Book The Desert

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Charles Van Dyke
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 1999-08-12
  • ISBN : 9780801862243
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book The Desert written by John Charles Van Dyke and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1999-08-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance in 1901, John C. Van Dyke's The Desert has been considered one of the classics of American nature writing. Before its publication, Americans thought of deserts as scorpion-infested wastelands—with names like Devil's Domain and the Lands That God Forgot. All this changed as The Desert drew attention to the extraordinary beauty that existed in the American West: rolling sand dunes, golden vistas, vibrant sunsets, and remarkable plant and animal life. Van Dyke's book captured the nation's imagination at a time when attitudes about the land were changing. It provided a vocabulary that continues to be used as appreciation of deserts increases and ever greater pressures lead to new calls to protect these fragile environments. With a critical introduction by Peter Wild, this edition offers new insights—and reveals some surprising truths—about this legendary author and his best known work. Van Dyke was not, it seems, the "plaster saint of the desert." He was not entirely honest with his readers about the journeys that inspired the book, and his natural history includes serious errors. But in this more informed reading, Wild notes, Van Dyke "emerges as all the more fascinating a writer and his famous book becomes far more intriguing than most readers have imagined through the decades." As the centennial of its publication approaches and the complex story behind its long success is finally told, this new edition of The Desert reveals an equally complex and dramatic narrative: our changing relationship with the American landscape. "Van Dyke came at just the right time... No sooner had Americans conquered the wilderness, cut down the forests, and slaughtered the buffalo than the romantic nation began sentimentalizing the past, longing for what it had just destroyed."—from the Introduction

Book Telling Details

Download or read book Telling Details written by Jiwei Xiao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a detail? How is it different from xijie, its Chinese counterpart? Is "reading for the details" fundamentally different from "reading for the plot"? Did xijie xiaoshuo, the Chinese novel of details, give the world its earliest form of modern fiction? Inspired by studies of vision and modernity as well as cinema, this book gazes out on the larger world through the small aperture of the detail, highlighting how concrete literary minutiae become "telling" as they reveal the dynamics of seeing and hearing, the vibrations of the mind, the complexity of the everyday, and the imperative to recognize the minute, the humble, and the hidden. In a strain of masterpieces of xijie xiaoshuo, such details play a key role in pivoting the novel from didacticism towards a capacious modern form. Examining the Chinese detail as both a common idiom and a unique concept, and extrapolating it from individual works to the culture at large, reveals under-explored areas of the Chinese novel: its psychological depths, its connections with other genres and forms, its partaking in Chinese material life and capitalist modernity, as well as repressions and difficulties surrounding its reception in national and international contexts. With carefully chosen case studies, Xiao’s book not only exemplifies the value of deep reading in approaching complex works of Chinese fiction as world literature, it also throws light on the aesthetics and politics of "the unseen," which has become central to a humanist tradition that flows across literature, cinema, and other art forms.

Book excerpt: Having taken the first step toward the Truth with us, how far are you now willing to go? You have tasted the latent potential that exists in your core. To have only scratched the surface of that potential simply cannot be the end of our journey together. Hyperions struggle endures. We stewards of the last free city know too well that we cannot hope to win a battle of attrition. Something must be done to alter our fate before we are utterly consumed by it. If we fall, humanity will require men and women like you to bear our standards onward. Force of Gravity is the second installment in the saga of Benjamin Meaks. We have seen the fires of hope and belief kindled within him. Now, we must see the steel of his resolve tempered by far greater trials than any youthful spirit ought to suffer. To continue his tale, you must also be prepared to confront the inconvenient truths of your present existence. If you have come this far with us, we are already victorious. It may not be possible to divine which seed will flourish and rise to the mightiest height, but it would be foolish not to recognize that more seeds are superior to few. Hyperion will never turn away an inquisitive mind. We can ill afford to be so wasteful.
