Book excerpt: Winged monsters have been seen in the skies, and a pestilence follows in their wake, threatening the very survival of mankind. Only the crew of the Blood Hunter knows where they come from, and only one man has the power to send them back—Thorne, a human/dragon hybrid in possession of mental powers beyond comprehension. Candace Decker doesn’t need anyone to look after her—she’s a badass werewolf more than capable of protecting herself and those she loves. All the same, she’s always been drawn to Thorne’s strength. In an uncertain world, he’s the one man who makes her feel safe. And what Candy wants, she usually gets. But while Candy is tenacious, Thorne’s willpower has been honed over ten thousand years. He might want her, but the last thing he needs is an infatuation with a young, impetuous werewolf. Candy makes him lose control, and that could have disastrous consequences. As the threat escalates and they become separated by time and space, Candy must find a way back to him, because while Thorne alone has the power to defeat the dragons, only together can they finally bring peace to the universe. Each book in the Dark Desires series is STANDALONE: * Break Out * Deadly Pursuit * Death Defying * Temporal Shift * Blood and Metal * Flying Through Fire

Book excerpt: ""Shit happens, and it doesn't mean it's somebody's fault. And in the test flight of an airplane, shit often happens."" - Bombardier Experimental Test Pilot Eric Fiore On October 10, 2000, a Challenger 604 experimental test aircraft crashed on takeoff at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport, dragging a wing, before turning into a fireball. Barely alive and suffering horrific burns, test pilot Eric Fiore was the only survivor hauled from the wreckage. He has asked his wife to promise him something. Based on actual events, "Flight through Fire" is an unforgettable love story centered on a deep devotion to aviation. Carol Fiore vividly describes the aftermath of the accident, the response of a billion dollar company and an entire Kansas town, the intense pressure placed on a hospital, the tragic realities of severe facial burns, the evolution of an eating disorder in her teenage daughter, and the raw emotional pain of her nonreligious family. Deftly interweaving the past and present, the author takes the reader on a wondrous adventure around the world with a complicated and passionate man who was born to be a pilot. Struggling with the horrors of his injuries, she confronts grief without religion, searching for strength in order to keep her promise to him. Insightful, brutally honest, and unexpectedly humorous, this is the story of what it takes to be a test pilot, and what it costs to love one.

Book Over Fields of Fire

Download or read book Over Fields of Fire written by Timofeeva-Egoro and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s the Soviet Union launched a major effort to create a modern Air Force. That process required training tens of thousands of pilots. Among those pilots were larger numbers of young women, training shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. A common training program of the day involved studying in ''flying clubs'' during leisure hours, first using gliders and then training planes. Following this, the best graduates could enter military schools to become professional combat pilots or flight navigators. The author of this book passed through all of those stages and had become an experienced training pilot when the USSR entered the war.Volunteering for frontline duty, the author flew 130 combat missions piloting the U2 biplane in a liaison squadron. In the initial period of the war, the German Luftwaffe dominated the sky. Daily combat sorties demanded bravery and skill from the pilots of the liaison squadron operating obsolete, unarmed planes. Over the course of a year the author was shot down by German fighters three times but kept flying nevertheless. In late 1942 Anna Egorova became the first female pilot to fly the famous Sturmovik (ground attack) plane that played a major role in the ground battles of the Eastern Front. Earning the respect of her fellow male pilots, the author became not just a mature combat pilot, but a commanding officer. Over the course of two years the author advanced from ordinary pilot to the executive officer of the Squadron, and then was appointed Regimental navigator, in the process flying approximately 270 combat missions over the southern sector of the Eastern Front initially (Taman, the Crimea) before switching to the 1st Belorussian Front, and seeing action over White Russia and Poland.Flying on a mission over Poland in 1944 the author was shot down over a target by German flak. Severely burned, she was taken prisoner. After surviving in a German POW camp for 5 months, she was liberated by Soviet troops. After experiencing numerous humiliations as an ''ex-POW'' in 1965 the author finally received a top military award, a long-delayed ''Golden Star'' with the honorary title of ''Hero of the Soviet Union''. This is a quite unique story of courage, determination and bravery in the face of tremendous personal adversity. The many obstacles Anna had to cross before she could fly first the Po-2, then the Sturmovik, are recounted in detail, including her tough work helping to build the Moscow Metro before the outbreak of war. Above all, Over Fields of Fire is a very human story - sometimes sad, sometimes angry, filled with hope, at other times with near-despair, abundant in comradeship and professionalism - and never less than a large dose of determination! ABOUT THE AUTHORAnna Alexandrovna Timofeeva-Egorova was born on 23 September 1916. After attending school she had hoped to learn to fly but this wish was delayed due to one of her brother''s becoming a victim of the Communist security system, which deemed him an ''enemy of the people''. After a number of setbacks Anna learned to fly, and during the first part of the Great Patriotic War flew Po-2 biplanes for the 130th Aviation Signals Squadron, being shot down three times. She then switched to flying the fearsome Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft with the 805th Ground Attack Regiment (805 ShAP), 197th Ground Attack Division. Anna flew approximately 270 combat missions before being shot down in the summer of 1944, being severely injured and taken prisoner by the Germans. Thanks to her determination, and the skill, dedication, care and kindness of numerous individuals, she made a remarkable recovery and was liberated when the Soviets overran her POW camp near Kstrin in 1945. However, her troubles were not over, as the Soviet authorities initially believed her to be a traitor and collaborator and subjected her to 11 days of continuous interrogations. She was released, although her injuries were such that was medically discharged from the Air Force in 1945. She continued to fight to clear her name after the war - she was eventually reinstated into the Communist Party and in 1965 finally received the award of ''Hero of the Soviet Union''. She died in October 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After sixty years, there is so much about the plane crash I vividly remember, as if it was yesterday, Gene said. With pen and pads of yellow-lined paper, he carefully writes about his life from his youth to present day. He may stop to ponder what he chooses to document, but he perseveres to record his memories with careful consideration. One memory leads to another, and faded details reemerge for Genes personal reflection. He may smile, maybe chuckle a time or two, or perhaps he may need to wipe the tears from his eyes in quiet contemplation. He may stop to rest his hand and look out of the window of his Florida home to glimpse the innocent birds and wind in the trees. Soon the pages become a powerful collection of priceless letters. These personal recollections come from a life filled with good and bad, adventure, and duty. He is humble and epitomizes the meaning of a survivor.

Book Never Wait for the Fire Truck

Download or read book Never Wait for the Fire Truck written by David Yeager Alexander and published by David Yeager Alexander. This book was released on 2015 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a survivors story of the worst aircraft accident in world history. On March 27,1977, two 747's collided on the ground in fog on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands. The staggering death toll was 544 upon impact with 74 initial survivors. The author was among a subgroup of 14 walking survivors and 1 of 2 photographers that Sunday afternoon. This is his story of survival, recovery and return to flight. Part 2 of the book provides details of improvements to aircraft interior safety. Many of those improvements were the result of an in-flight cabin fire on Air Canada flight 979 in 1983. Non-flammable materials for the interior and stronger seats make a hard landing more survivable. Part 3 of the book discusses runway safety, a very hot topic recently. New technology, ADSB, will greatly improve safety on the ground and replace radar. Controllers and pilots will know where every aircraft is on the ground and in the sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth account of the 1968 London air tragedy that claimed five lives—includes interviews with cabin crew, passengers, and air traffic controllers. One and a half minutes after takeoff on the clear and sunny afternoon of April 8, 1968, the Number 2 engine of BOAC Boeing 707 G-ARWE broke away from its mounting pylon and fell, tumbling in flames. Captain Cliff Taylor managed an extremely smooth touchdown about 400 yards beyond the Heathrow runway threshold and the aircraft came to a stop 1,400 yards further along the runway. The cabin crew had the doors open and passengers began escaping from the starboard over-wing exit and then via chutes at the forward and rear galley doors. Several explosions occurred and the port wing fell off, the resulting blast hurling flaming debris over the side of the aircraft. The rear escape chute was damaged by the fire and burst but, of the 126 people aboard, most of the 121 survivors had escaped before the arrival of the main fire and rescue services. Thirty-eight people received treatment for injuries and five, including stewardess Barbara Jane Harrison, were overcome by heat and fumes and died aboard G-ARWE. For her bravery in trying to rescue the remaining passengers on that day, Harrison was awarded the George Cross. “An amazing story . . . a fitting tribute to Jane and the other unfortunate people who lost their lives. It is extremely well written and I would highly recommend it.” —Jonathan Wright
