Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charming, gorgeously illustrated botanical encyclopedia for your favorite romantic, local witch, bride-to-be, or green-thumbed friend. Floriography is a full-color guide to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs. The book explores the coded significances associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy. The language of flowers was historically used as a means of secret communication. It soared in popularity during the 19th century, especially in Victorian England and the U.S., when proper etiquette discouraged open displays of emotion. Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history. Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation-starter, or thoughtful gift.

Book excerpt: Fatal Flowers is the third in a colorful cozy mystery series from Jess Dylan, set in the Flower House—where you’re as likely to find a killer as a chrysanthemum. As Aerieville, Tennessee’s Flower House finally gains in popularity, Sierra Ravenswood finds herself feeling ready for new challenges. Luckily, the shop has grabbed the attention of the mayor’s daughter, and bride-to-be, Marissa Lakely. Sierra is thrilled, and nervous, to land her most important job yet: providing flowers for the biggest wedding Aerieville has ever seen. Fortunately, Marissa bucks all stereotypes and is far from a bridezilla—but her wedding planner, Taz Banyan, has apparently taken on the role for himself. He’s uptight, intense, and a little intimidating. But Taz aside, everything seems to be under control...until Sierra makes a startling discovery in the great room: the wedding planner, lying in a heap at the bottom of the stairs, in very bad shape. In fact, he survives only long enough to mutter: "It was the snake." As Granny Mae would say, seeing a snake is rarely a good sign, and this was clearly no exception. With the town on edge and the wedding up in the air, Sierra refuses to stop asking questions in her determination to put an end to this latest danger—so both Aerieville and the Flower House can flourish once more.

Book Flower in the Crannied Wall

  • Author : Jóhanna Sigrún Ingvarsdóttir
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2022-10-05
  • ISBN : 3756821153
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book Flower in the Crannied Wall written by Jóhanna Sigrún Ingvarsdóttir and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story in this book is a true account of events that the author, Jóhanna Sigrún Ingvarsdóttir, experienced as a child. The setting is a small farm in a barren valley at the foot of the glacier Drangajökull in the Westfjords in Iceland, north below the Arctic Circle. The title quotes a poem by Alfred Tennyson, Flower in the Crannied Wall, which he wrote in 1863. The poem appeared in the book Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era by John E. Esslemont. The residents of Lyngholt, a remote farm in the aforementioned valley of Unaðsdalur (Valley of Delight) on Snæfjallaströnd (Snowy Mountains Coast), happened to receive a copy of the first translation of the book into Icelandic. During the short time this book remained in Lyngholt, the book was carefully studied. A long time later, and as it seemed after a futile search, this valuable book reappeared in an unexpected way. Frásögnin í bókinni er sönn lýsing á atburðum sem höfundurinn, Jóhanna Sigrún Ingvarsdóttir, upplifði sem barn. Sögusviðið er lítill sveitabær í hrjóstrugum dal við rætur Drangajökuls norður undir heimskautsbaug. Titillinn vitnar í ljóð eftir Alfred Tennyson, Blóm í brotnum vegg, sem hann orti árið 1863. Ljóðið hafði verið birt í bókinni Bahá'u'lláh og nýi tíminn eftir John E. Essslemont. Fyrsta þýðing bókarinnar á íslensku barst í hendur íbúanna á Lyngholti, afskekktum sveitabæ í áðurnefndum dal sem ber nafnið Unaðsdalur á Snæfjallaströnd. Bókin var gaumgæfilega lesin á þeim stutta tíma sem hún dvaldi á Lyngholti. Löngu síðar, og að því er virðist eftir árangurslausa leit, barst þessi hugleikna bók aftur á óvæntar slóðir.
