Book 2048X2048 Visible Infrared HgCdTe Focal Plane Arrays FPAs

Download or read book 2048X2048 Visible Infrared HgCdTe Focal Plane Arrays FPAs written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rockwell has developed the world's largest multiplexer for use with infrared HgCdTe and visible silicon detector arrays. The resulting FPAs are to be proposed for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) program, ground-based astronomy, and other low background applications. The 2048x2048 multiplexer's unit cell size is 18 micrometers x 18 micrometers with source follower per detector input (SFD) and 4 and 32 output amplifier selections. SWIR detectors with a spectral response of 0.85 micrometers to 2.5 micrometers have been processed on liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) HgCdTe on sapphire substrates. MWIR detectors (0.85-5.0 micrometers) will be processed on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) HgCdTe on CdZnTe substrates. Response to wavelengths as low as 0.4 micrometer is possible with the substrate removal process and an example of this will be given. The multiplexer's has been designed and fabricated at Conexant (formerly Rockwell Semiconductor Systems). Room temperature probing shows that the device is functional with excellent yield 20%. Novel hybrid fabrication techniques have been used to construct the first engineering grade FPA, currently being tested. This HAWAII-2 device is based on the highly successful HAWAII 1024x1024 device and the performance will be similar.

Book Seeing Photons

Download or read book Seeing Photons written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense recently highlighted intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities as a top priority for U.S. warfighters. Contributions provided by ISR assets in the operational theaters in Iraq and Afghanistan have been widely documented in press reporting. While the United States continues to increase investments in ISR capabilities, other nations not friendly to the United States will continue to seek countermeasures to U.S. capabilities. The Technology Warning Division of the Defense Intelligence Agency's (DIA) Defense Warning Office (DWO) has the critical responsibility, in collaborations with other components of the intelligence community (IC), for providing U.S. policymakers insight into technological developments that may impact future U.S. warfighting capabilities. To this end, the IC requested that the National Research Council (NRC) investigate and report on key visible and infrared detector technologies, with potential military utility, that are likely to be developed in the next 10-15 years. This study is the eighth in a series sponsored by the DWO and executed under the auspices of the NRC TIGER (Technology Insight-Gauge, Evaluate, and Review) Standing Committee.

Book Infrared Astronomy with Arrays

Download or read book Infrared Astronomy with Arrays written by Ian S. McLean and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for another conference on the theme of Infrared Astronomy with Arrays actually goes back to March 1987. At a party held in my home at the end of the Hilo conference, excitement was running high and everyone present was in favor of another meeting. I recall suggesting to Al Fowler that the next meeting could be in Tucson. Despite Al's reply to the effect that Hawaii was a much nicer location, a meeting was held in Tucson three years later. That meeting focussed more on the astrophysics which had been accomplished with the detectors, rather than on techniques and methods. However, it was already apparent in February of 1990 that a new generation of larger m arrays would soon supersede the 64x64 class of devices and so, having just moved from the UK Infrared Telescope unit in Hawaii to join with Eric Becklin in his move to UCLA, it seemed to me that another Hilo-style conference was appropriate, and Eric agreed.

Book Operating Testing and Evaluating Hybridized Silicon P I N Arrays

Download or read book Operating Testing and Evaluating Hybridized Silicon P I N Arrays written by Andrew C. Moore and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Use of CCD detector arrays as visible imagers in space telescopes has been problematic. Charge-coupled devices rapidly deteriorate due to damage from the high radiation environment of space. CMOS-based imagers, which do not transfer charge, offer an alternative technology that is more tolerant of a high-radiation environment. This dissertation evaluates the performance of four 'pathfinder' 1K by 1K hybridized silicon P-I-N detector arrays made by Raytheon under subcontract to RIT as candidates for use in a space telescope application. Silicon P-I-N arrays have photon capture properties similar to back-thinned CCD's and should be far more robust than CCD's in the highradiation environment of space. The first two devices, 180 [micron] thick prototypes, demonstrate crisp imaging with lateral diffusion of 5 microns at 35 Kelvin. The nodal capacitance is estimated to be 41 fF and the quantum efficiency is remarkably good (typically> 0.75) over a spectral range from 410 to 940 nm. A second pair of devices, fabricated with detectors thinned to 40 [microns], exhibits similar performance but with blue-enhanced spectral response from an improved anti-reflective coating. Operating, testing, and evaluating imaging devices similar to the ones tested here is also problematic. Precise, low-noise, flexible control systems are required to operate the devices, and interpretation of the data is not always straightforward. In the process of evaluating these pathfinder devices, this dissertation surveys and advances systems engineering and analysis (i.e. the application of linear and stochastic system theory) generally useful for operating and evaluating similar hybridized "staring" focal plane arrays. Most significantly, a previously unaccounted for effect causing significant errors in the measurement of quantum efficiency - inter-pixel capacitive coupling - is discovered, described, measured, and compensated for in the P-I-N devices. This coupling is also shown to be measurably present in hybridized indium antimonide arrays. Simulations of interpixel coupling are also performed and predict the coupling actually observed in the P-I-N devices. Additional analysis tools for characterizing these devices are developed. An optimal estimator of signal on a multiply-sampled integrating detector in the presence of both photon and read noise is derived, modeling a pixel as a simple linear system, and is shown to agree with known limiting cases. Theories of charge diffusion in detectors are surveyed and a system model based on the steady state diffusion equation, infinite lifetime, and contiguous pixels is derived and compared to other models. Simulations validate this theory and show the effect of finite mean free path, finite lifetime, and non-contiguous pixels upon it. A simple method for modeling and evaluating MTF from edge spread is developed and used. A model that separately measures system and device noise in multichannel systems is developed, and shown to agree with measurements taken with the same device in both a quiet and a somewhat noisy system. Hardware and software systems that operate these devices are also surveyed, and 'agile' technologies and development methodologies apprate for detector research are employed to build a simple and flexible array control system, primarily from open-source components. The system is used to collect much of the experimental data"--Abstract.
