Download or read book Unlocking the potential of protected agriculture in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council Saving water and improving nutrition written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a political and economic union of Arab states, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the Unites Arab Emirates. The GCC was formed in 1981 to strengthen the members’ economic, social and political ties by harmonizing regulations in various fields including economy, finance, trade and customs. The region extends over a territory of 2 673 108 km2 and is home to about 50 million people. The common denominators of the GCC countries are limited natural fertile land, scarce water resources and harsh climate. Depending on the country, the agriculture sector may use as much as 75 percent of the national available water resources. This has enormous environmental costs and significantly affects the sustainability of overall development in the Arabian Peninsula.According to Al-Rashed and Sherif (2000), the lack of renewable water resources is one of the critical constraints to sustainable development in the GCC countries. Rainfall in the Arabian Peninsula is scarce and infrequent. Over-exploitation of fossil groundwater resources, mostly to meet irrigation demands and create greenery lands, has already affected the productivity of aquifers, both quantitatively and qualitatively, despite the fact that much of the freshwater demand in the GCC countries is already covered using desalinated water. Reducing water consumption and increasing water efficiency are essential to enhancing agriculture and moving towards increased self-sufficiency with the production of high-quality, safe and diversified foods in the GCC countries. Exploiting the full potential of protected agriculture should save significant amounts of water, which can be used not only for agriculture but for other needs as well.

Download or read book Cisgenic Crops Potential and Prospects written by Anurag Chaurasia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-17 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first attempt for in-depth compilation of current knowledge on cisgenic crops and their potential prospects as a sustainable substitute for the controversial genetically modified crops. Innovative methodologies for the development of cisgenic crops for disease resistance, improved nutritional contents, suitability for organic farming, survival under climate change, and their role in conservation of plant genetic resources have been highlighted. Combined with molecular markers and genome editing, an advanced approach for crop improvement is reported. The book has 14 chapters authored by globally leading experts on the subject. This book is useful to the students, teachers, researchers and policy planners working across the disciplines of classical plant breeding up to the recent genetically modified and genome edited crops.

Download or read book The potential of agroecology to build climate resilient livelihoods and food systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study highlights the links between agroecology and climate change, by providing evidence on the technical (i.e. ecological and socio-economic) and policy potential of agroecology to build resilient food systems. The report aims to answer the following question: - How can agroecology foster climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience through practices and policies? Inspired by the idea that transformation will only happen through a coordinated approach among all levels, this study aims to combine evidence from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives.
Download or read book Eat Like a Fish written by Bren Smith and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER IACP Cookbook Award finalist In the face of apocalyptic climate change, a former fisherman shares a bold and hopeful new vision for saving the planet: farming the ocean. Here Bren Smith—pioneer of regenerative ocean agriculture—introduces the world to a groundbreaking solution to the global climate crisis. A genre-defining “climate memoir,” Eat Like a Fish interweaves Smith’s own life—from sailing the high seas aboard commercial fishing trawlers to developing new forms of ocean farming to surfing the frontiers of the food movement—with actionable food policy and practical advice on ocean farming. Written with the humor and swagger of a fisherman telling a late-night tale, it is a powerful story of environmental renewal, and a must-read guide to saving our oceans, feeding the world, and—by creating new jobs up and down the coasts—putting working class Americans back to work.
Download or read book The Theory Practice and Potential of Regional Development written by Kelly Vodden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian regional development today involves multiple actors operating within nested scales from local to national and even international levels. Recent approaches to making sense of this complexity have drawn on concepts such as multi-level governance, relational assets, integration, innovation, and learning regions. These new regionalist concepts have become increasingly global in their formation and application, yet there has been little critical analysis of Canadian regional development policies and programs or the theories and concepts upon which many contemporary regional development strategies are implicitly based. This volume offers the results of five years of cutting-edge empirical and theoretical analysis of changes in Canadian regional development and the potential of new approaches for improving the well-being of Canadian communities and regions, with an emphasis on rural regions. It situates the Canadian approach within comparative experiences and debates, offering the opportunity for broader lessons to be learnt. This book will be of interest to policy-makers and practitioners across Canada, and in other jurisdictions where lessons from the Canadian experience may be applicable. At the same time, the volume contributes to and updates regional development theories and concepts that are taught in our universities and colleges, and upon which future research and analysis will build.
Download or read book Design and politics written by Henk Ovink and published by 010 Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In establishing a professorship in Design & Politics at Delft University of Technology, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment has launched a program of education, research and practice for the spatial design of the Netherlands, aimed at reinforcing the interaction between design and politics. The purpose of this book is to offer inspiration and an organizing framework for that program, based on history, reflection, policy and, just as importantly, ambition. The book traces the history of the Netherlands' thinkers, makers and builders. It provides an understanding of how the roles and relationships in Dutch spatial planning have been transformed, and of the ideals, systems and processes that have been strengthened through confrontation. And it reflects on the situation today. Through excerpts from conversations with designers, officials, decision-makers, researchers and other experts, the editors seek to demonstrate the array of narratives in the Netherlands and abroad. Challenges in Dutch politics and design, whether minor or major, reflect these narratives and the confrontation between them. Such confrontation is essential, not just to foster thoughtful deliberation but also to uncover alternatives, eventualities and potentials.

Download or read book U S Agriculture s Potential to Supply World Food Markets written by Clark Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Domestic markets are growing too slowly to absorb increases in U.S. farm production. But reliance on foreign markets can make farmers vulnerable to sudden swings in prices, which are transmitted to other domestic sectors as well. This report assesses U.S. agriculture's capacity to meet domestic and export demands, and the likely consequences of doing so, under different economic assumptions about the future. By shifting production among regions, adopting new technology, and keeping up the quality of its resources, U.S. agriculture could double its exports within the next 30 years.
