Book Aerodynamic Stability and Control wind Tunnel Data Correlation

Download or read book Aerodynamic Stability and Control wind Tunnel Data Correlation written by G. R. Casteel and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective was to collect and analyze aerodynamic stability and control data for the XV-4B, XV-5A, and P-1127 VTOL configurations. Correlation and analysis of existing model data were made to investigate hover and transition characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic power effects, sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were nondimensional coefficients used to present VTOL data and wind tunnel test techniques. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using an inlet only model and a jet only model to investigate special test and analysis problems for these components. The agreement between different sets of XV-4B model data was, in general, found to be poor. However, the nondimensional coefficients used by Lockheed to reduce to XV-4B model data appear to be valid parameters for this category of VTOL airplane. The jet entrainment flow was shown by experiment to be the primary cause of the XV-4B power effects, and the XV-4B jet path was experimentally and theoretically determined.

Book Flow Visualization Studies of the XFV 12A

Download or read book Flow Visualization Studies of the XFV 12A written by Charles Lewis Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The XFV-12A incorporates thrust augmentation to generate propulsive lift. Under the influence of forward flight the lift jets are subject to bending, which produces shed vortices that induce velocities at the aircraft. Additionally, operations in ground effect during hover and for small forward velocities can result in reingestion of engine exhaust gases. The objectives of this thesis were twofold. The first was to investigate analytically aspects of the vortex shedding phenomenon through the application of potential flow around the lifting surfaces of the aircraft. Secondly, experimental analysis was performed to determine the unique reingestion properties of the XFV-12A operating statically under various wing and canard configurations.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the In stitute has wnducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guid ance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his creative inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute. The International Symposium on Recent Advances in Aero dynamics and Aconstics was held at Stanford University, Stanford, California, U.S.A., August 22-26, 198:~. Thirty-five distinguished scientists were invited to present a comprehensive review on the fol lowing subject areas: unsteady aerodynamics, jets and shear layers, V /STOL aircraft aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and aerodynamics,.

Book Experimental Investigation of Hover Flowfields in Water at the McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Hover Flowfields in Water at the McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories written by K. R. Saripalli and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hover Research Facility, a new experimental facility, is designed to study the flowfields generated by hovering VTOL aircraft and helicopters. Water is used as the working medium because of its inherent advantages in flow visualization and laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measurements. Applications of the HRF include: (1) experimental investigation of twin-jet impingement flow with application to VTOL aircraft; (2) visualization of the flowfield around a fully contoured, model supersonic fighter/attack short-take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft; and (3) performance testing of a No Tail Rotor (NOTAR) helicopter in hover mode by use of a scaled model. Flow-visualization and quantitative LDV data on these experiments are presented.
