Book excerpt: The profitable recovery of gold, uranium, and other minerals from South African gold ores in the 1970s resulted in a trend towards flotation as a complementary process to cyanidation. This trend has been encouraged by the ever-decreasing ore grades that are being mined and treated. The decision to build a flotation plant often hinges on a number of factors, including a desire to improve the recovery of gold from the residue, to produce pyrite and sulphuric acid, to recover gold from plant calcines, and to reduce capital and treatment costs. On South African gold mines it is normal practice to float the gold and gold-bearing minerals since they constitute the smallest component of the ore. It is important to establish what the gold-bearing minerals are, as well as their proportion. The same information, ie, type and proportion, is required for the gangue minerals. It is of note in South Africa that certain gold-bearing minerals are themselves of economic importance. Pyrite, for example, is used in the production of sulphuric acid, uraninite for uranium, and arsenopyrite for arsenic production. It is important to distinguish between the reasons for using flotation in the treatment of the so-called 'free milling' Witwatersrand ores and the refractory gold ores from areas such as Barberton, Sabie, and Gravelotte. In the latter case, it is essential to float the gold-bearing sulphide minerals (pyrite, arsenopyrite and, in certain cases, stibnite) from the gangue since the sulphides have to be roasted prior to cyanidation for economic gold extraction to be obtained. Fine milling of the concentrate does not give satisfactory results; however, recent developments have indicated that pressure or bacterial oxidative leaching can be considered as alternatives to roasting. On the other hand, the flotation of sulphides and other gold-bearing minerals from the 'free milling ores' with subsequent treatment will either improve the gold recoveries, or allow for higher tonnage throughputs at the same gold recovery for virtually the same milling circuit, and only further grinding of the concentrate is required. The majority of the gold and gold-bearing minerals in Witwatersrand ores are liberated after milling to between 60 and 80 per cent smaller than 75 um. The liberated gold can generally be floated with most thiol-type collectors, as well as with certain cationic collectors. The predominant sulphide minerals present in Witwatersrand ores are pyrite, followed by pyrrhotite and, in small quantities, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and cobaltite. At present all the flotation plants treating gold ores practise a policy of 'bulk' flotation, where an attempt is made to maximize the gold recovery by floating all the gold-bearing minerals. The flotation conditions adopted are usually those that favour high pyrite recovery. Fortunately, gold has been found to be as floatable as pyrite under the conditions applied in most gold mines. However, this is not the case for other gold-bearing minerals that can be floated (eg, uraninite). The process routes used on South African mines are of three types: that in which flotation takes place within the milling circuit or on the final classifier overflow product; that in which the current cyanidation residues are floated; that involving the flotation of old cyanidation residues. This paper, after discussing the above aspects, goes on to consider the chemical and physical parameters of importance in flotation, and details the flotation practices of five plants in South Africa. The design and control of flotation plants are then discussed.
