But one black night of storm, they say, The brig gave way. The sailors perished, all save he - In pitching sea - Left clinging to a spar alone. Hold on! And then there came a mermaid gay To where he lay, And clasped him in her arms with glee. How lovely she! She bore him home, a treasure won, Her own! Her palace 'neath the ocean gray Was fair alway, Decked with bright garlands of the sea, The rolling sea. Great fish, her guards, hither and yon Swam on! Book Forty Four French Folk Songs and Variants from Canada Normandy and Brittany Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Four French Folk-Songs and Variants From Canada, Normandy, and Brittany The language that is spoken there is descended in a direct line from the language of Louis XIV, and Canada's repertory of popular songs is closely similar to what has been preserved by tradi tion and is still kept alive among the peasants on the other side of the ocean. One may even say that the Canadians are more deeply attached to ancient usages than are the French of to-day, and have more faithfully preserved the treasures of their folk-lore than have their brothers who remained at home. Download or read book Songs of Brittany Classic Reprint written by Theodore Botrel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Brittany If you ask the Breton minstrel whence he, the blacksmith's son and apprentice, derives his poetic gift, his extraordinary sense of all that is most beauti ful and fascinating in his native land and its folk-lore, he will tell you, without hesitation, it dates back to his early childhood, when he would listen spellbound hour by hour to the grandmother who loved to tell the boy the old, old tales as he sat by her knee 0' nights in the soft glow of the wood fire on the kitchen hearth. And none gripped him quite so closely as those stories of the mysterious sea, whose voice, now low and soothing, now loud and terrible, was ever in his cars. So to-day there are few writers either of prose or verse who know how to express as he expresses the manifold aspects of the ocean - the true inner meaning of the lives of those who go down to the sea in ships. These departments include the four ancient bishoprics of St, Pol de Leon, or the Leonnais, Cornouaille, Vannes, and Treguier, each of which was formerly, and is still in great measure, a district with distinct dress, usages, and local character, both in the landscape and the people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little-Folk Songs ET golden, dear ones, rises each fair head To manly stature in full height completed, Blue eyes glance bright 'neath brows where candor seated Holds fearless sway. With ever quickening tread, The incessant years my little babes have led Far from me, flinging Childhood's toys and flowers Away, while speeding with the absolute hours To lift life's iron gage. Hope strives with dread To see you stand forth men. Backward I turn Adown the path home - bound, content to find Your tiny foot-prints, tenderly to trace Remembrances, - haply o'er which to yearn In the still house, - wherewith these leaves are lined; Yours all the sweetness that may lend them grace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk-Songs for Schools This, we contend, is true in every particular, and national music may be said to be built up on folk melodies. Unhappily, with us the music of our race has been ignored, disparaged, and set aside; and our modern music is the outcome of the study of foreign models. \ive have been the very starlings of the musical world, acquiring the pipe and warble of strange birds, and forgetting our own wood-notes wild. In our primary and secondary schools no provision has been made for the teaching of folk-music to our children. They have been given tunes made in Germany, or composed for them by masters, English it may be, but speaking in another musical tongue from that of the people. Book Folk Songs from Sussex Classic Reprint

Download or read book Folk Songs from Sussex Classic Reprint written by George Butterworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Songs From Sussex These eleven songs are chosen from the collection which Mr. Francis Jekyll and I have been making during the last six years. At this time of day I suppose it is hardly necessary to state that the tunes are printed exactly as they were sung, without improvement of any sort. As regards the words, every collector knows that they almost always require a certain amount of editing. One reason for this is that the words as sung very frequently contain obvious errors and corruptions; perhaps a rhyming word has been forgotten and a non-rhyming one substituted. Such mistakes are easily rectified as a rule. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Song Book: A Complete Collection of the Folk-Songs, Carols, and Rounds, Suggested by the Board of Education (1905); Edited and Arranged for the Use of Schools This collection contains all the songs recommended for older children by the Board of Education in their Blue Book of Suggestions see Appendix VI., p. 131. The accompaniments are of the simplest character, and are merely intended to suggest sufficient harmony to make clear the tonality of each song, and in some cases to reinforce the characteristic rhythm, Without distracting the attention of the singers from the melody itself. English children may at first experience some difficulty in grasping the peculiar scales and intervals of Keltic tunes; but What Scotch, Welsh, and Irish children can sing naturally, English children can acquire, and the trouble involved will be amply repaid by the widening of their musical horizon, and by the more deeply poetical influence which Keltic music will exert upon the young mind. Book Folk Songs of England Vol 3

Download or read book Folk Songs of England Vol 3 written by Cecil James Sharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk-Songs of England, Vol. 3: Folk-Songs From Hampshire If, however, English folk-song is to be made popular, the words must be published in a singable form. Our guiding principle has been, therefore, to alter those phrases only to which objection might reasonably be made. No vocalist would sing words that are pointless, or ungrammatical. Nor could he, even if he would, sing accurately in dialect. Happily, however, dialect is not an essential of the folk-song. Every folk-singer uses his own native language, and consequently the words of the folk-song will be sung in as many different dialects as the districts in which each individual song is found. The words, therefore, of many of the songs in this collection have been altered. Gaps have been filled up, verses omitted or softened, rhymes reconciled, redundant syllables pruned, bad grammar and dialect translated into King's English. On the other hand, archaic words and expressions have, of course, been retained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book English Traditional Songs and Carols

Download or read book English Traditional Songs and Carols written by Lucy Etheldred Broadwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Traditional Songs and Carols: Collected and Edited, With Annotations and Pianoforte Accompaniments The strength of traditional melodies is indeed almost undeniable. Originally the perfectly sincere expression of some musical soul, they have passed on from father to son, receiving the impress of simple music-lovers unaccustomed to harmony, and therefore the more critically alive to the essentials of fine melody. It should not surprise us that the weakness of folk-song is most often apparent in its verse. A child will sing before it can speak. To compose a noble melody without harmony needs no teacher; whereas the invention of good poetry presupposes a varied vocabulary, a knowledge of grammar and the rules of rhyme and rhythm, and, above all, that habit of eloquence in daily speech and thought bred solely of familiarity with books. And books, even in their simplest form, were often unknown to the country dwellers through whom these old songs have descended. Book excerpt: In Victorian times, England was famously dubbed the land without music - but one of the great musical discoveries of the early twentieth century was that England had a vital heritage of folk song and music which was easily good enough to stand comparison with those of other parts of Britain and overseas. Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Percy Grainger, and a number of other enthusiasts gathered a huge harvest of songs and tunes which we can study and enjoy at our leisure. But after over a century of collection and discussion, publication and performance, there are still many things we don't know about traditional song - Where did the songs come from? Who sang them, where, when and why? What part did singing play in the lives of the communities in which the songs thrived? More importantly, have the pioneer collectors' restricted definitions and narrow focus hindered or helped our understanding? This is the first book for many years to investigate the wider social history of traditional song in England, and draws on a wide range of sources to answer these questions and many more.
