This book goes some way to describe what actually did happen. It is not about one story, but about many individual stories, threaded together to record and validate one person's recollection together with others, to give a true account of the incident in question, which caused death and injuries to its civilian residents; also the fate of its servicemen who died in battle throughout the world. Due to censorship, the taking of photographs was not permitted. However, during research for the book, a few did come to light, including German Reconnaissance photos identifying Torpoint as a target and American GIs leaving on 1st June 1944 bound for the D-Day Landings - a truthful illustration of the times and incidents that did occur. This book also identifies a complete list of Torpoint's War fatalities, their courage, dedication and sense of sacrifice, which brought about their early demise. It is a chronicle of a short period in the town's history that students will learn from and that, for others, will hopefully rekindle lost family memories. During the London Blitz of March 1941 his family was bombed out so he has personal experience of being involved with incidents of falling bombs during the Blitz. He travelled north to Lancashire to seek refuge, returning before the end of the war to the devastation of London. In 1955 he was conscripted as a National Serviceman and served in Malaya during the Emergency (War). Demobed in 1957, in 1959 he married his wife Annette. From their marriage they have three children and seven grandchildren. In 1963 through a car accident Joe was was left partially sighted. He trained as a Design Draftsman, had to change his profession to become a Purchasing Manager, which took him to many foreign countries, before he was seconded to Devenport Dockyard in 1987. He moved to Torpoint where the family settled. In 1997, he became the Chairman of the re-formed Torpoint branch of the Royal British Legion.

Born in Canada in 1898, Cornish grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He began flying at the age of nineteen, piloting a "Jenny" aircraft during World War I, and continued to fly for the next seventy-eight years. In 1995, at the age of ninety-seven, he was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest actively flying pilot. The mid-1920s to the mid-1950s were Cornish's most active years in aviation. During that period, sod runways gave way to asphalt and concrete; navigation evolved from the iron rail compass to radar; runways that once had been outlined at night with cans of oil topped off with flaming gasoline now shimmered with multicolored electric lights; instead of being crammed next to mailbags in open-air cockpits, passengers sat comfortably in streamlined, pressurized cabins. In the early phase of that era, Cornish performed aerobatics and won air races. He went on to run a full-service flying business, served as chief pilot for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, managed the city's municipal airport, helped monitor and maintain safe skies above the continental United States during World War II, and directed Indiana's first Aeronautics Commission. Dedicating his life to flight and its many ramifications, Cornish helped guide the sensible development of aviation as it grew from infancy to maturity. Through his many personal experiences, the story of flight nationally is played out.

The book starts with the early skirmishes as each side tested the others defenses, moves through the Battle of Britain and then the Blitz, when the emphasis switched from single-engined day fighters to twin-engined night fighters, while increasingly fighters were used to sweep over enemy air fields and lines of communication in occupied France. This overlapped with the need to provide air cover for the besieged island fortress of Malta by day and by night, as well as defensive operations against Axis forces in Crete and North Africa, but as the balance of power changed in North Africa, the Desert Air Force was formed incorporating elements from many Allied air forces and the emphasis moved to offensive operations in support of ground forces. The invasions of Italy and the South of France also called for fighter cover, initially by carrier-based aircraft. The lessons learnt in North Africa were put to good use by the 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force, which accompanied the advancing allied armies towards and eventually into Germany, achieving all important air supremacy which was a major factor in the Allied victory. The book also covers Luftwaffe fighter pilots as they sought to stop the RAF by night and the USAAF by day, against increasingly overwhelming odds.
