Book Exploring Winding Roads and Dusty Trails

Download or read book Exploring Winding Roads and Dusty Trails written by Joe Gonzalez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it that makes a person dream and come up with some of the wildest stories one can dare tell to a husband, wife, friend, or stranger? First of all, are they funny stories or scary stories? Are they stories anyone would dare to believe? Are they stories that ordinary people would really like to hear about or read about? And what in the world created such funny or unbelievable stories? Was it stress, or was it insomnia? Or are we just natural dreamers? My stories probably come to me from having too much time in my hands and thinking too much. The following stories probably came to me as dreams when I was doing a lot of daydreaming back in the seventies. At the time, I was pulling my weight while working at White’s Auto Store warehouse in the small town of Shallowater, Texas. I was a certified forklift driver pulling orders, license, and all. I worked in what was called Area 8. I pulled the big boxed toys, bicycles, and lawn mowers. I also pulled the fertilizer bag orders. Working inside a warehouse had many disadvantages. There was always dust all over the place. The warehouse was always hot in summer and pretty cold in winter. Many times when it was slow, I would let my mind just wander off into oblivion. That’s when my stories were born and began to take shape. Characters and names of characters would pop into my mind out of nowhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coffiner of Escondido The Coffiner of Escondido is an enchanting narrative following the life of Lourdes Pena, a gifted artisan and clairvoyant residing on the outskirts of a devout village in nineteenth-century Mexico. Lourdes possesses a unique skill--crafting intricate coffins adorned with scenes shown to her by the spirits surrounding her. Her creative process fuses Italian Renaissance art's elegance with Mexican folk art's soulful vibrancy, resulting in coffins that transcend mere functionality. Yet Lourdes's journey is anything but ordinary. As a woman with unconventional talents, she grapples with isolation and prejudice in her tight-knit community. Her only companions are her devoted mother, a loyal dog, and an ardent suitor. When the local padre takes a keen interest in her, admiration blends with moral scrutiny, casting a complex shadow over her already challenging existence. The Coffiner of Escondido masterfully weaves a captivating tapestry of creativity, spirituality, and indomitable strength. Lourdes's tale is a timeless exploration of the human spirit's resilience against societal norms and marginalization. Cummins skillfully merges historical authenticity with engaging prose, inviting readers to experience a world where art becomes a conduit for deeper connections and personal empowerment. Lourdes Pena's journey is an inspiring reminder that the human spirit can flourish even in the face of adversity, leaving an indelible mark on our histories and our hearts. 76

Download or read book Miracles written by David L Weddle and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the dominance of scientific explanation in the modern world, at the beginning of the twenty-first century faith in miracles remains strong, particularly in resurgent forms of traditional religion. In Miracles, David L. Weddle examines how five religious traditions—Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam—understand miracles, considering how they express popular enthusiasm for wondrous tales, how they provoke official regulation because of their potential to disrupt authority, and how they are denied by critics within each tradition who regard belief in miracles as an illusory distraction from moral responsibility. In dynamic and accessible prose, Weddle shows us what miracles are, what they mean, and why, despite overwhelming scientific evidence, they are still significant today: belief in miracles sustains the hope that, if there is a reality that surpasses our ordinary lives, it is capable of exercising—from time to time—creative, liberating, enlightening, and healing power in our world.

Book excerpt: Urban realism in the tradition of E.L. Doctorow, William Kennedy, Philip Roth and Jimmy Breslin, "When Jack Was With Us" immerses the reader in neighborhood life in New York City from the late 1950's through the late 1960's. Unlike many other novels by Baby Boomers, this novel makes no attempt to sugarcoat or nostaligize; it presents life as the author saw it while growing up, in all its beauty and all its brutality. There is no single protagonist; a number of characters whose lives intertwine each seek to make the best out of their lives amid the rich and often volatile ethnic tapestry of New York, against the backdrop of social change as the novel moves from the somnolent 1950's through the turbulent 1960's. Each character struggles and finds his/her damnation or redemption amid a city that personifies a nation in flux. It is a "coming of age" not only for the characters but for the greater American collective psyche.
