Book Folk and Fairy Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Folk and Fairy Tales Classic Reprint written by Peter Christen Asbjornsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk and Fairy Tales To understand the inner worth of the tales, we should know, perhaps, something of their author's career. Education made him a zoologist, but nature stepped ih, and claimed him for a poet; he has dutifully stretched out a hand to the one fostermother and to the other. Peter Christen Asbjernsen was born at Christiania on the lgth of January, 1812. Of his life at school his biographers have told us nothing, and yet there must be something worth telling about it, for there, when a very little boy, he met a child still younger than himself, with whom he formed a close friendship that has lasted ever since, and has left strong traces on his intellectual development. This friend was the charming lyrical poet Jo'rgen Moe, now Bishop of Christianssand. Before they were twenty years of age these boys began to put down in writing the bogie-tales and old wives' fables which they had heard in the nursery, and as many more as the folks around them would' consent to recollect. Book Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint written by Herschel Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling anthology of folk and fairy tales brings together 54 stories, 9 critical articles, and 24 color illustrations from a range of historical and geographic traditions. This new edition includes a larger selection of critical articles (including pieces by J.R.R. Tolkien and Marina Warner), more modern and cross-cultural variations on classic tales (including stories by Neil Gaiman and Emma Donoghue), and an expanded selection of color illustrations.

Book English Fairy Tales Folklore and Legends Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Fairy Tales Folklore and Legends Classic Reprint written by Charles John Tibbits and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk and Fairy Tales From Many Lands The first adjective of our title also needs a similar exten sion of its meaning. I have acted on Moliere's principle, and have taken what was good wherever I could find it. Thus, a couple of these stories have been found among descendants of English immigrants in America; a couple of others I tell as I heard them myself in my youth in Australia. One of the best was taken down from the mouth of an English Gipsy. I have also included some stories that have only been found in Lowland Scotch. I have felt justified in doing this, as of the twenty-one folk tales contained in Chambers' Popular Rhymes of Scot land, no less than sixteen are also to be found in an English form. With the Folk-tale as with the Ballad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales

Download or read book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales written by Donald Haase Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-06-19 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first compilation of the full first-edition texts of the classic fairy tale collections by Joseph Jacobs, with Jacobs' original prefaces and annotations. In these two classic collections, first published in 1890 and 1894, Joseph Jacobs combined folklore, children's literature, and the eclectic scholarship of the Victorian era to create a storehouse of tales that inhabited the imaginations of children and adults for generations. Here readers first met Tom Tit Tot, Molly Whuppie, and Jack the Giant-Killer, and first read the stories of the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears, and Henny-Penny. Jacobs' daring collections challenged conventional thinking about the meaning of "folk," the individual artistry behind folktales, and the boundaries between folklore and literature, anticipating modern developments in folklore studies. His original editions of these 87 classic tales, along with the original illustrations, are reprinted in this new volume, offering readers an unsurpassed understanding of the development of the classic fairy tale in late Victorian England.

Book Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales Classic Reprint written by Joseph Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales In making my selection I have chiefly tried to make the stories characteristic. It would have been easy, especially from Kennedy, to have made up a volume entirely filled with Grimm's Goblins a la Celtique. But one can have too much even of that very good thing, and I have therefore avoided as far as possible the more familiar formula of folk-tale literature. To do this I had to withdraw from the English-speaking Pale both in Scotland and Ireland, and I laid down the rule to include only tales that have been taken down from Celtic peasants ignorant of English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales I have Englished these tales from the first Hun garian edition, so that this version is, perhaps, open to the objection of being atranslation of a translation. Inasmuch, however, as I have followed my text very closely, and having regard to the fact that Hungarian and Turkish are closely cognate dialects (in point of grammatical construction they are practically identical), I do not think they will be found to have lost so very much of their original fragrance and flavour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oak-Tree Fairy Book: Favorite Fairy Tales The first sixteen tales in this book have a special claim to the attention of American readers, for they were picked up in this country. Two or three of them are to be found in nearly all our fairy-tale collections, and it would not be safe to say that any of them originated here; yet there are none of the sixteen but that differ in an interesting way from the usual versions, and most of them are quite unfa miliar to the present generation. I am indebted for them to friends and correspondents and to the American 701mm! Of Folk Lore. Readers acquainted with similar tales not in the ordinary collections will confer a favor if they will communicate with me. Download or read book Fairy Tales and Other Stories Classic Reprint written by Hans Christian Andersen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales and Other Stories And the Shilling rattled and jumped for joy as it was thrust back into the purse. So here it lay among strange companions, who came and went, each making room for a successor but the Shilling from home always remained in the bag which was a distinction for it. Several weeks had gone by, and the Shilling had travelled far out into the world without exactly knowing where he was, though he learned from the other coins that they were French or Italian. One said they were in such and such a town, another that they had reached such and such a spot; but the Shilling could form no idea of all this. He who has his head in a bag sees nothing; and this was the case with the Shilling. But one day, as he lay there, he noticed that the purse was not shut, and so he crept forward to the opening, to take a look around. He ought not to have done so; but he was inquisitive, and people Often have to pay for that. He slipped out into the fob: and when the purse was taken out at night the Shilling remained behind, and was sent out into the passage with the clothes. There he fell upon the floor: no one heard it, no one saw it. Next morning the clothes were carried back into the room; the gentleman put them on, and continued his journey, while the Shilling remained behind. The coin was found, and was required to go into ser vice again, so he was sent out with three other coins. It is a pleasant thing to look about one in the world, thought the Shilling, and to get to know strange people and foreign customs. And now began the history of the Shilling, as told by himself.
