Book The Syntax of Information Structural Agreement

Download or read book The Syntax of Information Structural Agreement written by Johannes Mursell and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research monograph, Johannes Mursell discusses the syntactic impact of information-structural features on agreement. So far, the syntactic contribution of this type of feature has mostly been reduced to movement of topics or foci clause-initial position. Here, the author looks at a different phenomenon, syntactic agreement, and how this process can be dependent on information-structural properties. Based partly on original fieldwork from a typologically diverse set of languages, including Tagalog, Swahili, and Lavukaleve, it is argued that for most areas for which information-structural features have been discussed, it is possible to find cases where these features influence phi-feature agreement. The analysis is then extended to cases of Association with Focus, which does not involve phi-features but can still be accounted for with agreement of information-structural features. The book achieves two main goals: first it provides a uniform analysis for different constructions in unrelated languages. Second, it also gives a new argument that information-structural features should be treated as genuine syntactic features.

Book Pragmatics and Prosody in English Language Teaching

Download or read book Pragmatics and Prosody in English Language Teaching written by Jesús Romero-Trillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the elusive subject of English prosody—the stress, rhythm and intonation of the language—, and its relevance for English language teaching. Its sharp focus will be especially welcomed by teachers of English to non-native speakers, but also by scholars and researchers interested in Applied Linguistics. The book examines key issues in the development of prosody and delves into the role of intonation in the construction of meaning. The contributions tackle difficult areas of intonation for language learners, providing a theoretical analysis of each stumbling block as well as a practical explanation for teachers and teacher trainers. The numerous issues dealt with in the book include stress and rhythm; tone units and information structure; intonation and pragmatic meaning; tonicity and markedness, etc... The authors have deployed speech analysis software to illustrate their examples as well as to encourage readers to carry out their own computerized prosodic analyses.

Book The F Word

Download or read book The F Word written by David Paul Eich and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The 'F' Word: Good Words for Great Leaders, the leadership lexicon of freedom, focus, fidelity, fortitude, forbearance, forgiveness, and faith represent seven tenets for those who wish to inspire others. David Paul Eich shares what he learned from several "teachers," whose stories set the bar for those who strive to become outstanding leaders. Readers will meet the teenager whose freedom to smile in the face of death, gives new meaning to a positive attitude; an advertising director who taught the author how to focus on what is, and what is not, "a bad day"; a marketing executive whose unusual approach to fidelity inspired an entire sales force; a father whose "face the wind" philosophy represents an antidote for adversity; a crippled wife and mother that claims her life has been "perfect;" an unbelievable testimonial by a patient who personally gave three hundred health care executives the gift of forgiveness; and the Peace Corps volunteer, who found God in the smiles of two starving children. These role models join several others as they provide the lessons and principles necessary for good men and women to become great leaders.

Book The Production and Perception of Japanese Pitch Accent

Download or read book The Production and Perception of Japanese Pitch Accent written by Yukiko Sugiyama and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word prosody of Tokyo Japanese is often labeled as pitch accent, and is characterized by a steep fall in F0 from the accented mora into the following unaccented mora. The description of Japanese pitch accent in earlier research was primarily based on the observation of a small set of minimal pairs that differed only by pitch accent, and its bearing on the perception of pitch accent was not clear. This book attempts to overcome these limitations by conducting production and perception experiments using a larger set of minimal pairs. It first examines whether earlier descriptions of Japanese pitch accent hold generally true in Japanese by thoroughly searching minimal pairs in an electronic database. It then conducts a perception study to examine whether acoustic differences found between the minimal pairs are used by listeners in word identification. The results show that some acoustic properties related to pitch accent were not used in auditory identification, underscoring the need to look at both production and perception in studying speech. This volume also includes a short review on the literature of Japanese pitch accent. The book is ideal for those interested in the issues related to phonetics and the perception of accent and word prosody.

In fact, there are so many books, articles, websites, blogs, webinars, and conferences that many startups get paralyzed, or they focus on the wrong priorities and go broke before they succeed. The Art of the Start 2.0 solves that problem by distilling Guy Kawasaki's decades of experience as one of the most hardworking and irreverent strategists in the business world. Guy has totally overhauled this iconic, essential guide for anyone starting anything. It’s 64 percent longer than version 1.0 and features his latest insights and practical advice about social media, crowdfunding, cloud computing, and many other topics. Guy understands the seismic changes in business over the last decade: Once-invulnerable market leaders are struggling. Many of the basics of getting established have become easier, cheaper, and more democratic. Business plans are no longer necessary. Social media has replaced PR and advertising as the key method of promotion. Crowdfunding is now a viable alternative to investors. The cloud makes basic infrastructure affordable for almost any new venture. The Art of the Start 2.0 will show you how to effectively deploy all these new tools. And it will help you master the fundamental challenges that have not changed: building a strong team, creating an awesome product or service, and facing down your competition. As Guy likes to say, “Entrepreneur is a state of mind, not a job title.” His book will help you make your crazy ideas stick, through an adventure that's more art than science – the art of the start.

Book Reanalysis in Sentence Processing

Download or read book Reanalysis in Sentence Processing written by J. Fodor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-10-31 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic addressed in this volume lies within the study of sentence processing, which is one of the major divisions of psycholinguistics. The goal has been to understand the structure and functioning of the mental mechanisms involved in sentence comprehension. Most of the experimental and theoretical work during the last twenty or thirty years has focused on 'first-pass parsing', the process of assigning structure to a sentence as its words are encountered, one at a time, 'from left to right' . One important guiding idea has been to delineate the processing mechanisms by studying where they fai!. For this purpose we identify types of sentences which perceivers have trouble assigning structure to. An important class of perceptually difficult senten ces are those which contain temporary ambiguities. Since the parsing mechanism cannot tell what the intended structure is, it may make an incorrect guess. Then later on in the sentence, the structure assignment process breaks down, because the later words do not fit with the incorrect structural analysis. This is called a 'garden path' situation. When it occurs, the parsing mechanism must somehow correct itself, and find a different analysis which is compatible with the incoming words. This reanalysis process is the subject of the research reported here.
