Download or read book Heritage Keywords written by Kathryn Lafrenz Samuels and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the intersection of scholarship and practice, Heritage Keywords positions cultural heritage as a transformative tool for social change. This volume unlocks the persuasive power of cultural heritage—as it shapes experiences of change and crafts present and future possibilities from historic conditions—by offering new ways forward for cultivating positive change and social justice in contemporary social debates and struggles. It draws inspiration from deliberative democratic practice, with its focus on rhetoric and redescription, to complement participatory turns in recent heritage work. Through attention to the rhetorical edge of cultural heritage, contributors to this volume offer innovative reworkings of critical heritage categories. Each of the fifteen chapters examines a key term from the field of heritage practice—authenticity, civil society, cultural diversity, cultural property, democratization, difficult heritage, discourse, equity, intangible heritage, memory, natural heritage, place, risk, rights, and sustainability—to showcase the creative potential of cultural heritage as it becomes mobilized within a wide array of social, political, economic, and moral contexts. This highly readable collection will be of interest to students, scholars, and professionals in heritage studies, cultural resource management, public archaeology, historic preservation, and related cultural policy fields. Download or read book Cantos de adolescencia written by Am?rico Paredes and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stop, Time, your fast race; /turn back to my lost infancy." With the final poem of this collection, "Upon Turning Twenty One," famed Chicano folklorist Americo Paredes closes a chapter in his life--one written during his formative years from 1932 to 1937--as he grew from a seventeen-year-old boy to a twenty-one year old man. In doing so, the renowned writer looks "toward the unknown future maze." Originally published in 1937 by Libreria Espanola in San Antonio, Texas, this new edition contains the first-ever English translations of the original Spanish poems and an introduction by the translators, scholars and poets in their own right, B. V. Olguin and Omar Vasquez Barbosa. Paredes, who died in 1999 at the age of 84, is widely considered to have been at the forefront of the movement that saw the birth of Chicana/o literary and cultural studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s and 1980s. This collection of poetry written during his teenage years lays the groundwork for themes he explored in later writings: culture conflict, race, and gender relations, materialism, hybridity, and transnationalism. In his youthful, first-person voice, Paredes explores intimate, angst-filled issues relevant to all young people, such as love, memory, and rebellion. Published as part of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project Series, this vital volume is a must read for Paredes scholars and those interested in the dynamic intersection of cultures in the 1930s. It contains a literary chronology of Paredes' literary development and includes correspondence, photos, and other materials from the Americo Paredes Papers at the Archival Collections of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin AmericanCollection at the University of Texas at Austin.

This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Brzozowska-Krajka's Ethnoculture in the Diaspora: Between Regionalism and Americanisation is a pioneering monograph in Polish and American cultural studies. It deals with various aspects of the functioning of Polish immigrants' folk culture in the context of American multiculturalism. This monograph is based on its author's many years of research into the culture of Polish immigrants in the United States, mainly in the areas of metropolitan Chicago and on the East Coast. It defines the significance of the local (regional) cultures of the immigrants' country of origin for shaping their cultural identity under the conditions of diaspora. It indicates various degrees of identification with and distance from the source culture (of the country of origin). The monograph presents, interprets, and theorizes various forms of cultural expression of the Tatra highlander ethnic subgroup (Górals) within American Polonia, of the private and public face of its ethnicity. They include musical, song, and dance folklore, folk rituals (of the liturgical year, family rituals), folk art, folk costume, regional architecture, and ethno-marketing. Ethnoculture in the Diaspora is an essential work for the increasingly important field of folkloristic investigations of diasporic cultures that draw on the application of methods from the anthropology of culture and cultural studies. The study also has diagnostic value in the context of the explosion of ethnicity in the U.S. since the 1960s.
