Book Chinese Folk Songs and Folk Singers

Download or read book Chinese Folk Songs and Folk Singers written by Antoinet Schimmelpenninck and published by Chime Foundation. This book was released on 1997 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to shan'ge, the most popular type of rural Chinese folk song, and to the master performers, the 'kings' and 'queens' of this genre. A major focus of this study is monothematism: the existence of 'one-tune' folk song areas, where singers perform the bulk of their lyrics to a single tune or to two or three closely related tune forms. Monothematism is examined here in relation to tune variation, processes of remembering, and mechanisms of oral transmission.

Book Dame Wang and Other Chinese Folk Songs

Download or read book Dame Wang and Other Chinese Folk Songs written by Keith Robinson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1872 George Carter Stent published five Chinese folk tunes with the melody and lyrics in an article called " Chinese Lyrics" . I think they are quite significant examples of a genre of Chinese folk song that is now less popular. With the help of Wang lingli 王玲利 we have translated the traditional Chinese into Simplified Chinese and provided fresh English translations. I have created new original piano accompaniments for each song. My aim is to try and make the melodies more accessible to western audiences and singers. The songs are published in Chinese with the pinyin above. In addition there is a complete version of the Chinese lyrics with tones and pinyin and an English translation to explain what each song is about. My dream is that one day I will go to a song recital and hear Chinese songs sung in Chinese, just as we listen to Schubert's lieder sung in German, or Faure songs sung in French, and it will seem completely normal.

Book Shan ge the Mountain Songs

Download or read book Shan ge the Mountain Songs written by Yasushi OKI and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain Songs is a collection of folk songs edited by the famous writer Feng Menglong (1574-1646). By this innovative work - mainly written in the Suzhou dialect - he aimed to revitalize poetry through the power of popular songs. This collection is very significant to the understanding of the characters of the mobile society of Jiangnan and the vitality of its intellectual world. The songs deal with the lives of common people: women, often prostitutes, boatmen, peasants, hunters, fishers and paddlers. Their spirit is far from the orthodox moral intents that Zhu Xi advocated for interpreting the Shijing, and their language is often vulgar and full of crude expressions or salacious double meanings and contains allusions to sexual and erotic behaviour.

Book The Columbia Anthology of Chinese Folk and Popular Literature

Download or read book The Columbia Anthology of Chinese Folk and Popular Literature written by Victor H. Mair and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Columbia Anthology of Chinese Folk and Popular Literature, two of the world's leading sinologists, Victor H. Mair and Mark Bender, capture the breadth of China's oral-based literary heritage. This collection presents works drawn from the large body of oral literature of many of China's recognized ethnic groups--including the Han, Yi, Miao, Tu, Daur, Tibetan, Uyghur, and Kazak--and the selections include a variety of genres. Chapters cover folk stories, songs, rituals, and drama, as well as epic traditions and professional storytelling, and feature both familiar and little-known texts, from the story of the woman warrior Hua Mulan to the love stories of urban storytellers in the Yangtze delta, the shaman rituals of the Manchu, and a trickster tale of the Daur people from the forests of the northeast. The Cannibal Grandmother of the Yi and other strange creatures and characters unsettle accepted notions of Chinese fable and literary form. Readers are introduced to antiphonal songs of the Zhuang and the Dong, who live among the fantastic limestone hills of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; work and matchmaking songs of the mountain-dwelling She of Fujian province; and saltwater songs of the Cantonese-speaking boat people of Hong Kong. The editors feature the Mongolian epic poems of Geser Khan and Jangar; the sad tale of the Qeo family girl, from the Tu people of Gansu and Qinghai provinces; and local plays known as "rice sprouts" from Hebei province. These fascinating juxtapositions invite comparisons among cultures, styles, and genres, and expert translations preserve the individual character of each thrillingly imaginative work.

Book Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China

Download or read book Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China written by Anne Birrell and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oral factor in Chinese literature, although critically important, has been largely neglected in the scholarship of the last generation. In this study, one of the leading specialists in classical Chinese literature introduces readers to a repertoire of seventy-seven songs and ballads of early imperial China. Each song-text is newly translated and fully annotated and explicated. Anne Birrell deals systematically with problems of the earliest sources, attribution, textual variants, meter, and structure. Her introductory essay provides a valuable sociohistorical context for this material. First published in 1988, this important study of the folk song has become standard reading for students of oral literature and Chinese folklore and popular culture.

This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings audiences the enchanting melodies passing down from generation to generation in the Zhuang community, which are on the brink of extinction. Specifically, it sheds light on the origin, evolution and artistic features of Zhuang folk song in the first place, and then it shifts to their English translation based on meta-functional equivalence, through which the multi-aesthetics of Zhuang folk song have been represented. At length, forty classic Zhuang folk songs have been selected, and each could be sung bilingually in line with the stave. This book benefits researchers and students who are interested in music translation as well as the Zhuang ethnic music, culture and literature. It also gives readers an insight into musicology, anthropology and intercultural study.
