Book TESTING THE FLORISTIC QUALITY ASSESSMENT INDEX IN NATURAL AND CREATED WETLANDS IN MISSISSIPPI USA

Download or read book TESTING THE FLORISTIC QUALITY ASSESSMENT INDEX IN NATURAL AND CREATED WETLANDS IN MISSISSIPPI USA written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that states must include the use of biological assessments in their water quality laws to assess the biological integrity of aquatic systems. The Floristic Quality Assessment Index (FQAI), which uses wetland vegetation to assess the biological integrity of an ecosystem, has not been tested in Mississippi. The purpose of this study was to test the efficiency of the FQAI in wetlands along a gradient of human influence. Coefficients of conservatism (CC) were assigned to plant species based on their tolerance to disturbance and fidelity to habitat. A negative correlation was found between the FQAI and level of human disturbance for 53 sites surveyed in the summer of 2004. Based on the results of this study, the FQAI and the average CC could be effective tools for monitoring wetland management and restoration and for identifying areas of high conservation value in Mississippi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconnect. Restore. Reciprocate. Repairing landscapes and reconnecting us to the wild plant communities around us. Integrating restoration practices, foraging, herbalism, rewilding, and permaculture, Wild Plant Culture is a comprehensive guide to the ecological restoration of native edible and medicinal plant communities in Eastern North America. Blending science, practice, and traditional knowledge, it makes bold connections that are actionable, innovative, and ecologically imperative for repairing both degraded landscapes and our broken cultural relationship with nature. Coverage includes: Understanding and engaging in mutually beneficial human-plant connections Techniques for observing the land's existing and potential plant communities Baseline monitoring, site preparation, seeding, planting, and maintaining restored areas Botanical fieldwork restoration stories and examples Detailed profiles of 209 native plants and their uses. Both a practical guide and an evocative read that will transport you deep into the natural landscape, Wild Plant Culture is an essential toolkit for gardeners, farmers, and ecological restoration practitioners, highlighting the important role humans play in tending and mending native plant communities.

Book Plants of the Chicago Region

Book excerpt: An annotated checklist of the Vascular Flora of the Chicago Region with keys, this book contains notes on local distribution, ecology and taxonomy; a system for the qualitative evaluation of plant communities; a natural divisions' map; and a description of natural plant communities. This comprehensive and detailed treatment employs the revolutionary Coefficient of Conservatism (C values) and Floristic Quality Assessment methodology. Book Performance of Floristic Quality Assessment in Massachusetts Forested Wetlands

Download or read book Performance of Floristic Quality Assessment in Massachusetts Forested Wetlands written by Carolyn Gorss and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to combat the loss of valuable wetland functions and services, federal, state and tribal governments must have the tools to accurately assess and monitor the condition of wetland ecosystems. One particular method of wetland assessment is Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA), which has been growing in popularity throughout the United States since its creation in the 1970s. FQA relies on vegetative indicators of human disturbance to assess the integrity of an ecosystem. FQA calculations are based on Coefficients of Conservatism (C-scores), professionally-assigned scores ranging from 0-10 that denote a local species' tolerance to anthropogenic disturbance. Despite increasing interest in the use of FQA, few studies have thoroughly tested the performance of FQA, especially in New England. We used the Conservation Assessment and Prioritization System (CAPS), a landscape-based, coarse-scale assessment method, as a basis for evaluating FQA's performance in Massachusetts's forested wetlands. Our objective was to use CAPS Index of Ecological Integrity (IEI) scores (a form of generalized stressor gradient) to evaluate the performance of a variety of FQA indices (biological condition gradients), using C-scores from 7 states in the Northeast, and 2 ecoregions in Massachusetts. Based on our calculations of r-squared, and Spearman's rank analysis, we determined that FQA and C-scores have a moderate to weak relationship with the CAPS index of ecological integrity. Of the 12 indices and metrics we tested, the index with the strongest relationship to the IEI stressor gradient was mean Coefficient of Conservatism. Based on this research a number of suggestions are proposed for improving FQA as it applies to wetland assessment.
