Book excerpt: The world we live in exhibits, on different scales, many phenomena related to the diffusion of gases. Among them are the movement of gases in earth strata, the aeration of soils, the drying of certain materials, some catalytic reactions, purification by adsorption, isotope separation, column chro matography, cooling of nuclear reactors, and the permeability of various packing materials. The evolution of the understanding of this subject has not always been straightforward and progressive-there has been much confusion and many doubts and misunderstandings, some of which remain to this day. The main reason for the difficulties in the development of this subject is, we now know, the lack of an understanding of the effects of walls on diffusing systems. Textbooks usually treat diffusion on two levels: at the physicochemi cal or molecular level, making use of the kinetic theory of gases (which while a very rigorous and well-founded theory nevertheless is valid only for systems without walls), or at the level of a transport phenomenon, a level geared toward applications. The influence of walls is usually disregarded or is treated very briefly (for example, by taking account of the Knudsen regime or by introducing a transition regime of limited validity) in a way unconnected with previous studies. As a consequence, the extensive, gener alized, and well-founded knowledge of systems without walls has often been applied without sound basis to real situations, i.e., to systems with walls.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: none, University of Wuppertal, course: Computational Mechanics of Engineering - Computational Fluid Dynamics, language: English, abstract: The objective of this thesis is to develop a generic CFD solver to simulate multicomponent gas transport involving multiscales. A comparative study between the mixture and Eulerian approach for multicomponent flows is done. Eulerian approach where every component has its own characteristic velocity is used in this work with reasons stated. Inter-component momentum exchange term has been modelled using Maxwell-Stefan relations. A semi-heuristic drag term for modelling porous drag is used. Temperature transport for the mixture is developed by considering an ensemble averaging method of all components for the mixture. Volume averaged form for all the equations is applied by considering fluid in presence of porous media as a pseudo-homogeneous medium. All the equations and terms mentioned are implemented in the solver. An open source CFD software OpenFOAM has been used to develop the solver. Capability of the solver to simulate diffusion dominated mass transfer has been established by using a Loschmidt tube which involves diffusion of a ternary mixture. Accuracy of 0.5% is observed for the case in comparison with analytical solution for the problem in one dimension. Validation of porous drag and energy transport has been done by using a fully developed laminar flow over two parallel plates and comparing the Nusselt numbers. The Nusselt numbers of 8.85 and 9.13 for porous and non-porous zones were observed compared to the literature values of 7.54 and 9.8. The reason for the deviations are stated.

Book excerpt: The ubiquitous examples of unsteady-state fluid flow pertain to the production or depletion of oil and gas reservoirs. After introductory information about petroleum-bearing formations and fields, reservoirs, and geologic codes, empirical methods for correlating and predicting unsteady-state behavior are presented. This is followed by a more theoretical presentation based on the classical partial differential equations for flow through porous media.Whereas these equations can be simplified for the flow of (compressible) fluids, and idealized solutions exist in terms of Fourier series for linear flow and Bessel functions for radial flow, the flow of compressible gases requires computer solutions, read approximations. An analysis of computer solutions indicates, fortuitously, that the unsteady-state behavior can be reproduced by steady-state density or pressure profiles at successive times. This will demark draw down and the transition to long-term depletion for reservoirs with closed outer boundaries.As an alternative, unsteady-state flow may be presented in terms of volume and surface integrals, and the methodology is fully developed with examples furnished. Among other things, permeability and reserves can be estimated from well flow tests.The foregoing leads to an examination of boundary conditions and degrees of freedom and raises arguments that the classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics may not be allowable representations. For so-called open petroleum reservoirs where say water-drive exists, the simplifications based on successive steady-state profiles provide a useful means of representation, which is detailed in the form of material balances.Unsteady-State Fluid Flow provides:• empirical and classical methods for correlating and predicting the unsteady-state behavior of petroleum reservoirs• analysis of unsteady-state behavior, both in terms of the classical partial differential equations, and in terms of volume and surface integrals• simplifications based on successive steady-state profiles which permit application to the depletion of both closed reservoirs and open reservoirs, and serves to distinguish drawdown, transition and long-term depletion performance.
