Book excerpt: The performance of dry, low NOx gas turbines, which employ lean premixed (or partially premixed) combustors, is often limited by combustor stability. To overcome this issue, a novel design, referred to as a Stagnation Point Reverse Flow (SPRF) combustor, has been recently demonstrated. The SPRF combustor has been shown to produce low NOx emissions with both gaseous and liquid fuels. The objective of this thesis is to elucidate the interactions between the flowfield and combustion processes in this combustor for gas- and liquid-fueled operation. This is achieved with experimental measurements employing various optical diagnostic techniques. These include Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), chemiluminescence imaging, Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) of OH radicals and laser scattering from liquid droplets. Velocity measurements in gas-fueled operation show that both nonreacting and reacting flows exhibit a stagnation region with low mean velocity and high turbulence intensities. The high shear between the forward and reverse flows causes significant recirculation resulting in enhanced entrainment and mixing of the returning product gases into the incoming reactant jet for the reacting flow cases, which enables stable operation of the combustor at very lean equivalence ratios. Nonpremixed operation produces a flowfield similar to premixed case except in the near-field region where high turbulence intensities result in significant fuel-air mixing before combustion occurs. Operation of the SPRF combustor with liquid Jet-A is also investigated experimentally. The results indicate that while the overall flow features are similar to the gas-fueled SPRF combustor, the combustion characteristics and NOx performance in liquid operation are strongly controlled by fuel dispersion and evaporation. Injecting the liquid at the exit of the air annulus results in a highly lifted flame, similar to nonpremixed gaseous operation. On the other hand, retracting the fuel injector well inside the air annulus produces a well-dispersed fuel pattern at the reactant inlet leading to a reduction of the equivalence ratio in the fuel consuming reaction zones. Since the effective Dahmkohler number increases with global equivalence ratio, the difference in NOx emissions is more pronounced at higher fuel-air ratios as the retracted injector lowers the relative mixing time compared to the flush case.

Book excerpt: Combustion characteristics of a model can-type combustor are reported for air/fuel ratios encompassing take-off and ground-idle conditions and for two swirlers with gaseous fuel and at atmospheric pressure. Temperatures were obtained with fine-wire thermocouples, and concentrations of UHC, H2, CO, CO2, O2 sampled through a water-cooled probe with a flame ionization detector, a gas chromotograph and infrared and paramagnetic analyzers. The results indicate combustion efficiencies greater than 97%. For the air/fuel ratio corresponding to that of take-off, 45% of the mass flow of the primary jets turned upstream after impingement, combustion occurred in the wakes of the swirler and of the primary jets resulting in a pattern factor of 0.46. At ground-idle condition, 58% of the primary jet flow turned upstream reducing the pattern factor to 0.43. An 18% reduction in the swirl number at the ground-idle condition led to a pattern factor to 0.35 and, for takeoff, to a pattern factor of around 0.37 with combustion occurred mainly in the intermediate zone.

Book excerpt: To achieve single digit NOx emission from gas turbine combustors and prevent the combustion dynamics encountered in Lean Premixed Combustion, it is essential to understand the correlations among emission characteristics, combustion dynamics, and dynamics and characteristics of swirling flow field. The focus of this dissertation is to investigate the emission characteristics and combustion dynamics of multiple swirl dump combustors either in premixing or non-premixed combustion (e.g. Lean Direct Injection), and correlate these combustion characteristics (emissions, combustion instability and lean flammability) to the fluids dynamics (flow structures and its evolution). This study covers measurement of velocity flow field, temperature field, and combustion under effects of various parameters, including inlet flow Reynolds number, inlet air temperature, swirl configurations, downstream exhaust nozzle contraction ratios, length of mixing tube. These parameters are tested in both liquid and gaseous fuel combustions. Knowledge obtained through this comprehensive study is applied to passive and active controls for improving gas turbine combustion performance in the aid of novel sensor and actuator technologies. Emissions and combustion characteristics are shown closely related to the shape and size of central recirculation zone (CRZ), the mean and turbulence velocity and strain rate, and dynamics of large vortical structures. The passive controls, mostly geometry factors, affect the combustion characteristics and emissions through their influences on flow fields, and consequently temperature and radical fields. Air assist, which is used to adjust the momentum of fuel spray, is effective in reducing NOx and depress combustion oscillation without hurting LBO. Fuel distribution/split is also one important factor for achieving low NOx emission and control of combustion dynamics. The dynamics of combustion, including flame oscillations close to LBO and acoustic combustion instability, can be characterized by OH*/CH* radical oscillations and phase-locked chemiluminescence imaging. The periodic fluctuation of jet velocity and formation of large vortical structures within CRZ are responsible for combustion instability in multiple swirl combustors.
