Book European Folk Art in Europe and the Americas

Download or read book European Folk Art in Europe and the Americas written by Hans Jürgen Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overshadowed by the work of the great masters, folk art was for centuries neglected by collectors and museums, and scorned by connoisseurs. Indeed it only began to attract serious critical attention and public appreciation during the nineteenth century, while the spread of the Industrial Revolution was threatening it with extinction. Since then, though scholars have devoted much effort to the study of the subject on a national or regional basis, and have published the fruits of their researches in monographs and specialist journals, no major work of synthesis has appeared. The field is vast, for, if we include those American communities which are of European origin, it ranges (in area) from the Urals to the Catskills, and from Norway to Peru, and (in time) from the Middle Ages onwards. This rich and varied body of anonymous achievement in the arts and crafts has now been made the subject of an exhaustive coordinated study under the editorship of H J Hansen. The contributors are all specialists who are professionally concerned with the study and preservation of folk art, and have been drawn from many countries. In the text, the subject is treated country by country. In the illustrations, the artifacts are arranged by category: buildings, furniture, household utensils, ceramics, glass, costume, toys, woodcarving and painting-a uniquely comprehensive pictorial survey, made possible by the generosity of museums and private collectors all over Europe, who freely made their treasures available for the purpose. The last chapter, devoted to folk art on the market, is a valuable guide to the collector and dealer. Indispensable to the scholar, this book will also be a revelation to anyone who has hitherto regarded folk art as being inevitably quaint or primitive. It provides a remarkable record of the beauty and refinement of style which result from direct contact between the human creative impulse and the articles used in everyday life by ordinary people.

Book Dances of France I Brittany and Bourbonnais

Download or read book Dances of France I Brittany and Bourbonnais written by Claudie Marcel-Dubois and published by Noverre Press. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though France is, above all, the land of civilised sophistication, the old popular traditions still live on in the countryside. In their folk dances, as in their music and costume, the different regions present a rich variety. This book begins with the sea girt land of Brittany, where fifteen hundred years ago the men of Cornwall, fleeing before the Saxon invader, founded Cornouaille across the sea. Then it takes us to the Bourbonnais, in the little known heart of France, where langue d'oil and langue d'oc meet. The old dances are accompanied by traditional instruments, such as the Breton bombarde and biniou, and the vielle that is still made in the Bourbonnais by men who learned the craft from their fathers. The authors, both of whom hold high positions in the Paris Museum of Folk Art and Traditions, introduce us to their chosen regions with a general description of the regional costumes, dances and music; four selected dances are then more fully described, with step notations and music, and four plates in vivid colour showing the correct costumes.

Book excerpt: This sumptuous catalogue provides an overview of French art circa 1500, a dynamic, transitional period when the country, resurgent after the dislocations of the Hundred Years' War, invaded Italy and all media flourished. What followed was the emergence of a unique art: the fusion of the Italian Renaissance with northern European Gothic styles. Outstanding examples of exquisite and revolutionary works are featured, including paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, tapestries, and metalwork. Exciting new research brings to life court artists Jean Fouquet, Jean Bourdichon, Michel Colombe, Jean Poyer, and Jean Hey (The Master of Moulins), all of whose creations were used by kings and queens to assert power and prestige. Also detailed are the organization of workshops and the development of the influential art market in Paris and patronage in the Loire Valley.

Book Expressionism in Germany and France

Download or read book Expressionism in Germany and France written by Timothy O. Benson and published by Prestel Pub. This book was released on 2014 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking examination of the cultural exchange between early 20th century French and German artists illuminates new ways of understanding the development of Expressionism. Although the Expressionist movement is widely considered to have arisen out of a German aesthetic, it was actually as much a result of German artists' exposure to artists living and working in France, such as van Gogh, Seurat, Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Braque. In fact, in its early days, Expressionism was assigned no specific nationality at all. This fascinating book focuses on the key exhibitions, galleries, and museum directors that helped disseminate styles and techniques of revolutionary French artists throughout Germany. Included here are French masterpieces seen not only by German artists in Paris but also in important galleries, exhibitions, and private collections in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Weimar, and other cities. More than 100 paintings and works on paper are grouped to encourage an understanding of artistic influence and interchange. The volume also reflects new scholarship on issues of French-German relations and contributes to our understanding of the ways the visual arts are influenced by ideas of national identity and cultural heritage."
