The Hebrew psalms, or their prototypes the canticles of the Akkada, lose little in beauty or majest translated into any language. While form makes a larg part of the beauty of poetry, yet poetry is more than form Homer in prose is more satisfactory than Homer in Englisl hexameters. If the thought and the spirit are preserved the metre of a translation is of comparatively small con sequence. Her rose of felicity bloomed anew, And the Huma' of fortune above her flew. A dream had bound her in fetters: she Saw a vision again and her soul was free. So ever from dream or from fancy springs The joy or the sorrow which this world brings. Most happy is he who from both can fly, And lightly pass the dread whirlpool by. Her father rejoiced, and with care and speed He prepared the escort the bride would need. Thousands of maids in their youthful bloom He chose from the fairest of Rus and Rum. Their breasts were pomegranates, their mouths, half-shut, Showed each like a tender pistachio-nut, 1 The huma is a fabulous bird whose shadow falling on a man's head denotes that he will become a king. Thence his attainments Kais1 assiduous drew, And scattered pearls from lips of ruby hue; 1 Kais was the original name of the lover, afterward called Majnun, in consequence of the madness produced by his passion. And there, of different tribe and gentle mien, A lovely maid of tender years was seen: Her mental powers an early bloom displayed; Her graceful form in simple garb arrayed: Bright as the morn, her cypress shape, and eyes Dark as the stag's, were viewed with fond surprise; And when her cheek this Arab moon revealed, A thousand hearts were won; no pride, no shield, Could check her beauty's power, resistless grown, Given to enthrall and charm--but chiefly one. Her richly flowing locks were black as night, And Laili1 she was called--that heart's delight: One single glance the nerves to frenzy wrought, One single glance bewildered every thought; And, when o'er Kais affection's blushing rose Diffused its sweetness, from him fled repose: Tumultuous passion danced upon his brow; He sought to woo her, but he knew not how: He gazed upon her cheek, and, as he gazed, Love's flaming taper more intensely blazed. Soon mutual pleasure warm'd each other's heart; Ixive conquer'd both--they never dreamt to part; 1 Laili, in Arabic, signifies night; the name, however, has been referred to her color, and she is accused of possessing no beauty but in the eyes of her lover, being short in stature, and dark in complexion. A poet is said to have addressed her, saying: "Art thou the person for whom Kais lost his reason? 1 do not see that thou art so beautiful." "Silence!" she said," thou art not Majnun." Another...

This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers Culled From the Gulistan, or Rose Garden, and From the Bostan, or Pleasure Garden of Sadi: A Persian Poet, Who Flourished in the 13th Century I have wandered through various quarters of the world, And spent my days conversing with every one I met In every corner I found something to profit me From every sheaf I gathered an ear. On one occasion, he tells us himself, that whilst he had withdrawn into the desert near Jerusalem to perform his religious exercises, he was made captive by the Franks, who sent him to work with some Jews in digging the trenches at Tripoli. Here he was recognized by an acquaintance whom he had known at Aleppo, and who, pitying his sad condition, redeemed him with ten dinars, took him home with him, and subsequently married him to his daughter, giving him a portion of one hundred dinars. This marriage did not prove a happy one. Her disposition, he says, was ill-tempered and abusive, so that it quite destroyed his comfort. One day tauntingly she exclaimed, Art not thou the man whom my father bought for ten dinars Yes, he replied, and sold to thee for a hundred! Sadi married a second time at Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. We may hope that his second nuptials were crowned with more felicity than his first appears to have been. In the Bostan is found an affecting passage, in which he deplores the death of his son in terms of the most poignant anguish. The events of Sadi's life recorded by his biographers are but few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden of Love: Flowers Gathered From the Poets The following poems are arranged in a certain sequence, so that as far as possible, they may assimilate themselves to the order of Nature in a garden throughout the year. They have been selected to this end, and are, through the exigencies of the subject, mainly examples of that "lyrical cry" by which personal human emotion is expressed in rhythm and rhyme. Though many of them are long familiar to the lover of English literature, and none appear for the first time, I believe this to be the most representative collection of love-poems that has hitherto been compiled. The reader can hardly fail to notice with surprise the extraordinary variety of style, thought, and treatment which is to be met with, in dealing with the single subject of Love in its different phases. And this, although several aspects of Love have purposely or of necessity been omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flowers of Literature, Vol. 2 of 4: Consisting of Selections From History, Biography, Poetry, and Romance; Jeux D'esprit, Traditionary Relics and Essays, With Translations From Approved Authors IN all the history of perils and sufferings encountered at sea, fertile as it is in terrific events, there is as suredly no darker page than that which contains the narrative of the shipwreck of the Medusa frigate. It may, indeed, justly be doubted whether any similar cc currence was ever marked by such circumstances of extreme horror.. In many instances of shipwreck the mind 1s somewhat relieved and solaced by the contem plation of the patience, the fortitude, and the mutual kindness, displayed by the individuals who are the theme of the story, but, ln this instance, no such con solation 1s afl'orded. All the bad passions seem to have conspired with natural dangers, to render the' situation of the crew of the Medusa as terrible as imagination itself can possibly conceive.
