This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (PIRO) is home to several partially migrating populations of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). The presence of fluvial and adfluvial movement patterns led to a large scale study of their movement behavior and morphological characteristics. The study involved measuring and implanting brook trout with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags beginning in 2004 within Sevenmile Creek and Mosquito River. The project used radio frequency identification (RFID) antennas at the mouth of each river to detect PIT tagged brook trout moving in and out of the streams. Electroshocking within the rivers was used to track within stream movements of brook trout. A subset of fluvial individuals in both systems was found to move the entire sampled length of each stream. A combined 53% of all fluvial brook trout were found more than 150 m from their original capture location (OCL). Brook trout density was significantly correlated to fluvial movement within Mosquito River, suggesting that density could be a stimulus for fluvial movements. Also within Sevenmile Creek 62%, of individuals were correctly assigned as fluvial or adfluvial using their OCL. Overall the lack of distinguishing characteristics between fluvial and adfluvial brook trout suggests that these life history tactics are varying degrees on a movement continuum within brook trout populations.

Book Genetic Investigation of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Population Structure in Lake Superior Tributaries Located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Michigan USA

This book was released on 2013 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on four tributaries located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Miners River, Mosquito River, Sevenmile Creek, and Hurricane River. Eight microsatellite loci were used to examine genetic diversity and structure between groups of brook trout. Brook trout were sampled in Open and Restricted sections from each tributary for wider comparisons between groups. Open designated sections are the downstream portion of the tributary with access to Lake Superior, whereas each Restricted section is the upstream portion above a barrier to fish movement (i.e. waterfall). Adfluvial brook trout were classified from PIT tag movement data from two of the streams (MOS and SVN). Abundance of classified adfluvial (coaster) brook trout, individuals that utilize both stream and lake environments, varied between streams (MOS=35 to SVN= 106). The results showed that adfluvial brook trout were more closely related to the fluvial brook trout from their stream of capture than to other designated adfluvial groups. All Restricted sections of rivers were most closely related to their Open section counterparts, with the exception of Hurricane Restricted which was most closely related to Sevenmile Open. Within the Restricted sections there was moderate genetic differentiation between all tributaries. Miners River was the most genetically distinct population overall followed by Mosquito River, which showed levels consistent with higher interaction rates between other tributaries. Sevenmile Creek and Hurricane River are the most genetically similar populations. This suggests that there is more movement of brook trout between Sevenmile Creek and Hurricane River than between the other sites in PIRO. I suggest that the movement of adfluvial brook trout between systems is the most likely explanation for these patterns and inter-stream movement is driving the genetic dynamics found across the population.

Book Movement Patterns of Brook Trout in a Restored Coastal Stream System in Southern Massachusetts

Download or read book Movement Patterns of Brook Trout in a Restored Coastal Stream System in Southern Massachusetts written by Erin L. Snook and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Populations of anadromous brook trout can be found from northern Canada into New England. It is believed that the extent of anadromy exhibited by coastal brook trout populations decreases with latitude, but the ecology and movements of the more southern populations are less studied. A 33-month acoustic telemetry study of anadromous brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) was conducted in a restored coastal stream and adjacent marine system in southeastern Massachusetts. Movement and migration patterns of 54 brook trout were investigated for individual differences and common features. Individuals exhibited a range of movement patterns. Some were more resident and only moved short distances, while others moved great distances covering the entire stretch of the stream (7.25 km) and moving into the marine environment. General Additive Mixed Models revealed that date was the major influence on brook trout movement between habitats and predicted peaks in movement in the spring and fall. Downstream movement peaked in the spring and in the fall, suggesting post-spawning feeding migration. Fish transitioned between habitats more often at new and full moons and when stream temperature was between 8 and 12 °C. Upstream transitions peaked as temperatures declined in winter 2011. Fifty percent of tagged brook trout were detected in the estuary during the study, suggesting that it is an important habitat for the population. In summer 2012, 14 tagged brook trout (20% of active tags) resided near one receiver at the head of the tide, which contained a thermal refugium in the form of a cold-water spring seep. Of the 84 tagged brook trout, 9.5% moved to the marine environment. Warm temperatures in saline Buttermilk Bay in the summer and cold temperatures in winter probably discourage some individuals from entering the marine environment. Compared to more northern coastal populations of brook trout, the Red Brook population appears to be less anadromous.
