Book Fluidization behavior and liquid injection in three dimensional prismatic spouted beds

Download or read book Fluidization behavior and liquid injection in three dimensional prismatic spouted beds written by Swantje Pietsch and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this PhD thesis, the flow stability in a laboratory three-dimensional prismatic spouted bed is investigated both experimentally and in CFD-DEM simulations. Liquid is injected in bottom-spray configuration with the aim of a homogeneous distribution of the coating suspension on the whole particle bed. The range of stable spouting is increased by the installation of two parallel draft plates. Nevertheless, the instable spouting regime is found to be advantageous for obtaining a homogeneous coating as the draft plates prevent the mixing in the depth of the apparatus. In addition to the investigations on laboratory scale, the residence time behavior in a continuous pilot scale spouted bed is characterized using a novel tracer method with magnetizable particles. The back-mixing in the apparatus is reduced by the insertion of separation plates with defined transfer geometries.

Book Modeling and Flowsheet Simulation of Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryers Band 18

Download or read book Modeling and Flowsheet Simulation of Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryers Band 18 written by Sören Ernst Lehmann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluidized bed dryers are the prime choice when it comes to drying of heat sensitive products, commonly processed in the pharmaceutical and food industry. As many products in these industries are fine and cohesive, mechanical vibration of the dryer is used to enable or improve fluidization. Thus, the goal of this thesis is the development of a fluidized bed drying model that accounts for the influence of mechanical vibration of the dryer, as well as its implementation in an open-source flowsheet simulation framework. Continuously operated fluidized bed dryers under steady-state conditions are the focus of this thesis. The aim during model development and implementation is the broadest possible application range of the model. A custom-built vibrated fluidized bed dryer is designed and constructed for comprehensive investigations of fluidized bed hydrodynamics and drying kinetics. Based on experimental investigations, a semi-empirical model for hydrodynamics of fine and cohesive powders is developed. The new model is combined with established models to allow for the flowsheet simulation of fluidized bed dryers for particles of all Geldart groups. Additionally, the influence of vibration is accounted for. Comprehensive validation experiments are performed for particles of different Geldart groups, different dryer geometries and a variety of process parameters, including mechanical vibration. Comparison of model predictions with experimental data attributes high accuracy of predicted particle and gas properties. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are conducted to identify potential weaknesses in underlying model assumptions. Hereby, the validity of underlying assumptions is confirmed and potential optimization parameters for different applications are identified. The proposed model is unprecedented in terms of range of process parameters, variety of particle properties and dryer geometries, tested and found valid for.

Book Strategy for spray coating of highly porous and light weighting particles using spouted bed technology

Download or read book Strategy for spray coating of highly porous and light weighting particles using spouted bed technology written by Monika Goślińska and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis an in-depth experimental study of the spray coating of light weighting and mesoporous organic aerogels was carried out. The main goal of this study was to design a stable core-shell particle system with a uniform coating layer without changing the initial particle structure. Further, the applied coating layer provides many beneficial improvements and additional properties for the aerogel particles, like an enhanced mechanical stability or a protection against moisture during storage. To design the structured core-shell particles with unaffected porous structure and uniform coating layer, series of experiments was conducted. The coating process with beeswax and ethanol based shellac solutions was performed at two levels using acoustic levitation and spouted bed set ups. At single particle level the basic influences on particle structure were captured. During coating at multiple particle level, which was performed in spouted bed, the results were validated. The optimum coating process parameters were identified. A uniform and stable core-shell particle system was designed. No change of initial porous particle structure was observed.

  • Author : Albrecht Bertram
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-10-23
  • ISBN : 354085715X
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Micro Macro Interactions written by Albrecht Bertram and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many materials or media in nature and technology possess a microstructure which determines their macroscopic behaviour. The knowledge of the relevant mechanisms is often more comprehensive on the micro than on the macro scale. On the other hand, not all information on the micro level is relevant for the understanding of this macro behaviour. Therefore, averaging and homogenization methods are needed to select only the specific information from the micro scale, which influences the macro scale. These methods also open the possibility to design or to influence microstructures with the objective to optimize their macro behaviour. This book presents the development of new methods in this interdisciplinary field of macro- micro-interactions of different engineering branches like mechanical and process engineering, applied mathematics, theoretical, and computational physics. In particular, solids with microstructures and particle systems are considered.

Book Carbon Dioxide Mineralization and Utilization

Download or read book Carbon Dioxide Mineralization and Utilization written by Pen-Chi Chiang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-04 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on an important technology for mineralizing and utilizing CO2 instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. CO2 mineralization and utilization demonstrated in the waste-to-resource supply chain can “reduce carbon dependency, promote resource and energy efficiency, and lessen environmental quality degradation,” thereby reducing environmental risks and increasing economic benefits towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In this book, comprehensive information on CO2 mineralization and utilization via accelerated carbonation technology from theoretical and practical considerations was presented in 20 Chapters. It first introduces the concept of the carbon cycle from the thermodynamic point of view and then discusses principles and applications regarding environmental impact assessment of carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies. After that, it describes the theoretical and practical considerations for “Accelerated Carbonation (Mineralization)” including analytical methods, and systematically presents the carbonation mechanism and modeling (process chemistry, reaction kinetics and mass transfer) and system analysis (design and analysis of experiments, life cycle assessment and cost benefit analysis). It then provides physico-chemical properties of different types of feedstock for CO2 mineralization and then explores the valorization of carbonated products as green materials. Lastly, an integral approach for waste treatment and resource recovery is introduced, and the carbonation system is critically assessed and optimized based on engineering, environmental, and economic (3E) analysis. The book is a valuable resource for readers who take scientific and practical interests in the current and future Accelerated Carbonation Technology for CO2 Mineralization and Utilization.

Book Numerical Simulation for Next Generation Thermal Power Plants

Download or read book Numerical Simulation for Next Generation Thermal Power Plants written by Falah Alobaid and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides highly specialized researchers and practitioners with a major contribution to mathematical models’ developments for energy systems. First, dynamic process simulation models based on mixture flow and two-fluid models are developed for combined-cycle power plants, pulverised coal-fired power plants, concentrated solar power plant and municipal waste incineration. Operation data, obtained from different power stations, are used to investigate the capability of dynamic models to predict the behaviour of real processes and to analyse the influence of modeling assumptions on simulation results. Then, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation programme, so-called DEMEST, is developed. Here, the fluid-solid, particle-particle and particle-wall interactions are modeled by tracking all individual particles. To this purpose, the deterministic Euler-Lagrange/Discrete Element Method (DEM) is applied and further improved. An emphasis is given to the determination of inter-phase values, such as volumetric void fraction, momentum and heat transfers, using a new procedure known as the offset-method and to the particle-grid method allowing the refinement of the grid resolution independently from particle size. Model validation is described in detail. Moreover, thermochemical reaction models for solid fuel combustion are developed based on quasi-single-phase, two-fluid and Euler-Lagrange/MP-PIC models. Measurements obtained from actual power plants are used for validation and comparison of the developed numerical models.
