fairly careful resume of the principles underlying the important question of nutrition, although I have endea voured to impart a personal character to the book by taking every opportunity of expressing my own views on all the important points. I am hopeful that it may serve as a guide of more than ephemeral interest and value, not only to those who desire no further acquaint ance with the subject, but to those who wish to pursue the fascinating study among the larger text-books. Book Diet in Health and Disease Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diet in Health and Disease Classic Reprint written by Julius Friedenwald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diet in Health and Disease The continued appreciation of the profession as evidenced by their using this book has added greatly to the endeavor to make the fifth edition of more value than the preceding ones. There are scarcely any subjects in medicine that have received the same amount of attention of recent years as dietetics and the study of nutrition. The literature is voluminous and it would neither be possible nor profitable to try to include everything that has been brought forward. There are many differences of opinion among authorities on many questions which can only be settled by future study and in many cases the views expressed are diametrically op posed. Much of our knowledge on nutrition is fragmentary and the exact value of many contributions cannot be estimated until further investigations have been made. Dietetics has always been a sub jcet much influenced by fads and fancies and much of the literature has little value in consequence. The authors have endeavored to give fully the various facts relat ing to the composition of foods, to indicate as far as possible in the space of one volume the scientific basis, when there is any for the various diets and. To give at the same time practical directions and diet lists which can be used without extensive training. Book Practical Observations Upon the Chemistry of Food and Dietetics Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations Upon the Chemistry of Food and Dietetics There has probably never been a time when the attention of the public has been more generally di rected toward the care of the health than the present. Every newspaper in the land seems to have a column or a corner devoted to the development of the body, to the care of the skin, to the obliteration of wrinkles, to the attainment of beauty, or to some phase of the care of the body. Magazines devoted to physical culture, to diet, to vegetarianism, etc., are widely circulated and read; there are books devoted to the thesis that fruit acids are deleterious and poisonous, and other books to prove that they are__ indispensable. Pseudo-scientific articles attempting to show that potatoes produce large abdomens, that tea causes the teeth to protrude, that carbohydrates have the effect of overdeveloping the chin, that onions relax the jaw tissues, and a host of like absurdities, have appeared in popular maga zines. Books have been written which try to prove that all our ills come from uric acid foods, and many essays and pamphlets to show that that proposition was not true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dietetics or Food in Health and Disease The potato originated in Chili, and its cultivation In North America and Europe began after the discovery of America by Columbus. The garden pea was brought into Greece and Italy by the Aryans from Asia. Beans were also first cultivated by the Aryans, and introduced by them into Europe; but the haricot, frijole, and Lima beans originated in South America. The cultiva tion of lentils in Egypt and Chaldea was begun before all history, but they grew wild in Greece and Italy before they were cultivated there. Many of our vegetables grew wild in Europe long before they were cultivated. The cauliflower was known to the Greeks and Romans. The cabbage was cultivated before' the Aryan invasion. Spinach was cultivated by the Medes and Persians; it was common at Nineveh and Babylon. The cultivation of onions appears to have originated in India, but they were known to the ancient Egyptians, and probably came from India through Egypt to Greece. The cultivation of fruit is probably not so ancient as that of the cereals}; Grapes grew wild in Southern Europe, but their cultiva tion was introduced by the Phoenicians. Records of wine-making go back to years. Apples and pears grew wild in Britain, but their cultivation was introduced by the Romans. The sweet orange came from China, where its cultivation is prehistoric; the citron from Western Asia, where it was cultivated by the Medes. The lemon was brought into Europe from the gardens of Egypt and Palestine. Pineapples first came from South America; bananas from Southern Asia, where they were found at the time of Alexander's expedition; but it is probable that they were first cultivated in the Malay Archipelago.
