Download or read book Nucleic Acids written by Irshad Ul Haq Bhat and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-08-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nucleic Acids: A Natural Target for Newly Designed Metal Chelate Based Drugs discusses how human diseases are becoming more costly to treat, along with updates on the resistance offered by disease-causing agents. The abundance of drugs in the market has provided great relief to patients, but side effects can destroy the immune system of the body. Patients need to boost their immune system, and at the same time cover expenses incurred to cure disease. Thus, a paradigm shift is needed to design a drug molecule with low cost and easy availability. Metal complexes can be a great example of such a shift, as metal ions are components of biological molecules and can achieve good binding capability to specific targets while not allowing them to damage healthy cell system. Therefore, in this book, a comprehensive compilation of recent data is provided, including the structural elucidation of metal complexes by advanced techniques and the binding pattern of metal complexes with specific targets. Focuses on recent advances and methods adopted for generating new metal-based molecules and their interactions with biomolecules, especially nucleic acids Addresses challenges for developing new metal-based drugs Examines advances in optical techniques for the characterization of metal-based drugs

Book PAHs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter E. T. Douben
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2003-07-25
  • ISBN : 047086429X
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book PAHs written by Peter E. T. Douben and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), or polyarenes, are one of the largest and most structurally diverse class of organic molecules known. High percentages of polyarenes, representing a wide range of molecular sizes and structural types, are present in coal tars and petroleum residues. The major sources of PAHs are crude oil, coal and oil shale. The fuels produced from these fossil sources constitute the primary source of energy for the industrial nations of the world, and the petrochemicals from these raw materials are the basis of the synthetic fibre and plastics industries. PAHs are however, widespread pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health must be monitored and controlled. This book will review and assess our scientific understanding of the ecological exposure and effects PAHs have in different environments and habitats. It will accomplish this by taking the recipients of the pollution in the environment as starting points and working its way back through pathways to access what is required for our understanding of effects and rationale for control. Although this book will concentrate on ecological exposure of PAHs, the general impacts of PAHs on human populations will be touched upon. It is thought to be the first book to focus on the ecological aspects of PAHs.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Biophysical and Biochemical Aspects of Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Download or read book Biophysical and Biochemical Aspects of Fluorescence Spectroscopy written by T.G. Dewey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescence spectroscopy has traditionally found wide application in bio chemistry and cell biology. Since there are relatively few naturally occurring fluorescent biomolecules, fluorescence spectroscopy offers a combination of great specificity and sensitivity. Historically, these features have been ex ploited with great success utilizing both intrinsic and extrinsic probes. Re cent applications have built upon these traditional strengths and have re sulted in the development of new instrumental techniques, novel and convenient fluorescent probes, and a deeper, theoretical understanding of fundamental processes. Frequently, fluorescence techniques are tailored to attack a specific biological problem. These new methods in turn produce new physical situations and phenomena which are often of interest to the physical chemist. Thus, progress in one area stimulates renewed interest in other areas. The goal of this book is to provide detailed monographs on the use of fluorescence to investigate problems at the forefront of biochemistry and cell biology. This book is not meant to be a comprehensive survey but rather to highlight areas of recent developments. It is designed to be readable to the novice and yet provide sufficient detail for the expert to keep abreast of recent developments. The book is organized so that it proceeds from simple biochemical sys tems to more complex cell biological ones. Chapter I on fluorescence quenching of biological structures is a good introductory chapter. It intro duces a number of elementary concepts and discusses applications to pro teins and biomembranes.

Book excerpt: Essays in Toxicology, Volume 3 covers the significant advances in several areas of toxicology, including inhalation toxicology and the tests for toxicity measurement. This volume contains four chapters, and begins with discussion of the mechanisms of pulmonary toxicology, such as the deposition of respirable materials and the cellular role in pulmonary clearance. The subsequent chapter examines the impact of physical environmental factors on drug response, including the effect of ionizing radiation and atmospheric pressure and temperature. These topics are followed by surveys of several toxicological measures for determination of the effects of long-term toxicant exposure. The concluding chapter explores the molecular and biochemical studies of toxicants, specifically their interactions resulting in binding to proteins or nucleic acids. This book will be of value to toxicologists, researchers, teachers, and students who wants to obtain a clearer view of the various aspects of toxicology.
