Download or read book The Maze of Fantasy in Tamil Folktales written by Gabriella Eichinger Ferro-Luzzi and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book pursues an ethnographic and a theoretical purpose. The ethnographic first part examines how Tamil folktales, mostly gathered and published by Tamil authors, reflect Tamil culture. However, since the narrators want to amuse their listeners and arouse their interest they tend to exaggerate or invert the normal situation. Therefore, their tales reflect more reliably Tamil values, beliefs and interest than social behaviour. The second theoretical part stresses the importance of the actually occuring motifs and casts doubt on typology. Rather than artificially distinguishing tale types, often thought to exist independent of the narrators, it points out a network of thematic connections among Tamil folktales.

Book excerpt: Folklore Studies in India: Critical Regional Responses is an interesting compilation of twenty-eight critical articles on the beginning of folklore studies in the different parts of India. In the absence of a book that could map the history of Indian folklore studies single-handedly, this book can be deemed as the first-of-its-kind to feature the historical development of folklore studies in the different states of India. This book succinctly introduces the readers to the folk culture, folk arts, and folk genres of a particular region and to the different aspects of folkloristic researches carried out in that region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw! Romantic! Rough! – this is a collection of folktales from India. Sparrows and swallows, foxes and dogs, farmers and potters, kings and idiots populate these stories and tell you short and sharp stories of their lives. The pages of this book echo their sorrows, angers, gains and losses, and more importantly their laughters and love affairs. These stories showcase life in its naked form highlighting fanning and farting with equal frankness, and become the Bedtime Stories for Grown-ups. Presenting a collection of twenty-five short and very short stories, the book humorously answers some of the important questions like “What did the farmer’s wife do to make her husband active?” “Where did the he sparrow go all night, leaving the she sparrow and the chicks alone in the nest?” “Did the beggar get the chicken stew?” “Who did actually sleep with the potter?” “How did the man shut his loudmouth wife up?” “How did Half Nose become No Nose?” and many more intellectual musings concerning human survival. Written in a simple language, straightforward style, and matter-of-fact tone, these stories are expected to bring many a smile to your face, numerous sniggers, sometimes a couple of tears to your eyes (if you are a soft sort), but whatever they bring or not bring, it is certain that they will give you the pleasure of reading romantic stories at bedtime.
