Book Foliar nutrient status of young red spruce and balsam fir in a fertilized stand

Download or read book Foliar nutrient status of young red spruce and balsam fir in a fertilized stand written by Miroslaw M. Czapowskyj and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Average dry weight and nutrient levels in current foliage from red spruce and balsam fir seedlings and saplings in the understory of a 25-year old aspen and birch stand were observed 3 years after N, P, and lime treatments were applied. Elemental concentrations were plotted as a function of needle weight and quantity of element per needle. This allows interpretation of treatment effect on overall nutrient levels for both concentration and quantity of each element in the foliage. In balsam fir, dry weight per needle was significantly increased by N fertilizer. Nitrogen also significantly affected levels of ash, N, P, K, Ca, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Na in balsam fir foliage. In red spruce, dry weight per needle, N, and Fe levels all responded to N fertilizer; P fertilizer affected P foliar concentration and lime significantly affected Mn levels. In both species there were significant interactions among the N, P, and lime treatments, indicating that response to one element varied according to the other elements added simultaneously. Balsam fir needles were heavier and contained higher levels of nutrients than red spruce needles. The magnitude of changes in elemental levels was generally greater for balsam fir than for red spruce.

Book Growth and Nutrient Status of Black Spruce Seedlings as Affected by Water Table Depth

Download or read book Growth and Nutrient Status of Black Spruce Seedlings as Affected by Water Table Depth written by Miroslaw M. Czapowskyj and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of soil water level on growth, biomass accretion, and inorganic element uptake by black spruce. One-year-old containerized seedlings were grown for 3 years at three water table depths. All trees survived for the duration of the study confirming that black spruce has a certain degree of survival tolerance to high water tables. However, tree height, diameter growth, and biomass production significantly increased as the depth to water table increased. The foliar levels of N, P, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, and B increased and those of Cu and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. For ash and Ca, differences were significant but did not follow a consistent trend. In shoots, the level of N, Ca, and Mg increased and those of ash, K, Fe, Cu, B, Al, and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. The level of P was not affected by the water table. In roots, the level of N and Ca increased and the level of ash, Mn, Fe, Al, and Cu decreased with increasing depth to the water table. The level of P, Mg, and Zn was significantly different but did not follow any trend. Foliar concentration of ash, Ca, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Al, and B increased and concentration of N, P, K, and Mg decreased with the increasing foliage age. In shoots, ash, Ca, Al, Fe, and Zn increased and N, P, K, Mg, and B decreased with the increasing tree and shoot age. In roots, Fe, Mn, Na, and Al increased and N, P, and Cu decreased with the increasing tree age.S3.

Book Ecophysiology of Coniferous Forests

Download or read book Ecophysiology of Coniferous Forests written by William K. Smith and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conifers--pine, fir, and spruce trees--are dominant species in forests around the world. This book focuses on the physiology of conifers and how these physiological systems operate. Special consideration is devoted to the means by which ecophysiological processes influence organismal function and distribution. Chapters focus on the genetics of conifers, their geographic distribution and the factors that influence this distribution, the impact of insect herbivory on ecophysiological parameters, the effects of air pollution, and the potential impact that global climatic changes will have upon conifers. Because of the growing realization that forests have a crucial role to play in global environmental health, this book will appeal to a developing union of ecologists, physiologists and more theoretically minded foresters.
