Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers of Mary: Addresses in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Delivered at Ingolstadt, May, 1858 A few years ago when the German edition of this little book first made its appearance in public, it pro duced a deep impression upon its readers. For more than a year, the thought constantly recurred to me, how much good might result in honor of the exalted Queen of Heaven if it were published in the English language; more especially as the addresses are con vincing and simple; while the language graceful and animated, speaks eloquently to the pious heart. Therefore I thought the book to be one of devotion for those people who speak the English language. That it may become properly such, I added to the addresses the Litany of Loretto, together with some other prayers suitable for the beautiful month of May. Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book, A Month with Mary, also originated from an act of charity of Father Dolindo. Father Dolindo wrote A Month with Mary on pocket-sized pages joined into small fascicles of 8 to 12 pages. He sent them to Laura de Rosis every two to three days and later transcribed them with some modifications in volume III of his Autobiography: The Story of My Life in the Plan of the Great Mercy of God, pp. 1140 ff (cf. Epistolario 1:212n, 218n).This work is from 1912: one of those years which passed in the life of Father Dolindo with the cadence of a "Way of the Cross" ... But he, serene as ever, loved Christ the more, loved Our Lady the more and reflected this love in these few pages to which he wished to give the significant title: A Profound Reform of Heart in the School of Mary. These meditations are written in the style of the Imitation of Christ.Meditations for just one soul!

On the evening before the first of May, the persons who unite to practise this devotion will assemble before an altar, over which is an image of the Blessed Virgin, which should be adorned witk flowers, and other suitable decorations. The Litany of the Loretto is either said or sung. After this the meditation is slowly read by one, in a clear and loud voice, and a long pause made at the end of each of the three parts into which it is divided. The example or edifying narrative, subjoined to each meditation, is then read; after which the prayer is to be recited, in which all should unite, or at least endeavour to excite within themselves sentiments corresponding with those expressed in the prayer. After the 'practice' and 'aspiration' have been read, the hymn of the Blessed Virgin, "Bright Mother of our Maker, Hail!" may be sung, or the Rosary, or some other approved devotion in her honour may be recited. The practice recommended each day may, generally, be performed at the usual hour of assembling, or at any other time of the day that may be found most convenient. The aspiration should, if possible, be committed to memory, so that it might frequently be repeated during the course of each day. See the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Mary at the end of this book. 2. The meditation read each evening should be carefully impressed on the memory, and made the subject of half, or, at least, a quarter of an hour's reflection, on the following morning. A resolution to practise the particular virtue which it inculcates should be the fruit of this morning exercise. If possible, Mass should be heard each day; and the ordinary devotions to Mary practised with more than ordinary fervour and exactness. 3. As the object of...

Book The Barn at the End of the World

Download or read book The Barn at the End of the World written by Mary Rose O'Reilley and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “About the subtlest, most sane-making book on contemporary spirituality that I’ve read in years. It’s also the funniest.”—Joanna Macy, author of Active Hope Deciding that her life was insufficiently grounded in real-world experience, Mary Rose O’Reilley, a Quaker reared as a Catholic, embarked on a year of tending sheep. In this decidedly down-to-earth, often-hilarious book, O’Reilley describes her work in an agricultural barn and her extended visit to a Buddhist monastery in France, where she studied with Thich Nhat Hanh. She seeks, in both barn and monastery, a spirituality based not in “climbing out of the body” but rather in existing fully in the world. “O'Reilley has obviously mastered the craft of writing. Her rich, allusive prose draws on Catholicism, Quakerism, Buddhism, monastic tradition, Shakespeare and the Bible. Her short vignettes are luminous with faith matters, yet full of the earthy details of animal husbandry, resulting in a style that's a cross between Kathleen Norris and James Herriot.”—Publishers Weekly “This enjoyable book offers lingering pleasure.”—Library Journal
