Book excerpt: The knowledge of God and worshiping Him is the aim of our life, and we are all the travelers in this journey, but some of us are aware and other are in doubt. This book is about the aim and the map of this journey, based on the work of Attar, one of the highest and well known mystic in the world.Attar explains to us the stages and the conditions of this journey. Originally written in Persian poetry and under the name of "The Conference of the Birds"; the Seven Valleys of Attar is a poetic treatise on the methodology of mysticism.Attar scatters the fragrances of knowledge of God on earth, he burns like a lamp to turn on the candle of our soul, and helping us to find the treasures in our inward.Attar's work is like a necklace of pearls, but Attar scattered every pearl in a different direction, making it hard for a traveler to find the way. This is a free adaptation, compilation and translation of that colossal work, now it is written and codified in simple way and short sentences for easy understanding of the mystic concepts. You see here that necklace of pearls string together, so you can see his work in its order, the simple and naked expressions of this great work.Mysticism is not parable, allegory nor metaphors neither something we cannot understand it, but it makes us wonder because it has a lot of hidden meaning in it.Mysticism is the way of freedom, there is no obligation, pushing or invitation in it. It is a gift from God to us, it means He Loves us. It is the way of our maturity, it is the inner way.

Book Rumi s Way of Mysticism

Download or read book Rumi s Way of Mysticism written by Hossein Eshraghi and published by Fly with Attar in Mystic Skies. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mysticism, is a gift of God, God confers it, to who He wants, not because of our capacity, but only, as an act of Love. Mysticism is not a metaphor, but it is the essence that we express in metaphors. It is the manuscript of the play. Mysticism is the language of love, it's the knowledge and worshiping of God. It is God's Inspiration, it's a Light in our heart. Mysticism has no barriers, it does not have friends or enemies, there is no preference and no limitation in it. We should empty ourselves, from our ego to leave the space for developing our soul, and become like a reed, vibrating and echoing with a breath of God.Mathnavi-ye Moulavi is a journey from Picture to Mold and from Form to Essence. Seeing God in everything, knowing and worshiping Him, and finally being in His Presence, and finding ourselves as nothingness. It is a journey from Non-Existence to Existence, and regress or progress to Non-Existence. For Rumi all is One and One is in all.Rumi is the master of mysticism; he illuminates us about the subjects and shows us the way and how to achieve it. He explains the subjects to us, in the language of souls, and not in metaphors. His way is not separation from our physical world or to neglect our emotional or mental capacities, but to educate and bring it under control to create an intuitive mind.Rumi's aim is not converting us, but transforming us; convincing us is not his way of teaching, but illuminating us, simplifying and explaining the subjects to us, showing us the way to arrive in His Presence. We are all creatures of our Universe and he wants us to take responsibility for that; at all moments and under all circumstances. Rumi does not accept our excuses; for him, each moment has infinite possibilities, shapes and conditions, and the time is part of this alchemy. This book is a gleaning from Rumi's Masterpiece in Mysticism, known as Mathnavi "Spiritual Couplets". This is a free adaptation, compilation and translation of that book, written and codified under the subjects, for easy understanding of Mysticism. The aim of this compilation is not to sustain, confirm or deny what Rumi says, but to explain in a very simple way, what he says; to accept it totally or partially is the reader's choice and freedom.

Book The Life of the Skies

Download or read book The Life of the Skies written by Jonathan Rosen and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-02-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerial delights: A history of America as seen through the eyes of a bird-watcher John James Audubon arrived in America in 1803, when Thomas Jefferson was president, and lived long enough to see his friend Samuel Morse send a telegraphic message from his house in New York City in the 1840s. As a boy, Teddy Roosevelt learned taxidermy from a man who had sailed up the Missouri River with Audubon, and yet as president presided over America’s entry into the twentieth century, in which our ability to destroy ourselves and the natural world was no longer metaphorical. Roosevelt, an avid birder, was born a hunter and died a conservationist. Today, forty-six million Americans are bird-watchers. The Life of the Skies is a genre-bending journey into the meaning of a pursuit born out of the tangled history of industrialization and nature longing. Jonathan Rosen set out on a quest not merely to see birds but to fathom their centrality—historical and literary, spiritual and scientific—to a culture torn between the desire both to conquer and to conserve. Rosen argues that bird-watching is nothing less than the real national pastime—indeed it is more than that, because the field of play is the earth itself. We are the players and the spectators, and the outcome—since bird and watcher are intimately connected—is literally a matter of life and death.

Book excerpt: We are not here by chance, but by the design of our Creator. God chose to confer upon man the unique distinction and capacity to know Him and to love Him. But how and in which way? The way is to comprehend that the Laws and teachings of the Manifestations of God are for us, and not for others. It is the way of singleness; it is the inner way, based on our individual efforts, will and understanding. It is a purely spiritual and mental way. It is the reflection of the Sun of Reality in our souls. With our actions, feelings, sensations, thinking and knowledge, we create some kind of mould, figure, shape, power and identity for our soul, and this is what we are and what our soul will become in the next world. Being in this journey, for itself is lovely: it is when a drop becomes an ocean, a tiny seed a lofty tree and a shadow transforms to a sun. It is then, when God engraves on our soul His love. This is a free composition, adaptation and compilation, based on topics and subjects or prerequisites of Mysticism, with the aim to elucidate and simplify this journey. I hope that it will be useful for some thirsty soul.

Book The Republic of Imagination

Download or read book The Republic of Imagination written by Azar Nafisi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller The author of the beloved #1 New York Times bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran returns with the next chapter of her life in books—a passionate and deeply moving hymn to America Ten years ago, Azar Nafisi electrified readers with her multimillion-copy bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran, which told the story of how, against the backdrop of morality squads and executions, she taught The Great Gatsby and other classics of English and American literature to her eager students in Iran. In this electrifying follow-up, she argues that fiction is just as threatened—and just as invaluable—in America today. Blending memoir and polemic with close readings of her favorite novels, she describes the unexpected journey that led her to become an American citizen after first dreaming of America as a young girl in Tehran and coming to know the country through its fiction. She urges us to rediscover the America of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and challenges us to be truer to the words and spirit of the Founding Fathers, who understood that their democratic experiment would never thrive or survive unless they could foster a democratic imagination. Nafisi invites committed readers everywhere to join her as citizens of what she calls the Republic of Imagination, a country with no borders and few restrictions, where the only passport to entry is a free mind and a willingness to dream.

Book Rumi s Secret

Download or read book Rumi s Secret written by Brad Gooch and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Smash Cut, Flannery, and City Poet delivers the first popular biography of Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian poet revered by contemporary Western readers. Ecstatic love poems of Rumi, a Persian poet and Sufi mystic born over eight centuries ago, are beloved by millions of readers in America as well as around the world. He has been compared to Shakespeare for his outpouring of creativity and to Saint Francis of Assisi for his spiritual wisdom. Yet his life has long remained the stuff of legend rather than intimate knowledge. In this breakthrough biography, Brad Gooch brilliantly brings to life the man and puts a face to the name Rumi, vividly coloring in his time and place—a world as rife with conflict as our own. The map of Rumi’s life stretched over 2,500 miles. Gooch traces this epic journey from Central Asia, where Rumi was born in 1207, traveling with his family, displaced by Mongol terror, to settle in Konya, Turkey. Pivotal was the disruptive appearance of Shams of Tabriz, who taught him to whirl and transformed him from a respectable Muslim preacher into a poet and mystic. Their vital connection as teacher and pupil, friend and beloved, is one of the world’s greatest spiritual love stories. When Shams disappeared, Rumi coped with the pain of separation by composing joyous poems of reunion, both human and divine. Ambitious, bold, and beautifully written, Rumi’s Secret reveals the unfolding of Rumi’s devotion to a "religion of love," remarkable in his own time and made even more relevant for the twenty-first century by this compelling account.

Book The Mystery of Numbers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Annemarie Schimmel
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1994-04-07
  • ISBN : 0199879850
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Mystery of Numbers written by Annemarie Schimmel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-04-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the number seven lucky--even holy--in almost every culture? Why do we speak of the four corners of the earth? Why do cats have nine lives (except in Iran, where they have seven)? From literature to folklore to private superstitions, numbers play a conspicuous role in our daily lives. But in this fascinating book, Annemarie Schimmel shows that numbers have been filled with mystery and meaning since the earliest times, and across every society. In The Mystery of Numbers Annemarie Schimmel conducts an illuminating tour of the mysteries attributed to numbers over the centuries. She begins with an informative and often surprising introduction to the origins of number systems: pre-Roman Europeans, for example, may have had one based on twenty, not ten (as suggested by the English word "score" and the French word for 80, quatrevingt --four times twenty), while the Mayans had a system more sophisticated than our own. Schimmel also reveals how our fascination with numbers has led to a rich cross-fertilization of mathematical knowledge: "Arabic" numerals, for instance, were picked up by Europe from the Arabs, who had earlier adopted them from Indian sources ("Algorithm" and "algebra" are corruptions of the Arabic author and title names of a mathematical text prized in medieval Europe). But the heart of the book is an engrossing guide to the symbolism of numbers. Number symbolism, she shows, has deep roots in Western culture, from the philosophy of the Pythagoreans and Platonists, to the religious mysticism of the Cabala and the Islamic Brethren of Purity, to Kepler's belief that the laws of planetary motion should be mathematically elegant, to the unlucky thirteen. After exploring the sources of number symbolism, Schimmel examines individual numbers ranging from one to ten thousand, discussing the meanings they have had for Judaic, Christian, and Islamic traditions, with examples from Indian, Chinese, and Native American cultures as well. Two, for instance, has widely been seen as a number of contradiction and polarity, a number of discord and antithesis. And six, according to ancient and neo-platonic thinking, is the most perfect number because it is both the sum and the product of its parts (1+2+3=6 and 1x2x3=6). Using examples ranging from the Bible to the Mayans to Shakespeare, she shows how numbers have been considered feminine and masculine, holy and evil, lucky and unlucky. A highly respected scholar of Islamic culture, Annemarie Schimmel draws on her vast knowledge to paint a rich, cross-cultural portrait of the many meanings of numbers. Engaging and accessible, her account uncovers the roots of a phenomenon we all feel every Friday the thirteenth.
