Book Urban Water II

Download or read book Urban Water II written by S. Mambretti and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Water II is the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on the Design, Construction, Maintenance, Monitoring and Control of Urban Water Systems. The meeting was reconvened following the success of the first conference held in the New Forest, home to the Wessex Institute of Technology in 2012. Water systems in the urban environment consist of supply networks as well as sewage and storm drainage systems. They interact with each other and with warm bodies such as rivers, lakes and aquifers, and this interaction affects the quality and quantity of the different systems. As our cities continue to expand, their urban infrastructure must be re-evaluated and adapted to new requirements related to the increase in population and the growing areas under urbanisation. New water systems are also required to reduce the risk associated with floods, network failures and many others related to inadequate networks. New systems should reduce economic losses and environmental impacts as well as promote a higher degree of reliability. Improved management, measurement and control mechanisms are needed to ensure the efficiency and safety of urban water systems. Topics such as contamination and pollution discharges in urban water bodies, as well as the monitoring of water recycling systems are currently receiving a great deal of attention from researchers and professional engineers working in the water industry. Architects and town planners are also aware of the importance of the interaction between urban water cycles and city planning and landscaping. Management of all these aspects requires the development of specialised computer tools that can respond to the increased complexity of urban water systems. Relating to the subject areas of Water supply networks and Urban Drainage, topics covered include: Leakage and losses; Modelling and experimentation; Safety and security of water systems; Maintenance and repairs; Water quality; Water savings and reuse; Surface water and groundwater sources; Reservoirs; Network design; Waste water treatment and disposal; Structural works and infrastructure; Water quality issues; Combined sewer networks; Flood control; Storage tanks; Environmental impact; Domestic and industrial waste water issues.

Book Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation

Download or read book Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation written by Enrique Cabrera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 1210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic machinery such as turbines and pumps is widely used around the world. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in two volumes. In this first volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Turbines, Analysis and Design Hydraulic Pumps Hydraulic Elements, Dynamic Characterization and Hydraulic Behaviour Cavitation and Sand Erosion In the second volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Transients and Control Systems Related to Hydraulic Machinery and Plants Oscillatory and Vibration Problems in Hydraulic Machinery and Power Stations Experimental Investigations related to Hydraulic Machinery and its Applications Practical Applications of the Hydraulic Machinery Monitoring, Predictive Maintenance and Refurbishment The 119 papers presented at the Symposium, from research groups, consulting companies and manufacturers, constitute an important collection for investigators, engineers and technicians who are interested in updated information on hydraulic machinery. This book is intended to be a reference text comprising the latest innovations on this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their variety, the vibration phenomena from many different engineering fields can be classified into a relatively few basic excitation mechanisms. The classification enables engineers to identify all possible sources of excitation in a given system and to assess potential dangers. This graduate-level text presents a synthesis of research results and practical experience from disparate fields in the form of engineering guidelines. It is particularly geared toward assessing the possible sources of excitation in a flow system, in identifying the actual danger spots, and in finding appropriate remedial measures or cures. Flow-induced vibrations are presented in terms of their basic elements: body oscillators, fluid oscillators, and sources of excitation. By stressing these basic elements, the authors provide a basis for the transfer of knowledge from one system to another, as well as from one engineering field to another. In this manner, well-known theories on cylinders in cross-flow or well-executed solutions from the field of wind engineering--to name just two examples--may be useful in other systems or fields on which information is scarce. The unified approach is broad enough to permit treatment of the major excitation mechanism, yet simple enough to be of practical use.

Book Topics in Applied Mechanics

Download or read book Topics in Applied Mechanics written by J.F. Dijksman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In collaboration with the Contact Group Experimental Mechanics in The Netherlands and under the auspices of the Technological Institute of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Ingenieurs Vereniging (Royal Flemish Society of Engineers), the Department of Ap plied Mechanics of the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs (Royal Institution of Engineers in The Netherlands) organised the second National Mechanics Congress in The Netherlands, on November 16-18, 1992. About hundred participants from universities and industrial research laboratories in The Netherlands and Belgium discussed topics around the theme: Building Bridges, Integration of Theory and Applications in Applied Mechanics. Building bridges is of course one of the main tasks of a civil engineer, in order to improve the infrastructure of our society. Strength, stiffness and stability have to be guaranteed for a large number of years of service. Localised effects such as shear lag in longitudinal stiffeners, small cracks in concrete structures and effects of corrosion may on the long tenn lead to catastrofic failure of bridges. During the congress J.P. Gailliez presented a talk about the hydraulic ship lifts in the Canal du Centre in south Belgium. Built more than a hundred years ago, the elevators still are in a perfect condition and are recognized now as an industrial archeological monument.

Book Applied Hydraulic Transients

Download or read book Applied Hydraulic Transients written by Mihail Popescu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the problem of transient hydraulic computation, for hydroelectric plants and pumping stations, with an emphasis on numerical methods. The topics covered include: the waterhammer in hydraulic systems under pressure; experimental results concerning the waterhammer; protection of pumping stations with reference to the waterhammer; hydraulic resonance in hydroelectric power plant and pumping stations; mass oscillation in hydraulic surge systems; hydraulic stability of systems endowed with surge tanks; experimental results in the study of mass oscillations; hydroelectric power plants and pumping stations designed in complex hydraulic schemes; and computation of unsteady motions in the intermediate domain between rapid and slow motions. This book is not a standard monograph based on previously published material, but is primarily grounded on the theoretical and applied results obtained by authors during more than 20 years of practice. It considers the problems of hydraulic computation as encountered in the design of a significant number of hydroelectric power plants and pumping stations in Romania.
