Book Florida s Megatrends

Download or read book Florida s Megatrends written by David Colburn and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2010-10-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of Florida Megatrends, David Colburn and Lance deHaven-Smith revealed the state for what it is: a bellwether for the nation. The intervening years have only confirmed their analyses, as Florida and the U.S. have been battered and transformed by the housing collapse, the great economic recession that began in 2008, record-high gas prices, withering tourism, the 2004 hurricane season, and much more. This completely revised and updated edition brings the story up-to-date.

Book Florida Dreams

Download or read book Florida Dreams written by Patrick Grady and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything Florida Dreamers (or the Merely Curious) Need to Know about the Sunshine Mega-State If you're thinking about moving to Florida, or maybe you're just looking for a warm, sunny spot to get away from the ice and snow, or even if you're only curious about what's going on down here in America's only subtropical mega-state, you should read this book. It will give you an entertaining and informative explanation, from an economist's perspective, of why Florida has become the nation's 3rd most populous state, and of the challenges that lie ahead. As a bonus, the Kindle version of Florida Dreams has been written and designed specifically for the Kindle, and is chock full of intriguing hyperlinks, shedding even more light on all things Florida. The amazing rise of the Florida economy, and its emergence as a mega-state with the country's 4th largest economy, is the main theme of Florida Dreams. The secret to Florida's success, besides the climate, is the limited-government, low-tax, business-friendly environment and policies that have been in effect for years under both Republican and Democratic governments. This is in sharp contrast to what has been going on in the other two high-tax, big-government mega-states, California, and New York, as is amply revealed by many interstate comparisons. The in-migration of retirees from the north and the immigration of Hispanics from Latin America, especially Cuba, are the main source of Florida's population growth. Retirees, Hispanics, African-Americans and Indians are all making unique contributions to the Florida economy. Florida Dreams chronicles what they're doing and how they're faring. The state's two best known cities, Miami, and Orlando are being shaped differently by new Floridians, as well as tourists and snowbirds. Each has its own story and distinct flavor. Miami has become the unofficial capital of Latin America since the arrival of Cubans fleeing Castro. Orlando has been transformed by Disney into a giant theme park drawing tourists from all over the world. Even "The Villages," Florida's playground for seniors, has its own winning story. The resumption of space exploration back to the moon and on to Mars from Cape Canaveral is a very exciting development for Florida. It promises to reinvigorate NASA, spark an expansion of aerospace industries on the Space Coast, and bring more tourists to the Kennedy Space Center. The real estate meltdown from 2006-2012, which traumatized Floridians, is over and a solid recovery is in progress. Some mega-development projects, like the American Dream Mall in Miami and the Tampa Waterfront, are getting underway and will contribute greatly to a resurgence of construction. Tourism, aviation, aeronautics and defense, financial services, real estate, construction, transportation, energy, food processing, and agriculture are the backbone of the Florida economy. Companies like Disney, Lockheed Martin, Publix, NextEra Energy, and Carnival Cruise Lines are all innovative industry leaders. But agriculture is in decline. Oranges and citrus have been hard hit by hurricanes and citrus greening. Big Sugar is dependent on government support for its survival and is situated in an environmentally fragile zone, near what remains of the Everglades. Environmental challenges, like the red tide, global warming, sea level rise, and hurricanes, threaten the rise of Florida. Our precious ecological treasure, the Everglades, is in the crosshairs. The national political conundrum every election is whether Florida will be a red or a blue state. The 2018 mid-term election results provide fresh insight into this always controversial question. If these snippets pique your Florida Dreams, you are just a click away from the full scoop.

This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Likely to raise hackles among Democrats and Republicans alike, this dynamic history of modern Florida argues that the Sunshine State has become the political and demographic future of the nation. David Colburn reveals how Florida gradually abandoned the traditions of race and personality that linked it to the Democratic Party. The book focuses particularly on the population growth and chaotic gubernatorial politics that altered the state from 1940, when it was a sleepy impoverished southern outpost, to the present and the emergence of a dominant Republican Party.

Book excerpt: Arguing that an inter-generational war is brewing in the United States, this book paints a picture of the "ageing of America" and what it means for politics and policy questions, including social security, health care, crime, jobs, social welfare, defence and foreign affairs. Differences between older and younger citizens are examined in the light of voting and registration patterns, ideological and party preferences, and varieties of political activism. Contemporary media and new technologies are highlighted as sources of disparities and bridges between the generations - how they "watch politics", how they prefer to solve social problems, and how inter-generational understanding may be improved through communication and education.

Book America s Most Sustainable Cities and Regions

Download or read book America s Most Sustainable Cities and Regions written by John W. Day and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-23 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes you on a unique journey through American history, taking time to consider the forces that shaped the development of various cities and regions, and arrives at an unexpected conclusion regarding sustainability. From the American Dream to globalization to the digital and information revolutions, we assume that humans have taken control of our collective destinies in spite of potholes in the road such as the Great Recession of 2007-2009. However, these attitudes were formed during a unique 100-year period of human history in which a large but finite supply of fossil fuels was tapped to feed our economic and innovation engine. Today, at the peak of the Oil Age, the horizon looks different. Cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas are situated where water and other vital ecological services are scarce, and the enormous flows of resources and energy that were needed to create the megalopolises of the 20th century will prove unsustainable. Climate change is a reality, and regional impacts will become increasingly severe. Economies such as Las Vegas, which are dependent on discretionary income and buffeted by climate change, are already suffering the fate of the proverbial canary in the coal mine. Finite resources will mean profound changes for society in general and the energy-intensive lifestyles of the US and Canada in particular. But not all regions are equally vulnerable to these 21st-century megatrends. Are you ready to look beyond “America’s Most Livable Cities” to the critical factors that will determine the sustainability of your municipality and region? Find out where your city or region ranks according to the forces that will impact our lives in the next years and decades. Find out how: ·resource availability and ecological services shaped the modern landscape ·emerging megatrends will make cities and regions more or less livable in the new century ·your city or region ranks on a “sustainability” map of the United States ·urban metabolism puts large cities at particular risk ·sustainability factors will favor economic solutions at a local, rather than global, level ·these principles apply to industrial economies and countries globally. Book Forecasting in the Social and Natural Sciences

Download or read book Forecasting in the Social and Natural Sciences written by Kenneth C. Land and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and natural scientists often are called upon to produce, or participate, in the pro duction of forecasts. This volume assembles essays that (a) describe the organizational and political context of applied forecasting, (b) review the state-of-the-art for many fore casting models and methods, and (c) discuss issues of predictability, the implications of forecaSt errors, and model construction, linkage and verification. The essays should be of particular interest to social and natural scientists concerned with forecasting large-scale systems. This project had its origins in discussions of social forecasts and forecasting method ologies initiated a few years ago by several social and natural science members of the Social Science Research Council's Committee on Social Indicators. It became appar ent in these discussions that certain similar problems were confronted in forecasting large-scale systems-be they social or natural. In response, the Committee hypothesized that much could be learned through more extended and systematic interchanges among social and natural scientists focusing on the formal methodologies applied in forecasting. To put this conjecture to the test, the Committee sponsored a conference at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, on June 10-13, 1984, on forecasting in the social and natural sciences. The conference was co-chaired by Committee members Kenneth C. Land and Stephen H. Schneider representing, respectively, the social and natural science mem bership of the Committee. Support for the conference was provided by a grant to the Council from the Division of Social and Economic Science of the National Science Foundation.

Book Reubin O D Askew and the Golden Age of Florida Politics

This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the reinvention of Florida politics Florida Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Florida Nonfiction Reubin Askew was swept into the governor’s office in 1970 as part of a remarkable wave of progressive politics and legislative reform in Florida. A man of uncompromising principle and independence, he was elected primarily on a platform of tax reform. In the years that followed, Askew led a group of politicians from both parties who sought—and achieved—judicial reform, redistricting, busing and desegregation, the end of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the Sunshine Amendment, and much more. This period was truly a golden age of Florida politics, and Martin Dyckman’s narrative is well written, fast paced, and reads like a novel. Dyckman also reveals how the return of special interests, the rise of partisan politics, unlimited campaign spending, term limits, gerrymandering, and more have eroded the achievements of the Golden Age in subsequent decades.
